Seventh Sunday of

Ordinary Time February 23, 2020

Reading I: Leviticus 19:1-2,17-18 Responsorial Psalm 103:1-2,3-4,8,10,12-13 Reading II: 1 Corinthians 3:16-23 Gospel: Matthew 5:38-48

Theme: “I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those

who persecute you, that you may be children of your heavenly Father” (Gospel).

If the Sermon on the Mount constitutes the central teaching of Jesus Christ, then it is important for us Christians to get this right. “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,” commands Jesus. Probably what Proverbs says, “Do not gloat when your enemy falls; when they stumble, do not let your heart rejoice” (24:17) is easier to follow. But the command to love enemies is humanly impossible and impractically doable. But how can we call ourselves Christians if we cannot follow the heart of Christ’s teachings? The litmus test of faith in Jesus rests on fidelity to follow his command to love enemies.

In this sense, Jesus teachings are not easy. It is meant to challenge the capacity of the human heart to rise above hate and division. St. Paul reminds us of the original state of our being as God’s temple. “Do you not know that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person; for the temple of God, which you are, is holy” (1 Cor. 3:16-17). The grace of healing and forgiveness can only grow in a heart that recognizes God in obedience to His will and love.

When a person is driven by anger, revenge, and jealousy, nothing good can come out of it except to satisfy one’s evil desires or personal justice. Hatred expresses the worse of us and ruins the soul. “Take no revenge and cherish no grudge against any of your people. You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Leviticus 19:18). Redemption in Christ happens when we accede to the will and desires of God who loves us.

The Gospel concludes, “So be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect.” Tall order, yes but it is the path to genuine discipleship. After all, if the ultimate purpose of life is to be with God, loving like Jesus does is a certain way to achieve it.

Let us pray: Almighty God, create a new heart for us so we can love the way you love. Jesus, Son of God, teach us forgiveness so we can forgive all who offended us. Holy Spirit, strengthen us in our resolve to remain faithful in following God’s will, Amen.

Lectura I: Levítico 19: 1-2,17-18 Salmo Responsorial 103: 1-2,3-4,8,10,12-13 Lectura II: 1 Corintios 3: 16-23 Evangelio: Mateo 5: 38-48

Pastoral Reflection By Harry J. Perez, Pastoral Council Member

As we all face adversity everyday we must hold on to, through our faith, the reality that God really does exist and that he truly loves us; his children. Just as Moses also came to the conclusion that God exists and that he wanted Moses to lead, nurture and care for his people, we too are being asked to follow in Moses’s footsteps and do the same. God wants us to be a shining example, as to how to be true Christians. And just as God asked Moses to remind us that in order to truly love God, we, God’s children, must also love our neighbor, for our neighbor is God’s child as well. It is my thought that the answer to all our troubles in this world is very simple: if your about to do something for or against your neighbor and you would not want that done to you, then you will know that it is wrong. It is like oil and water; love and hate do not mix well together. Today’s gospel remains us, that the sun will rise again tomorrow “on the bad and good and causes rain to fall on the just and the unjust,” as well, for it is not for us to judge our neighbor not even ourselves. History has repeatedly shown us that the spirit of the free, will always triumph over those who choose to trample over the meek and humble. The spirit of the free is comprised of the Holy Spirit and Humanity working together to achieve God’s mission on earth. “As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him.” To know and love the Lord is to fear losing that love that he has for us. We must endeavor to stay in the grace of God, for not to do so puts us in the loneliness place in the universe. It’s a hell of a place to be.

The power and drama of Fr. Michael Gaitley's best-selling book The Second Greatest Story Ever Told are captured in an amazing visual presentation that will challenge and enthrall you. In 10 fast-paced and lively sessions, Fr. Gaitley connects people and events in history to a unifying vision of the splendor of God's merciful love. From the epic story of Poland's national suffering, to the events of Fatima, the revelations of St. Faustina, the heroic efforts of St. Maximilian Kolbe, and the life of St. John Paul II, the panorama of Divine mercy is fully revealed as a transformative reality. This amazing story comes to life like never before. In fact, you’ll not just learn about the consoling message of Divine Mercy, you’ll experience it.
