Feast of our Lady of the ‘Most Holy’
Rosary Mass in the Grotto
We will be celebrating the Feast of our Lady
of the Rosary on October 7 in the Grotto.
The Knights of Columbus and Young Ladies
Institute will be
providing a reception
after mass, all are wel-
come to join students
in this celebration.
The Roman Catholic Church celebrates this
yearly feast, known for several centuries by
the alternate title of “Our Lady of Victory,”
the feast day takes place in honor of a 16th
century naval victory which secured Europe
against Turkish invasion. Pope St. Pius V at-
tributed the victory to the intercession of
the Blessed Virgin Mary, who was invoked
on the day of the battle through a campaign
to pray the Rosary throughout Europe. Our
parish and school’s namesakes come from
this feast day.
Understanding Common Core Math
This Oct. 10 workshop is geared for parents
to help understand what Common Core
Math is and how to support the implementa-
tion and student learning. There’s certainly
some confusion and misconceptions from
many parents about what the standards actu-
ally are. Putting the pros and cons aside, we
will take a look at the basics of the Common
Core. The better parents understand the
benchmarks, the easier it’ll be to help our
kids meet them and be successful when ap-
plying math.
Virtue of the Month—Patriotism
Congratulations to our students who re-
ceived the Patriotism Virtue awards for the
month of September. All students are eligi-
ble to receive these awards by exemplifying
and the Virtue of the month. Awardees are
selected by their teachers, staff and peers.
Activities in the Classrooms
3/4– This week students created their own 10
Commandments book, which helped them under-
stand each Commandment better. In math, third
grade is working on adding and subtracting 3 digit
numbers with regrouping and borrowing. In 4th
grade math, they just completed a review of place
value and all potential outcomes for a given situa-
tion.
TK/K— We celebrated St. Francis of Assisi and the
blessing of the animals last week, thank you to
those who sent in representations of your ani-
mals. The K’s had their first Make It-Write It! activ-
ity in which the students make something and then
draw/write about it in their monthly journal. In
math, the students are learning to count with 1-to-1
correspondence. Our ant farm arrived, so we read
a book about how ants live and form their colo-
nies. Along with gathering and collecting fall leaves,
the students have been comparing and matching
green leaves that still have stored sugar with the
same type of yellow/brown leaves that have lost
their sugar content. Next week the Art Ladies will
be doing a project with these leaves. We will also
be studying pumpkins in preparation for our field
trip on Wednesday.
5/6— Students learned about the importance of the
Ten Commandments. They completed an activity to
help remember and understand the meaning of
them. 6th graders finished learning about patterns
and equations in their Math class. Students also
took charge of leading their first parent/teacher
conferences, great job!
1/2—Both first and second grade student’s partici-
pated in Stars and Wishes where students get an
opportunity to read their written story to class-
mates while sitting in the author’s chair. Classmates
raise their hands and volunteer to say a Wish or a
Star. A wish is something that could be improved
or added, a star is a com-
pliment "I like the way
you..." In ELA, first grade
students studied about
buildings and what they are
made of. Second graders
did some comparing and
contrast activities using
two stories, “The Boy Who Cried Wolf” and The
Wolf Who Cried Boy!”
