Ever since hearing a review of this film in mid-May, I have been reflecting on something that Roger Stone said in an interview during the movie. It’s interesting that Jesus was very aware of the struggle and tension between holding up love as a commandment to live by while living in a world that turns to hate so quickly. Hate may be a powerful motivator, and it may provoke a strong reaction from people. Love begs us to act differently than this rule. Love calls us to respond to those who react out of hate. We are called to live in a radically different way. We are commanded to love! Continued on page 8

A Summer Read and Reflection on LoveGet Me Roger Stone is the title of a new Netflix documentary covering the life and career of Roger Stone, who I’d describe in my “fit for the pulpit” vocabulary as a trouble maker and political consultant for conservative candidates since Richard Nixon. Roger Stone describes himself as “an agent provocateur.” Roughly defined, an agent provocateur is someone who persuades others to do wrong.

I won’t give you my review of the film, though I encourage you to see it if the subjects of politics, history and human behavior are of interest to you. But beware, it is not for younger audiences!

Ever since hearing a review of this film in mid-May, I have been reflecting on something that Roger Stone said in an interview during the movie. Among his self-described list of “Stone’s Rules”, is this: “Hate is a more powerful motivator than love.”

And again, without going into a long analysis of what this means, it begs the question, “Is this true?” Is hate a more powerful motivator than love?

After watching the film, one can see why Stone would hold this as a rule. But after reading the gospel passage for the 6th Sunday of Easter, Year A (John 14:15-21), I am reminded that Jesus Christ commands us to live lives that are counter to this rule of Roger Stone.

In chapters 13-15 of the Gospel according to John, the word “love” or a variation of it, occurs 27 times (7 times in the 38 verses of chapter 13; 10 times in the 31 verses of chapter 14; and 10 times in the 27 verses of chapter 15). These chapters consist of Jesus sharing the Last Supper with the disciples, washing their feet, foretelling his betrayal by Judas and his denial by Peter, giving the disciples the “new commandment” to love one another, telling them that he is “the way, the truth and the life,” promising that the Holy Spirit will come to them after he is gone, saying “I am the true vine,” reiterating the commandment to love, and they conclude with warnings regarding the world’s hatred of the disciples.

JUNE-JULY 2017 MUSIC | PASTORAL CARE 3Music Recognition Sunday on May 7: On Sunday May 7, all parishioners who participate in the Church of the Advent music program were recognized for their services with a booklet listing the names of each participant. Brennan is very grateful to all such folks who in many cases make a weekly and even twice weekly commitment to the church by sharing their vocal and instrumental gifts. Junior choir members were listed on the back of the leaflet for having achieved certain levels of excellence in this church’s RSCM (Royal School of Church Music) program. Their achievements are as follows: Brice Krydynski - Senior Chorister and Light Blue Ribbon. Best “Mirror”; Sarah Halstead - Senior Chorister. Most Punctual. Light Blue Ribbon; Virginia Delaney - Senior Chorister. Light Blue Ribbon. Best “Mirror”; Audrey Soto - Senior Chorister. Light Blue Ribbon. Most Creative; Caroline Gaskins - White Ribbon. Most Improved; Lilly Moody - White Ribbon. Best New Vocalist; Ellie Fisher - White Ribbon. Most Creative Answers; Mary Elizabeth Reid - White Ribbon. Best New Chorister; Caroline Byers - Best Effort. Dark Blue Ribbon; Anne Caroline Greer - Best Behaved. Head Chorister; Julia Graham - Light Blue Ribbon. Best Overall Chorister; Tally Vaneman - Best Vocal Leadership.

Summer Choir Has Started; Come Sing with Us! Now that summer is in full swing, come sing in the one and only Church of the Advent ensemble which meets during the summer, the Summer Choir! Along with the Occasional Choir, it’s the easiest most low stress way to be a part of the music program. Please come up to the choir room in Pendleton Hall one hour before the service starts to learn whatever the anthem before the 10:30am service happens to be. The music will often be unison or two part and sometimes be based on familiar hymn tunes. Anyone ages 10 to 110 can participate. As always, no regular commitment is required, just a desire to make a joyful noise!

Choir Trip to Washington, DC; July 21-24: Please keep several of our adult choir members in your prayers as they travel to sing at the annual summer choral festival at All Souls’ Episcopal Church in our nation’s capital. While there, they will be singing in full the “Jubilation Mass” by DC area composer Ken Watson, written for the choir based from our church that completed a week long residency at Lincoln Cathedral in Lincolnshire, England last summer. We as a church wish them well as they “go out into the world and preach the gospel”.

Thanks for Helping to Form Us The Rev. Deborah Apoldo, Associate Rector for Christian Formation

Recently we had a conversation among staff members about what to call the classes and offerings on Sunday mornings. Over the years churches have struggled to come up just the right name for their classes and programs. You’ve probably seen some unusual results of this struggle in church printed materials and in signage. Here are some names of classes that illustrate the point:

• Couples ‘R’ Us •F.I.S.H. (this stands for: Friends in Service to Him) • Uni-versity (this means “United in Diversity”) • Pairs and Spares (I am not sure what “spares” is referring to here). • Legacy Builders (I assume these are seniors?) • AsOne (no explanation for what this class is about) • DIGG (Delighting in God’s Grace)

In the end, we decided to call our Sunday classes “Sunday School” for all ages. While this doesn’t shout creativity or cleverness, most people know what Sunday School is.

As I think of the names of the many opportunities we have at the advent to learn about and to grow in our faith together, I am inspired. The Gleaners Class meets to glean from Scripture, art, music and discussion principles and traditions that feed the soul and encourage faith. Adventure Kingdom conveys to our children and their parents that life with Jesus is an adventure. The Benedictine Study Group seeks to live into the wonderful Rule of Saint Benedict that has inspired and strengthened Christian communities throughout the ages. Men’s and Women’s Bible studies offer the opportunity to learn the great salvation story in community. The XCentric ministries convey to youth the realities of God’s eccentric love and grace – and on and on.

Thank you to all who have made this 2016-17 season of Christian formation classes, programs, and activities so meaningful and formative. If you know or see any of these folks please tell them how much you appreciate their efforts. If you have gifts of leadership in teaching and/or mentoring, please let me know how you would like to serve.

From the Rector - continued from page 1

Jesus tells his disciples, “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” (John 15:12-13).

The way of the cross is the way of love responding to hate. Hate sentenced Jesus to death on the cross! Love drove Jesus to allow it to be so! Hate nailed him to the tree! Love raised him from the grave!

We are called to live fearlessly because perfect love casts out fear. We are called to show the world that there is another way of living and of being in relationship with each other.

We are not to be ignorant of the way of the world, the way of hate. Roger Stone may represent much of how the world truly operates, but we are called to follow the way of Jesus Christ, NOT the way of the world.

Jesus said to his disciples, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments” (John 14:15). He also said, “They who have my commandments and keep them are those who love me; and those who love me will be loved by my Father, and I will love them and reveal myself to them.” (John 14:21).

This is the GOOD NEWS! This is our life and our way of life. This is why we are called to pray and to worship. This is why we are called to serve and to sacrifice. This is why we believe. This is why LOVE WINS.

Let this be what you take with you (along with your “Flat Jesus”) as you go through the summer months and all the days of your life. Please join me in making this prayer a daily practice of faith as we go our various ways and pray also that we return safely. God bless you. Ned+

Let us pray. O God, you have prepared for those who love you such good things as surpass our understanding: Pour into our hearts such love towards you, that we, loving you in all things and above all things, may obtain your promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. The Book of Common Prayer, page 225 Ned +

Thank YouAs I complete my time with you all, I want to thank you for welcoming me and sharing your beautiful church and wonderful parish life with me. Being placed at the Episcopal Church of the Advent for my internship as part of the Discernment Process towards priesthood has been an amazing experience. Because Wofford College and Church of the Advent are so close, I have been involved in the life of the church beyond Sundays and evenings, which has given me the chance to experience and be a part of so much more. Thank you for helping to make Advent feel like home for the past six months. I will cherish my time with you all. You all will continue to be in my prayers.Love, Lathrop Mosley

The Advent Foundation – Investing TalentsWant to make a good investment? You can do so by making a legacy gift to the Advent Foundation. Follow the fellows with the five talents and the two talents in Jesus’ parable. They went out and increased the property with which they had been entrusted, so that when the master returned they were blessed and rewarded. Your gift, by will or trust, to the Church of the Advent, is just such an investment. It goes on through the years; it is never used up; it continues to produce year in and year out for our outreach, buildings, and pastoral care. In a couple of generations your gift will have produced not just double, but many times its initial value. And think how many in our community and our children will be served! Think about it. It makes a difference. The Advent Foundation – call Kit Jennings at 864-504-3689 or email to: [email protected]

Reminder The Parish Paper Submission

Deadline for the August issue will be Friday, July 14.

2017 Youth Summer Mission WeekThis summer 10 members of our youth are going to Charleston to spend a week working in a variety of mission and outreach projects along with youth from other churches and locations. As our youth mission team enter into the lives of others and build relationships with the people of Charleston, they’ll experience God working through them at projects such as these: •Oversee sports camps for kids through the City of North Charleston Recreation Department. •Spend time with people receiving care at local nursing homes. •Perform minor home repairs for residents. •Work on the grounds of a ranch that serves as a refuge to orphaned, neglected, and abused boys. •Lead games and activities and help serve lunch at a kids’ camp. The theme of this year’s mission week is “The Road.” It is a reference to the road to Emmaus story in the gospels. Two followers of Jesus walked on a road from Jerusalem to a small town called Emmaus. They were struggling with their disappointment after Jesus died. When a stranger joined them along the way, they thought it was just another weary and discouraged traveler. Soon, to their amazement, they discovered that the fellow traveler was Jesus. On our mission week in Charleston our youth will encounter a fresh perspective of the “The Road to Emmaus” story each day. We share much of what those Jesus followers thought and experienced on that stretch of road and we’ll discover how our connection with Jesus follows much of the same path as theirs. As we go to print, the participants include: Jackson Guitierrez, Joseph Guitierez, Jonah Dixon, Nevaeh Dixon, Ligon Chewning, Graham Scheel, Chris Jungkind and Shakya Cohen. Please, keep our youth and leaders in your prayers this summer July 30-August 5.

All youth group events and activities are open to all youth 6th-12th grade throughout the community. Friends are not only welcome but encouraged to participate. Contact David Dixon at [email protected].

OUTREACH & MISSIONS 11JUNE-JULY 2017Cumberland Mission Team, June 19-23 (ages 21+). Prayerfully consider joining the Cumberland Mission Team as we celebrate 20 years of service through Housing Sewanee. Ground was broken on a new development of sustainable housing, Sherwood Springs, in March 2017. The first house will look similar to the photo except the porch will be on the side of the house facing the cul de sac. Seven 700-square-feet homes are to be built in Phase 1. This construction is in collaboration with the Otey Memorial Parish Church (adjacent to the University of the South campus) and coordinated by Mickey Suarez, parish volunteer. Deposits are now being accepted. For more information, contact Larry Moore, [email protected] H. Wright NewsMinistry Recognition: Spartanburg School District 7 recognized the Church of the Advent for their ministry to Mary H. Wright Elementary School. Volunteer co-chairs, Joy Oates and Julie Schwartz, accepted the award on behalf of the church.

Mary H. Wright students sold 76 pieces of artwork during their artist reception in the Parish and Community Life Center Lobby! We hosted the 5th graders for lunch, and they enjoyed having their photos taken with their classmates! Our printing deadline didn’t allow us to include photos from the Field Days, but we hope to share some in a future issue.

School Supplies and Blessing of School Supplies: The Advent Shoppe will be selling school supplies for Mary H. Wright Elementary School students and backpacks for the Children’s Advocacy Center during the summer. These school supplies will be blessed at the 10:30am service on August 13. Your generosity will provide much needed help for these families. Look for upcoming announcements in the Bell Ringer.
