The Solemnity of the

Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

June 3, 2018 Reading I: Exodus 24:3-8 Responsorial Psalm 116:12-13,15-16,17-18 Reading II: Hebrews 9:11-15 Gospel: Mark 14:12-16,22-26

Theme: “He took bread, said the blessing, broke it, gave it to

them, and said, ‘Take it; this is my body.’ Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, and they all drank from it” (Gospel).

German Philosopher Ludwig Andreas Feuerbach (1863) says, "Der Mensch ist, was er ißt." Or in English it means, “man is what he eats.” More than ever, we put metrics on food calories and be aware of what is healthy and unhealthy. What we eat indeed can turn out to be a life sustainer or a life taker.

Jesus says, “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him” (John 6:56ff). Spiritually and physically, we need to be sustained and nourished. The Holy Eucharist as we believe is the sacrament of the Body and Blood of Christ. It makes sense when already we believe that God authored our life and continue to generate and sustain every cell of our body and spirit. A living being always needs nourishment otherwise it dies.

Think of a newly conceived infant. For nine months, life is practically sustained by the body and blood of the mother. The womb is the best incubator of God’s love. And so, the Holy Eucharist remains the womb of God’s love for us to be sustained, nourished, and protected from all harm and evil. You know you are not getting life when you are away or disconnected from the womb of God. The imagery of the gospel is very direct. It says, "I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:5).

Are you receiving the Holy Eucharist regularly? Don’t be cut off, because outside of God, life is impossible.

Let us pray: We give you thanks, O most merciful Lord and Redeemer of our souls, for this day Thou hast made us worthy by means of these immortal and heavenly mysteries. Direct our way; keep us in fear of you; guard our lives; and make our steps firm through the prayers and intercessions of the glorious and holy Mother of God and ever-Virgin Mary. Be exalted above the heavens, O God, and above all the earth, Thy glory, now and forever and ever. Amen (Prayer of St. John Chrysostom).

Solemnity of Corpus Christi By Scott Hahn

All of today's readings are set in the context of the Passover. The First Reading recalls the Old Cov-enant celebrated at Sinai following the first Passover and the Exodus. In sprinkling the blood of the covenant on the Israelites, Moses was symbolizing God's desire in this covenant to make them His family, His "blood" relations. Quoting Moses' words in today's Gospel, Jesus elevates and transforms this covenant symbol to an extraordinary reality. In the New Covenant made in the Blood of Christ, we truly become one with His Body and Blood. The first covenant made with Moses and Israel at Sinai was but a shadow of this new and greater covenant made by Christ with all humankind in that upper room (Hebrews 10:1). The Passover that Jesus celebrates with His Twelve Apostles "actualizes," makes real, what could only be symbolized by Moses' sacrifice at the altar with twelve pillars. What Jesus does today is establish His Church as the new Israel, and His Eucharist as the new worship of the living God. In offering Himself to God through the Spirit, Jesus delivered Israel from the transgressions of the first covenant. And, as we hear in today's Epistle, by His blood He purified us and made us capable of true worship. God does not want dead works or animal sacrifices. He wants our own flesh and blood, our own lives, consecrated to Him, offered as a living sacrifice. This is the sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving that we sing of in today's Psalm. This is the Eucharist. What we do in memory of Him is to pledge our lives to Him, to renew our promise to live by the words of His covenant, and to be His servants. There is no other return we can offer to Him for the eternal inheritance He has won for us. So let us approach the altar, calling upon His name in thanksgiving, taking up the cup of salvation.

Parish Mission Statement: To unite our Parish family to grow in faith, love, and charity as we become active stewards in our church and community.

From its humble beginnings as a mission of St Margaret Mary Church in 1957 to its dedication as a stand-alone parish on June 29, 1961, Holy Name Parish has been serving the southeast side of San Antonio for over 60 years. From a small eight-room school in 1961, Holy Name School has overcome challenges over the years and now enrolls over 250 students, Pre-K through 8th grade. With the closing of St Margaret Mary Catholic school in 2017, Holy Name School became the only Catholic elementary and middle School serving southeast San Antonio. In service to the surrounding community, Holy Name Parish provides a CYO Program for the area youth, food and financial assistance outreach program for community residents as well as an Activity Center that serves other community needs. With “vision” from 11 pastors and a faithful community, Holy Name has been spreading God’s Word and spiritually guiding and educating children and families.

In addition, we recently dedicated Our Lady of Guadalupe Grotto as an additional area of prayer and looking forward, have plans to construct a multi-purpose building. We hope to continue and realize some of these visions through the On the Way-Andale! Capital Campaign.

Holy Name Parish goal is $513,000.00 and Holy Name’s share will be $205,200.00. With the help of lay leadership at Holy Name Parish and the archdiocese, we identified our most pressing needs as a parish. We have chosen to build a new multi-purpose building to house the Outreach Ministry, Ministry Meeting Rooms, and the CYO with our share of the funds raised through our upcoming On the Way Andale! Capital Campaign.

Cultivating God’s Gifts Responsibly

In the Prayers and Reflection for this week we are asked to give thought to how we cultivate the gifts God has given us to manage. The daily meditations this week will lead us to a deeper understanding of how the more we nourish and cultivate God’s Gifts, the more readily we are willing to share those with others. Please take the time this week to reflect on the daily readings.

On the Way Campaña Capital.

F.I.A.T. Faith in Action Teens

Calling all High School teens who have been confirmed!!!

If you are a teen, have been Confirmed, looking to learn more about your Catholic Faith and want to serve others then FIAT is just for you! The word FIAT itself is from the Latin, literally meaning "Be it done;" it is the 'yes'' of Mary at the Annunciation - "Be it done unto me according to Thy word." At Confirmation you received the Gifts of the Holy Spirit, lets begin to see how you can use the gifts you have received. If you have any questions or are interested in being a part of FIAT please call Irma Bickel at 210 333-5020 or email at [email protected].

Mary’s Fiat is the supreme example of submitting ourselves to God’s will. She demonstrates to us the utmost act of humility. She responds to God’s authority. Looking at Mary’s submission to God’s authority tells not only about Mary, but also shows us a lot about God. God’s will works for the best in us. God’s will allows for freedom. God’s will operates out of love. http://catholiccounselorlady.com
