THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER APRIL 15, 2018

Dear Parish Family,

On this third Sunday of Easter, we reflect upon another post-Resurrection encounter the apostles have of the Risen Lord. He reminds them that in His Resurrected Body, He continues to have flesh, bones, and eats, although He is no longer subject to time, space, or decay. He further opens up the Scriptures to them on the necessity of His suffering in order to redeem us as the perfect sacrifice.

It is through these post-Resurrection encounters with the Risen Lord that the apostles truly undergo transformation and become one in mind and heart. The gift of the Holy Spirit given to them allows them to understand more deeply the meaning of the Paschal Mystery. This helps them on their own path to holiness and discipleship. This past week, the Vatican released the most recent Apostolic Exhortation by Pope Francis, Gaudete et Exsultate (On the call to Holiness). In it, our Holy Father reminds us that each of us has a particular path to holiness, which takes on many forms in living out our daily lives. It is all, however, a work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Pope Francis states:

We are all called to be holy by living our lives with love and by bearing witness in everything we do, wherever we find ourselves. Are you called to the consecrated life? Be holy by living out your commitment with joy. Are you married? Be holy by loving and caring for your husband or wife, as Christ does for the Church. Do you work for a living? Be holy by labouring with integrity and skill in the service of your brothers and sisters. Are you a parent or grandparent? Be holy by patiently teaching the little ones how to follow Jesus. Are you in a position of authority? Be holy by working for the common good and renouncing personal gain (GE, 14).

As a parish community, we follow our path to holiness by supporting each other and helping one another grow as disciples, recognizing each person’s gifts and collaborating in using those gifts to build the kingdom and evangelize to those who have not encountered the Risen Jesus. This may seem like a difficult task, but that is only the case if we believe the task is a personal one and not the working of the Holy Spirit in each of us as an instrument of God’s manifold grace.

Like the apostles in the gospel, our encounter with the Risen Christ transforms us to be of one heart and mind as we work to continue the Lord’s mission of proclaiming the gospel in this particular place, which is our path to holiness.

Let us ask our Blessed Mother, Queen of Apostles and spouse of the Holy Spirit, to assist us as a model of discipleship and intercessor of grace in following the path of holiness that God has laid out for each of us.

In Christ,Fr. Joe Previte
