Processional Hymn Hymnal 674 [Please stand as you are able] 1. “Forgive our sins as we forgive” you taught us, Lord to pray; but you alone can grant us grace to live the words we say. 2. How can your pardon reach and bless the unforgiving heart that broods on wrongs and will not let old bitterness depart? 3. In blazing light your cross reveals the truth we dimly knew, how small the debts men owe to us, how great our debt to you. 4. Lord, cleanse the depths within our souls, and bid resentment cease; then, reconciled to God and man, our lives will spread your peace. God the Father Almighty. O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father,

that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us.

Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer.

Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father,

have mercy upon us. For thou only art holy; thou only art the Lord;

[Please kneel as you are able]O God, the strength of all those who put their trust in thee: Mercifully accept our prayers; and because, through the weakness of our mortal nature, we can do no good thing without thee, grant us the help of thy grace, that in keeping thy commandments we may please thee both in will and deed; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Lesson Deuteronomy 30:15-20 [You may be seated]

A Reading from the Book of Deuteronomy.

Moses said to all Israel the words which the Lord com-manded him, “See, I have set before you today life and prosperity, death and adversity. If you obey the com-mandments of the LORD your God that I am command-ing you today, by loving the LORD your God, walking in his ways, and observing his commandments, de-crees, and ordinances, then you shall live and become numerous, and the LORD your God will bless you in the land that you are entering to possess. But if your heart turns away and you do not hear, but are led astray to bow down to other gods and serve them, I declare to you today that you shall perish; you shall not live long in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess. I call heaven and earth to witness against you today that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Choose life so that you and your descen-dants may live, loving the LORD your God, obeying him, and holding fast to him; for that means life to you and length of days, so that you may live in the land that the LORD swore to give to your ancestors, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

The Word of the Lord.Thanks be to God.

Psalm 119

Happy are they whose way is / blameless, who walk in the law of the / LORD!Happy are they who observe his de/crees and seek him with all their / hearts!Who never do any / wrong, but always walk in his / ways.You laid down your com/mandments, that we should fully / keep them.Oh, that my ways were made so di/rect that I might keep your / statutes!Then I should not be put to / shame, when I regard all your com/mandments.I will thank you with an unfeigned / heart, when I have learned your righteous / judgments.I will keep your / statutes; do not utterly for/sake me.

Lesson 1 Corinthians 3:1-9

A Reading from the First Epistle to the Corinthians.

Brothers and sisters, I could not speak to you as spiri-tual people, but rather as people of the flesh, as in-fants in Christ. I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not ready for solid food. Even now you are still not ready, for you are still of the flesh. For as long as there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not of the flesh, and behaving according to human inclinations? For when one says, “I belong to Paul,” and another, “I belong to Apollos,” are you not merely human? What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants through whom you came to believe, as the Lord assigned to each. I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. The one who plants and the one who waters have a common purpose, and each will receive wages according to the labor of each. For we are God’s servants, working together; you are God’s field, God’s building. The Word of the Lord.Thanks be to God.

Gospel Hymn Hymnal 304

[Please stand as you are able]

1. I come with joy to meet my Lord,forgiven, loved, and free,

in awe and wonder to recallhis life laid down for me.

2. I come with Christians far and nearto find, as all are fed,

the new community of lovein Christ’s communion bread.

3. As Christ breaks bread and bids us share,each proud division ends.

That love that made us makes us one,and strangers now are friends.

Gospel Matthew 5:21-37W W W The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew.Glory be to thee, O Lord.

Jesus said, “You have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, `You shall not murder’; and `whoever murders shall be liable to judgment.’ But I say to you that if you are angry with a brother or sister, you will be liable to judgment; and if you insult a brother or sister, you will be liable to the council; and if you say, `You fool,’ you will be liable to the hell of fire. So when you are offering your gift at the altar, if you remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother or sister, and then come and offer your gift. Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are on the way to court with him, or your accuser may hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you will be thrown into prison. Truly I tell you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny. “You have heard that it was said, `You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that everyone who

looks at a woman with lust has already committed adul-tery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to go into hell. “It was also said, `Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’ But I say to you that anyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of unchastity, causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adul-tery. “Again, you have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, `You shall not swear falsely, but carry out the vows you have made to the Lord.’ But I say to you, Do not swear at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. Let your word be `Yes, Yes’ or `No, No’; anything more than this comes from the evil one.

The Gospel of the Lord.Praise be to thee, O Christ.

Gospel Hymn Hymnal 304

4. And thus with joy we meet our Lord.His presence, always near,

is in such friendship better known:we see and praise him here.

5. Together met, together bound,we’ll go our different ways,

and as his people in the worldwe’ll live and speak his praise.

Creed BCP 326[Please stand as you are able]

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. W We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Confession BCP 331Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God.

[Silence is kept]

Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker of all things, judge of all men: We acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, which we from time to time most grievously have committed, by thought, word, and deed, against thy divine Majesty, provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings: the remembrance of them is grievous unto us, the burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; for thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please thee in newness of life, to the honor and glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Absolution BCP 332Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to all those who with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him, W have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Peace BCP 332The peace of the Lord be always with you.And with thy spirit.

[You may share a greeting of peace with those near you]

Great ThanksgivingEucharistic Prayer II

BCP 334The Lord be with you.And with thy Spirit.Lift up your hearts.

We lift them up unto the Lord.Let us give thanks unto our Lord God.

It is meet and right so to do.

It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto thee, O Lord, holy Father,

almighty, everlasting God.

Proper Preface of Epiphany BCP 346Because in the mystery of the Word made flesh,

thou hast caused a new light to shine in our hearts, to give the knowledge of thy glory

in the face of thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord.

Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven,

we laud and magnify thy glorious Name; evermore praising thee, and saying,

SanctusHymnal S114

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts: Heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Glory be to thee, O Lord Most High.

W Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

[Please kneel as you are able]

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, for that thou did-stcreate heaven and earth, and didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He

made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel com-mand us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again.

For in the night in which he was betrayed, he took bread; and when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my Body, which is given for you. Do this in remem-brance of me.”

Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my Blood of the New Cov-enant, which is shed for you, and for many, for the re-mission of sins. Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.”

Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resur-rection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the Body and Blood of thy dearly-be-loved Son Jesus Christ. And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to ac-cept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, our selves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this Holy Communion may worthily receive the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be W filled with thy grace and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord;

By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Ghost

all honor and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end.

Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer Hymnal S119And now, as our Savior Christ hath taught us,

we are bold to say,Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

FractionHymnal S154

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us;

therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Prayer of Humble Access BCP 337We do not presume to come to this thy Table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under thy Table. But thou art the same Lord whose property is always to have mercy. Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of thy dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen.

Invitation to CommunionThe Gifts of God for the People of God.

Agnus Dei Hymnal S158O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins

of the world, have mercy upon us.O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins

of the world, have mercy upon us.O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins

of the world, grant us thy peace.

Communion Music Hymnal 635

1. If thou but trust in God to guide thee,and hope in him through all thy ways,

he’ll give thee strength what-e’er betide thee,and bear thee through the evil days.

Who trusts in God’s unchanging lovebuilds on a rock that nought can move.

2. Sing, pray, and keep his ways unswerving;so do thine own part faithfully,

and trust his word, though undeserving;thou yet shalt find it true for thee;

God never yet forsook in needthe soul that trusted him indeed.

Post-communion Prayer BCP 339Let us pray.

[Please kneel as you are able]Almighty and everliving God, we most heartily thank thee for that thou dost feed us, in these holy mysteries, with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and dost assure us thereby of thy favor and goodness towards us; and that we are very members incorporate in the mystical body of thy Son, the blessed company of all faithful people; and are also heirs, through hope, of thy everlasting kingdom. And we humbly beseech thee, O heavenly Father, so to assist us with thy grace, that we may continue in that holy fellowship, and do all such good works as thou hast prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen.

Closing Hymn Hymnal 594

[Please stand as you are able]

1. God of grace and God of glory,on thy people pour thy power;

crown thine ancient Church’s story;bring her bud to glorious flower.

Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,for the facing of this hour,for the facing of this hour.

2. Lo! the hosts of evil round usscorn thy Christ, assail his ways!

From the fears that long have bound usfree our hearts to faith and praise:grant us wisdom, grant us courage

for the living of these days,for the living of these days.

3. Cure thy children’s warring madness,bend our pride to thy control;

shame our wanton, selfish gladness,rich in things and poor in soul.

Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,lest we miss thy kingdom’s goal,lest we miss thy kingdom’s goal.

4. Save us from weak resignationto the evils we deplore;

let the gift of thy salvationbe our glory evermore.

Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,serving thee whom we adore,serving thee whom we adore.

Today’s MusicToday’s organ prelude is the lovely Prelude in E-Flat by Wiliam H. Harris (1883 - 1973). He was an Eng-lish organist and composer, affectionately nicknamed “Doc H” by his choristers. He recieved a scholarship to the Royal College of Music in London. His most well-known position was at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor. The postlude is from one of Felix Mendels-sohn’s organ sonatas. The music is very straight-for-ward and appealing. Mendelssohn (1809 – 1847) was a German composer, pianist, organist and conductor of the early Romantic period. Mendelssohn’s compo-sitions include symphonies, concertos, piano music and chamber music. His best-known works include his overture and incidental music for A Midsum-mer Night’s Dream, the Italian Symphony, the Scot-tish Symphony, the oratorio Elijah, the overture The Hebrides, his mature Violin Concerto, and his String Octet. The melody for the Christmas carol “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” is also his. Mendelssohn’s Songs Without Words are his most famous solo piano com-positions.

The Cathedral Choir sings a standard English Tudor motet, “Lord, for thy tender mercies’ sake”. This wonderful music is attributed to both Richard Far-rant and John Hilton. No matter who composed it, this is delightful music.

Hymn Notes“Forgive our sins as we forgive” - Hymnal 674There are few hymns which deal with forgiveness. The author has written, “The idea of writing the ‘Forgiveness’ hymn came to me some years ago when I was digging up weeds in a long-neglected garden. Realizing how these deeply-rooted weeds were choking the life out of the flowers in the garden, I came to feel that deeply-rooted resentments in our lives could destroy every Christian virtue unless, by God’s grace, we learned to forgive.”

God of grace and God of glory - Hymnal 594This hymn text was written by Harry Emerson Fosdick for the opening of Riverside Church in New York City. Built with major financial support from the Rockefeller family, the church was opened on October 5, 1930. To mark this occasion Fosdick wrote this hymn at his summer home in Boothbay Harbor, Maine.
