Come & Join the 2010 Misa de Gallo at Holy Name, Now on its 8th year!

Misa de Gallo or Simbang Gabi is a nine-day novena to prepare for Christmas. Traditionally, the novena begins December 16, as early as 4:00 A.M. Simbang Gabi, translated literally, means Mass at Night, for it is dark as night when this Mass is celebrated. In or about 1587, the Spanish missionary friars in the Philippines held a series of Masses outdoors to prepare for Christmas. Celebrated in the early morning hours when roosters crow to announce the coming of a new day, the Mass became known as Misa de Gallo, meaning Mass of the Rooster. This gave the farmers and fishermen a chance to hear Mass before setting out for the fields or upon returning from the seas.

This celebration has since then become a part of the Christmas experience in the Philippines, but the tradition took hold in San Francisco about 15 years ago. In the US, however, the liturgies are often moved to day's end to reflect the people’s work schedules. Still, the celebration always ends in the traditional post-Mass potlucks, which take place regardless of what time of day the novena is held. Most of the parishes in the San Francisco Archdiocese hold their novena Masses in the evening after work hours. Holy Name is one of a handful of parishes in the Archdiocese that holds its Masses before dawn in keeping with the tradition in the Philippines. The Simbang Gabi is often highlighted by the blessing of the parishes' traditional star-shaped lanterns, done during the annual Simbang Gabi Commissioning Mass, which ushers in the Simbang Gabi novena. The Philippine Christmas lantern, known as parol, evolved with the Simbang Gabi. Parol is a traditional Filipino Christmas decoration, a five point star-shaped Christmas lantern, originally made of thin bamboo frames and covered with colored cellophane or with rice paper also known as Japanese paper or papel de Japon. It has two tails that serve as the rays of the star. Parol reminds the Filipino Christians of the star of Bethlehem that guided the Three Kings on their way in search of Baby Jesus. A parol symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness, and evokes the shared faith and hope of humankind.

Around 40 parishes throughout the Archdiocese of San Francisco, have participated in the Simbang Gabi novena. A recollection led by Auxiliary Bishop John McElroy followed by the blessing of the parish parols and Simbang Gabi organizers during the Commissioning Mass on Dec. 11, 2010, celebrated by Auxiliary Bishop William Justice, to mark the start of the festivities this year. The Holy Name Parish will be holding its Misa de Gallo at the Flanagan Center starting Dec. 16 through Dec. 24, 2010, with Masses at 5:30 A.M., followed by a breakfast reception daily. - Holy Name 2010 Misa de Gallo Committee

To mark Holy Name of Jesus Church’s 85th An-niversary, a “Tree of Life”, a bronze tree trunk with approximately 400 leaves was installed at the back of the Church. Donors will have their names, or those they wish to honor, engraved

on the leaf. The proceeds of the donations to the “Tree of Life” will go towards a much-needed Cap-ital Improvement Fund. It is well known by all who gather here that we are constantly dealing with many repairs needed in our aging buildings (circa 1941, 1949 and 1964). We are confident that the funds raised from the Tree of Life will provide for some of the necessary expenses that we anticipate for the future. The Holy Name Tree of Life was un-veiled October 10, 2010 at the 85th Anniversary Mass and Pastor’s Installation presided by Most Rev. Robert McElroy. Each leaf costs $500 with a $25.00 engraving charge. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - YES, I would like to donate to the Holy Name Tree of Life Project

HOLY NAME OF JESUS’ TREE OF LIFE PROJECT

FAZtor ‘s Notes by Fr. Arnold Zamora It was Christmastime and a little boy went with his Mommy to attend a Marian Conference Exhibit where all the various images of the Blessed Virgin Mary were displayed. Amidst the many Marian devotees and while admiring the site, the boy suddenly asked his mother: “Mommy is it true the last name of Jesus’ mother is Christmas?” “Why son?” the surprised mother inquired. “Oh, I just heard someone addressing her and telling

me, Mary Christmas,” the boy replied. As the birth of the Lord approaches we hear these

two joyful words: “Merry Christmas.” I look at it as not just a simple greeting but a blissful wish translated as, “May you have a joyful Christmas.”

The liturgy on this Third Sunday of Advent which is known as “Gaudete Sunday” invites us to welcome the Lord with joy because He is already near. Gaudete comes from the Latin word, gaudium, which means “joy.” Today is the Sunday of Rejoicing.

Indeed, this week has been a Merry and a Mary week. Our 7th Graders from school had a joyful week at Caritas Creek. They were high spirited and full of excite-ment last Monday as they congregated to depart for their 5-day trip away from school, away from home. While they were gone, the whole school had a fun-filled Christmas concert last Thursday evening. The following day after the concert, I was in Texas attending the 25th priestly anniver-sary of a friend. It was indeed a day of rejoicing and a hap-py occasion for the whole parish of the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Odessa. Although it was only a one-short day of rejoicing for me in Texas, as I have to fly early the following day to continue the rejoicing with the Arch-diocesan commissioning of the Simbang Gabi (“Evening Mass”) at Mater Dolorosa and then our Homebound Mass and Christmas Party at the Flanagan Center.

While rejoicing with God’s people in Texas, I missed the Holy Name School Staff and Faculty Christmas Mass party at Nicole and Blake’s house. I am sure our teachers had a nice time and a Merry week too.

Lest we forget, it was a Mary Week too. We celebrat-ed two important feasts in honor of our Blessed Mother Mary: The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception and the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Merry or Mary Christmas, we rejoice!
