Second Sunday of Advent December 10, 2017

Dear Parishioners, I

like Advent. It is a season

of light, which is some-

thing so needed in this

time of year when dark-

ness comes early each

day. Our world is a

bright, shining gift from

God. But at times our

world is shaded in dark-

ness. Christ is God’s gift

of light to us. In Advent I

think of a simple but pro-

foundly helpful piece of

advice I once got: When

darkness threatens, al-

ways turn toward the

light. This means that if

sin, temptation, discour-

agement, harshness, re-

sentments, self-

centeredness, and the

like, somehow close in

on me or us, or if they

seem to well up within us, can we turn toward choosing the

way of Christ, who brings light as an antidote to those bad

things? So, to review the list just detailed, Christ brings

forgiveness to me and asks me to be forgiving when I meet

you, also a sinner. Christ gives me strength to resist tempta-

tion. Christ encourages me. Christ offers me his kindness

and prods me toward being kind to you. Christ not only

advises me to let go of fruitless resentments but also nudges

me to consider my blessings. Christ invites us to keep lov-

ing ourselves while striving to put others first. In the Eu-

charist, the Mass, He especially comes with these kinds of

light for us. He comes so close as to be the spiritual food

we receive into our very selves in communion.

Facilities Update

12/7/2017

At the Parkway park-

ing lot entrance of the

Church parking lot,

work started on the

installation of a trench

drain. This will elimi-

nate the rain water flowing down the walkway and into the

Lower Church.

At the Centre parking lot entrance, another trench will be

dug for the electrical to re-install the pole lamp lights and

have the spotlights activated for the memorial for the un-

born.

Lastly, the HNP Church signs are being replaced.

Thank you for your patience as this work is completed.

Continued from Page 1

When you or I are in a position to choose

some words, actions or attitudes that are

less than the best, let’s picture Christ

standing near us. In that setting Christ is

not chiding you or belittling you. Christ is

there to help you turn toward what is holy,

wholesome, joy-filled, peaceful and moral-

ly upright. To put it simply, when we are

beset with temptation or sadness, which

are forms of darkness, turn toward the

light that is Christ’s way of living. Christ is rooting for

you! Your desire and ability to embrace the light when

darkness threatens is itself Christ’s and His Spirit’s

prompting you to leave darkness behind. In that setting,

turn your back to darkness and look toward—and make a

concerted move toward—the light.

But darkness need not always be a metaphor for what is

bad. St. John of the Cross (1542-1591), an Advent saint

whose feast day is December 14, makes an interesting and

more positive use of darkness, such as falls upon us in the

night. He spoke of our life in Christ as a movement from a

day that is ebbing away to a new, bright, promising day. To

move from one day to the next, we must pass through

night. For him, night is not something bad, but is a time of

restorative transition—just as we get when we sleep during

the night. Night may be scary if we are trying to walk sure-

footed, or it may well be uninvitingly dull compared to

day’s clarity and day's many activities. Night can be pain-

ful, but it can be what we may call a “growing pain,” one

that accompanies our healing and signals our being made

stronger. For John of the Cross, night represents the need

for trust that God is there for us even when we cannot see

Him so clearly. The light of the new day is glorious, but the

darkness of its preceding night is constructive. Night can

stand for our resting in God, and for our not being in con-

trol while God is guiding us forward to new experiences,

ones now beyond our seeing and understanding. Night rep-

resents our trust in God, whose ways sometimes confound

us.

The Sacrament of Reconciliation can be an entering into

our darkness, by naming our sins, but our confessing them

also is a movement toward receiving the light of healing

and forgiveness that our God brings to us in the absolution

received as the crowning moment of

Reconciliation. Advent is a season

when Reconciliation fits us well as we

journey toward the bright light of

Christ at Christmas.

Advent is quite short this year, but let’s

make the most of it.

Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you;

He will prepare your way.

DECEMBER 10, 2017 SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT

Looking to get “into”

Advent? The Tuesday

Bible Study groups will

explore the readings for

each Sunday of Advent.

You can come for one

session or all the time, it’s up to you. Each week we pray,

discuss and study (a little) what the upcoming Sunday’s

readings have to say to us. For the next 4 weeks the topic

will be all Advent, all the time. Groups meet in the Rectory

Meeting Room, (use rear Rectory entrance off the parking

lot).

December 12 MORNINGS • 9:00-10:15am • with Bill Dittrich

EVENINGS • 7:00-8:15pm • with Deacon Tim Donohue

A Giving Tree is setup in the Upper and

Lower Churches. Please take a wish gift

tag, purchase the requested gift, attach the

tag and place the UNWRAPPED gift under

the tree. Return all gifts by December 17.

Members of the St. Vincent de Paul Society

will distribute the items to Brockton Catho-

lic Charities, St. Ambrose Family Shelter

and the Nazareth Family Shelter; as well as

to families in the area. If you know of some-

one who could benefit by receiving some-

thing from the Giving Tree, or if you know

of a family with a specific need, please contact the Rectory,

so the generosity of Holy Name parishioners may be better

shared. There is a great need; and, in the past, recipients

have been most grateful for your generosity.
