The Connection Between Mass and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

Recalling that we have exposition of the Most Holy Eucharist on Mondays from 7:00 to 8:00 pm,

I thought these comments from Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI to be most insightful. I feel he

beautifully explains the connection between Mass and adoration. It is a good refection for all of

us and enables us to take greater advantage of the opportunity we have here of adoring Jesus

in Blessed Sacrament. And by doing so, not only come closer to the Lord in our prayer but also

when receive Him in Holy Communion.

Now on to the words of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI…

“It is moving for me to see how everywhere in the Church the joy of Eucharistic adoration is reawakening and being fruitful. In the period of liturgical reform, Mass and adoration outside it were often seen as in opposition to one another: it was thought that the Eucharistic Bread had not been given to us to be contemplated, but to be eaten, as a widespread objection claimed at that time.

The experience of the prayer of the Church has already shown how nonsensical this antithesis was. Augustine had formerly said: "...nemo autem illam carnem manducat, nisi prius adoraverit;...

peccemus non adorando” – “No one should eat this flesh without first adoring it;... we should sin were we not to adore it" .

Indeed, we do not merely receive something in the Eucharist. It is the encounter and unification of persons; the person, however, who comes to meet us and desires to unite himself to us is the Son of God. Such unification can only be brought about by means of adoration.

Receiving the Eucharist means adoring the One whom we receive. Precisely in this way and only in this way do we become one with him. Therefore, the development of Eucharistic adoration, as it took shape during the Middle Ages, was the most consistent consequence of the Eucharistic mystery itself: only in adoration can profound and true acceptance develop. And it is precisely this personal act of encounter with the Lord that develops the social mission which is contained in the Eucharist and desires to break down barriers, not only the barriers between the Lord and us but also and above all those that separate us from one another.”

Try to come out to Adoration on Mondays. If you can’t make it, stop in to a Catholic Church

wherever you can and spend some time before our Eucharistic Lord present in the tabernacle.

It will always be time well spent. And as Pope Benedict reminds us, it will not only help us to

come closer to Jesus, but make our experience at Mass better and more fruitful.

God bless you,

Father Joseph Byerley

READINGS FOR THE WEEK

Prayer for Spiritual CommunionPrayer for Spiritual CommunionPrayer for Spiritual CommunionPrayer for Spiritual Communion My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.

I love you above all things and I desire to receive you in my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace you as if you were already there and unite myself wholly to you.

Never permit me to be separated from you. Amen.

September 20—25TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Reading 1: Isaiah 55: 6-9 Seek the LORD while he may be found, call him while he is near. Let the scoundrel forsake his way, and the wicked his thoughts; let him turn to the LORD for mercy; to our God, who is generous in forgiving. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways, says the LORD. As high as the heavens are above the earth, so high are my ways above your ways and my thoughts above your thoughts.

Reading 2: Phillipians 1:20c-24, 27a Brothers and sisters: Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me life is Christ, and death is gain. If I go on living in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. And I do not know which I shall choose. I am caught between the two. I long to depart this life and be with Christ, for that is far better. Yet that I remain in the flesh is more necessary for your benefit. Only, conduct yourselves in a way worthy of the gospel of Christ.

Gospel: Matthew 20: 1-16a Jesus told his disciples this parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out at dawn to hire laborers for his vineyard. After agreeing with them for the usual daily wage, he sent them into his vineyard. Going out about nine o’clock, the landowner saw others standing idle in the marketplace, and he said to them, ‘You too go into my vineyard, and I will give you what is just.’

So they went off. And he went out again around noon, and around three o’clock, and did likewise. Going out about five o’clock, the landowner found others standing around, and said to them, ‘Why do you stand here idle all day?’ They answered, ‘Because no one has hired us.’ He said to them, ‘You too go into my vineyard.’

When it was evening the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Summon the laborers and give them their pay, beginning with the last and ending with the first.’

When those who had started about five o’clock came, each received the usual daily wage. So when the first came, they thought that they would receive more, but each of them also got the usual wage. And on receiving it they grumbled against the landowner, saying, ‘These last ones worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us, who bore the day’s burden and the heat.’

He said to one of them in reply, ‘My friend, I am not cheating you. Did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? Take what is yours and go. What if I wish to give this last one the same as you? Or am I not free to do as I wish with my own money? Are you envious because I am generous?’

Thus, the last will be first, and the first will be last.”

Reading I: Isaiah 55: 6-9 These verses comprise the conclusion of the so-called “Book of Comfort” in Isaiah. We are told to seek the Lord outside of the sanctuary. God is so completely different from us, that it is unwise to ascribe motives or methods to Him that we might have. He is hidden, yet He is also close to us.

Reading II: Philippians 1: 20c-24, 27a Paul writes that through his baptism he has “died” as it were to his former life, and now lives an existence completely taken over by Christ.

The Gospel: Matthew 20: 1-16a The parable we hear is all about God’s generosity, and not about labor rights. His goodness comes to the fore in His love for the most needy.

Monday: Eph 4:1-7, 11-13; Ps 19:2-3, 4-5; Mt 9:9-13 Tuesday: Prv 21:1-6, 10-13; Ps 119:1, 27, 30, 34, 35, 44; Lk 8:19-21 Wednesday: Prv 30:5-9; Ps 119:29, 72, 89, 101, 104, 163; Lk 9:1-6 Thursday: Eccl 1:2-11; Ps 90:3-4, 5-6, 12-13, 14 and 17bc; Lk 9:7-9 Friday: Eccl 3:1-11; Ps 144:1b and 2abc, 3-4; Lk 9:18-22 Saturday: Eccl 11:9—12:8; Ps 90:3-4, 5-6, 12-13, 14 and 17; Lk 9:43b-45 Sunday: Ez 18:25-28; Ps 25:4-5, 8-9, 10, 14; Phil 2:1-11 or 2:1-5; Mt 21:28-32

May I be faithful to this call, rooted in your Word, and open to the gifts of the Holy Spirit. May I use these gifts, especially the gifts of faith, hope, and love, to serve my family as a witness to you, who are love and life and the source and destiny of all families.

Let your Spirit enlighten my mind and strengthen my heart so that I can be a path of Christ’s love to my families, especially those in need, the homebound and aged, the disabled and disheartened.

Through the intercession of Mary and Joseph, I pray for the Church, the Bride of Christ, whose mission to build a civilization of love passes through the family.

P B & J ENDURES! Covid – 19 has been hard for so many. Our usual ways of living had to be adapted. Yet, lots of creativity and ingenuity seems to have come from this difficult time.

Over the past few years, children from our Religious Education program, and those who met with them, made “tons” of sandwiches for distribution at Joseph House and Cathedral Pantry. With Covid-19 came the shutting down of group sandwich making.

BUT….18 families have come to the rescue in the past few months to contribute to that action of love and justice. Thank You! Parents and grandparents gathered with their children in the safety of their homes and helped that project endure. Thank You very much.

If YOU would like to join them, all you need are a couple loaves of bread, peanut butter, jelly or jam, and plastic bags or wax paper. Have a party – but remind all who participate, the work of Jesus that is being done.

Call Jean or Jerry Washko at 856-304-0381 and they will make arrangements for you to drop them off at their house or for to pick them up at yours. No special day is better than another. When the Spirit moves you, do it and then call. Thank You!

BIBLE STUDY – OCTOBER 2020 (THE PARABLES OF JESUS PART I)

If we are ready to resume our Holy Angels Bible Study this Fall, it would be done according to the existing COVID guidelines including distancing and masks.

However, the first issue is to get an accurate number of those who would feel comfortable to come out during this period of time.

If we were to have a Study, the topic offered is The Parables of Jesus, Part 1. It would be done on a Thursday night beginning sometime in October at a site yet to be determined, based on how many might come. The topic will entail six sessions. A fee of $25 will be charged for those who can afford it to cover the materials that need to be purchased.

Therefore, if you are interested, please call 856-845-6944 or email [email protected] leaving your name and contact info. We cannot go any further with planning until we know the number of those who would attend. This is very important. The deadline for this registration would be September 30th. Anyone wanting to come after that date will not be able to be accommodated.

On October 8 at 6:00 PM, join our virtual awards ceremony or, "like" and follow our social media channels. There are no tickets for this year’s event, and all are welcome to join. However, we prayerfully ask that you consider making a donation or sponsoring the event. This year, more than ever, Catholic Charities needs your support to serve thousands of individuals impacted by COVID-19, as well as the 24,000 individuals who we serve annually. You can make a donation to Catholic Charities’ Justice for All fund at any time.

Celebrate our Honorees! We are proud to honor Bishop Dennis Sullivan this year for his lifelong commitment to social justice and Catholic social ministry. We will also be honoring five local Disciples of Mercy (to be announced this week) who put their faith into action by carrying out works of mercy to the vulnerable in our Diocese.

For questions about the event, call 856-583-6126 or e-mail [email protected].

Catholic Charities needs your support more than ever.

DID YOU KNOW THE HOUSE OF CHARITY IS A DONOR CHOICE FOR MANY EMPLOYEE GIVING CAMPAIGNS?

Many businesses will begin their Employee Giving Campaigns this month and continue to solicit donations through the fall months. Employee Giving/United Way campaigns give us an opportunity to direct our donations to the charities that best represents our beliefs, interests and social concerns.

Ask your employer for a pledge card and be sure to:

In the Donor Choice Section, designate the “HOUSE of Charity“

Ask to be acknowledged! This ensures our parish will receive credit toward our House of Charity goal.

If the agency requests a code for your donor choice…these codes may be found on the House of Charity website under “Employee Giving Campaign” and in the Catholic Star Herald.

Please send along your completed form to House of Charity – Diocese of Camden 631 Market Street Camden, NJ 08102.
