Welcome to St. Paul’s ChapelPlease add your voice and heart to the worship. Everyone is welcome at Jesus’ Table, and everyone’s voice is needed to tell the Good News of God’s love in Christ. Please help others find a place near you, and greet the person next to you as we prepare to worship together.

Today in the LiturgyToday at Trinity Church and St. Paul’s Chapel, our worship services are augmented with specific Collects and Prayers of the People compiled by the Union of Black Episcopalians.

On June 17, 2015, nine members of Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina, were murdered by a white racist during their weekly bible study. Just a few days later at the General Convention of The Episcopal Church in Salt Lake City, we committed ourselves to stand in solidarity with the AME Church as they respond with acts of forgiveness, reconciliation, and justice.

Now our sisters and brothers in the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church have asked us to make that solidarity visible by participating in “Confession, Repentance, and Commitment to End Racism Sunday” on Sunday, September 6. The Presiding Bishop of The Episcopal Church, The Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts-Schori, issued a call for congregations to join in this ecumenical effort with prayer and action.

“Racism will not end with the passage of legislation alone; it will also require a change of heart and thinking. This is an effort which the faith community must lead, and be the conscience of the nation. We will call upon every church, temple, mosque and faith communion to make their worship service on this Sunday a time to confess and repent for the sin and evil of racism, this includes ignoring, tolerating and accepting racism, and to make a commitment to end racism by the example of our lives and actions.”

—AME Bishop Reginald T. Jackson.

The First Reading Isaiah 35:4-7a

Reader A Reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah.

Say to those who are of a fearful heart, “Be strong, do not fear! Here is your God. He will come with vengeance, with terrible recompense. He will come and save you.” Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; then the lame shall leap like a deer, and the tongue of the speechless sing for joy. For waters shall break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert; the burning sand shall become a pool, and the thirsty ground springs of water.

Reader The Word of the Lord.

People Thanks be to God.

Psalm 146

All Hallelujah! Praise the Lord, O my soul! * I will praise the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praises to God while I have my being

Put not your trust in rulers, nor in any child on earth,* for there is no help in them.

When they breathe their last, they return to earth, * and in that day their thoguhts perish.

Happy are they who have the God of Jacob for their help! * whose hope is in the Lord their God;

Who made heaven and earth, the seas, and all that is in them; * who keeps his promise for ever;

Who gives justice to those who are oppressed, * and food to those who hunger.

The Lord sets the prisoners free; the Lord opens the eyes of the blind; * the Lord lifts up those who are bowed down; The Lord loves the righteous; the Lord cares for the stranger; * he sustains the orphan and widow, but frustrates the way of the wicked. The Lord shall reign for ever, * your God, O Zion, throughout all generations. Hallelujah!

The Holy Gospel Mark 7:24-37

Please stand as you are able.

Celebrant The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus set out and went away to the region of Tyre. He entered a house and did not want anyone to know he was there. Yet he could not escape notice, but a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit immediately heard about him, and she came and bowed down at his feet. Now the woman was a Gentile, of Syrophoenician origin. She begged him to cast the demon out of her daughter. He said to her, “Let the children be fed first, for it is not fair to take the children’s food and throw it to the dogs.” But she answered

Page 5: Holy Eucharist Rite II St. Paul’s Chapel - Trinity Church · Holy Eucharist Rite II. ... and streams in the desert; the burning sand shall become a pool, ... For our sake he was

5

him, “Sir, even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.” Then he said to her, “For saying that, you may go-- the demon has left your daughter.” So she went home, found the child lying on the bed, and the demon gone.

Then he returned from the region of Tyre, and went by way of Sidon towards the Sea of Galilee, in the region of the Decapolis. They brought to him a deaf man who had an impediment in his speech; and they begged him to lay his hand on him. He took him aside in private, away from the crowd, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spat and touched his tongue. Then looking up to heaven, he sighed and said to him, “Ephphatha,” that is, “Be opened.” And immediately his ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly. Then Jesus ordered them to tell no one; but the more he ordered them, the more zealously they proclaimed it. They were astounded beyond measure, saying, “He has done everything well; he even makes the deaf to hear and the mute to speak.”

Celebrant The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The Sermon The Vicar

A brief silence follows the sermon.

Nicene CreedPlease stand as you are able.

All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven

Page 6: Holy Eucharist Rite II St. Paul’s Chapel - Trinity Church · Holy Eucharist Rite II. ... and streams in the desert; the burning sand shall become a pool, ... For our sake he was

6

and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Prayers of the People Provided by the Union of Black Episcopalians Intercessor Gracious God, you fill us with faith and courage to confront the world’s injustice and to carry your abundant love to all the world: Hear us as we pray, saying: We give thanks to God in prayer; fill us with your Spirit.

Celebrant O God, the Father of all, whose Son commanded us to love our enemies: Lead them and us from prejudice to truth: deliver them and us from hatred, cruelty, and revenge; and in your good time enable us all to stand reconciled before you, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Confession of Sin and AbsolutionCelebrant Nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus, therefore let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

All Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving BCP 361, Eucharistic Prayer A

Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give him thanks and praise.

Celebrant It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

Through Jesus Christ our Lord; who on the first day of the week overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

Sanctus All Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,

heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Celebrant Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself, and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.

He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

All Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

Celebrant We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.

Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may

9

faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ: By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever.

All Amen.

Celebrant And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,

for ever and ever. Amen.

FractionThe Celebrant breaks the bread.

Celebrant This is the true bread which comes from down from heaven and gives life to the world.

People Whoever eats this bread will live for ever.

Celebrant The Gifts of God for the People of God.

All who hunger for God are cordially invited to this table, including children. You may stand or kneel to receive communion. You may consume the bread and then drink from the chalice (please grasp the bottom of the chalice to guide it to your lips). In the United States each year, approximately 2,570 children as young as 13 are sentenced to juvenile life without parole. Nationwide, more than 2.7 million children have an incarcerated parent—1 in 9 African-American children, 1 in 28 Hispanic children, and 1 in 57 white children—a situation human rights advocates have called “the greatest threat to childhood well-being in the U.S.” This event brings together nationally recognized experts and local activists to clarify the issues, spark discussion, and offer practical advice on how to make a difference. Bryan Stevenson, author of Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption, delivers the keynote address. Panel speakers will include Divine Pryor, Judith Kaye, the Rev. Vivian Nixon, and Diana Ortiz.
