Father John’s forum

“Lazarus, Come Forth!” The raising of Lazarus – along with Jesus’ dialogue with the apostles and later with Mary, in which he makes clear that he is not only the One who is to come but also the Resurrection and the Life – is an astonishing episode in an already astounding life. The evangelist has made credible the incredible by so many details and especially by the unexpected description of Christ’s becoming deeply emotionally distressed. Since the text indicates that Christ intended to restore the dead brother to his sisters, why was he so troubled? Perhaps it’s simply a sympathy and tenderness at seeing the grief of his friends. The raising of Lazarus is steeped in mystery with many unanswerable questions. Yet this mystery the mind can deal with. The Resurrection of Jesus by his own divine power and his Ascension back to God are beyond all human understanding. They do not contradict human reason; they go beyond where it can go. They bring us to the edge of the infinite sea of God’s life. All is divine mystery, unfathomable and inscrutable. The raising of Lazarus, so close in time to Christ’s own Resurrection, was a preparation for the events to come. Lazarus died again, and his body and soul will be reunited on the last day. Jesus rose and will never die again and will call us all at death and on the last day. (Groeschel, C.F.R., Fr. Benedict, The King, Crucified and Risen, Servant Books, 2002)

Fifth Sunday in Lent

Forgiveness “To forgive another person from the heart is an act of liberation. We set that person free from the negative bonds that exist between us. We say, “I no longer hold your offense against you.” We also free ourselves from the burden of being the “offended one.” As long as we do not forgive those who have wounded us, we carry them with us, or worse, pull them as a heavy load. The great temptation is to cling in anger to our ene-mies and then define ourselves as being offended and wound-ed by them. Forgiveness, therefore, liberates not only the other but also our-selves.” (Fr. Henri Nouwen) Lenten Penance Service The Church is solicitous in calling the faithful to contin-ued conversion and renewal. It desires that the baptized should acknowledge their sins against God and their neighbor and have heartfelt repentance for them. Therefore, everyone is encouraged to attend our Lenten Penance Service on Monday, April 7 at 7:00pm. Seven priests will be present to hear confessions and bring Christ’s mercy and for-giveness. Prepare your hearts for Easter by making a good confession.

Celebrating Reconciliation While reconciliation is what God does, receiving it and celebrating it are what we do. For Catholics, the Sacrament of Reconciliation is the most natural way to celebrate God’s reconciliation. It is God who forgives sins. God forgives us the very moment we realize we need forgiveness, which itself comes from God’s grace. When we experience God’s forgiveness and love, we are touched deeply. Experiencing compassion, patience, under-standing and forgiveness is itself transforming. We need to celebrate the reconciliation we have received. In this sac-rament, our personal journey is joined with the mystery of God’s saving love, as seen in the Scriptures and in God’s desire to save us all. May Our Lord grant us all the gift of reconciliation, and may we all receive it and celebrate it well in the holy days ahead.
