CHRISTMAS, A GLAD TIME or A SAD TIME The holiday times are joyous for most people, filled with good times with family and friends. Some people, however, experience sadness and pain during Christmas over memories of lost loved ones. Do you need a friend to help you at this time? To listen, to be understanding, and just be there for you? If so, consider calling

upon Stephen Ministry. We care. Our ministry is confidential. To get more in-formation or to arrange for a Stephen Minister call David Chaffee at 913-317-8393, Leader of Stephen Ministry. God Bless.

RELIGIOUS GIVE THANKS.

“We cannot begin to repay all who contribute,” writes a Catholic sister. “So we pray to God, who is never out-done in generosity, to reward

you.” Heartfelt thanks for your donation to last week’s collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious. May God bless you for your goodness!

The Year of Mercy Began on December 8, 2015- ARE YOU PARTICIPATING?

Pope Francis is inviting us to grow in mercy and holiness during this liturgical year. Join your fellow pilgrims at Holy Spirit on the journey toward the cross this Lenten Season by participating in a Group Retreat based on the second book in the ALL HEARTS A FIRE Parish Program, Consoling the Heart of Jesus by Fr. Michael Gaitley. The theology of the book focuses on the Divine Mercy Devotion of St. Faustina and St. John Paul II and provides an insightful and spirit filled reflection for the Lenten

Season. Group retreats include self-study and reflection in the book and work-book companion and 90 minutes weekly meetings that include discus-sion and a teaching DVD by Fr. Gaitley. This session will conclude two weeks before Holy Week, to allow for Spring Break. Already read the book or participated in a group retreat? Perfect! This book is written in text that is both easy to understand and rich with spiritual depth. Most retreatants request an opportunity to participate in the retreat again as soon as the group concludes. Why? Spiritual growth takes time, practice and discipline. Your faith life will be enriched by making the retreat again with new friends and you will have the opportunity to perform works of mercy by encouraging others to make the retreat alongside you. WEDNESDAY AFTERNOONS: JAN 6 – MARCH 9 - 1:00-2:30 pm in the MARTHA & MARY ROOM WEDNESDAY EVENINGS: JAN 6 – MARCH 9- 7:00-8:30 pm downstairs in the MULTI PURPOSE ROOM To register or for more information contact Anne Kinskey [email protected] If you are unable to find a time that works with your schedule contact me and we will try to find a parish that has a retreat that does or coordinate a retreat group in home.

HOLY SPIRIT PARISHIONERS. Thank you sincerely for your participation in our peanut brittle sales. While you hopefully are enjoying the scrumptious taste sensations, please know that your sweet efforts do benefit the entire music ministry including new music, instrumentation, and anything musically adding to the beautiful litur-gies. Holy Spirit is an awesome parish! Thanks again...looking forward to next Christmas! Holy Spirit Singers, 10:30 am Choir

Please remember in your prayers Donna Penson, whose funeral was at Holy Spirit.

SISTER M. TERESA, FSGM School of Religion

From Pope Francis Jesus, the Son of God, the Savior of the world, is born

for us, born in Bethlehem of a Virgin, fulfilling the ancient prophecies. The Virgin’s name is Mary, the wife of Joseph. Humble people, full of hope in the goodness of God, are those who welcome Jesus and recognize Him. And so the Holy Spirit enlightened the shepherds of Bethlehem, who hastened to the grotto and adored the Child. Then the Spirit led the elderly and humble couple Simeon and Anna into the temple of Jerusalem, and they recognized in Jesus the Messiah. “My eyes have seen your salvation,” Simeon exclaimed, “the salvation prepared by God in the sight of all peoples” (Lk 2:30). Yes, brothers and sisters, Jesus is the salvation for every person and for every people! Pope Francis, Excerpt from 2014 Christmas Message

Please continue to pray for our 15 participants in our RCIA class who continue on the journey towards the Catholic faith. They participated in the Rite of Welcoming and Acceptance... "Assembling publicly for the first time, those who have completed the period of pre-catechumenate declare their intention to the Church and the Church in turn, carrying out its apostolic mission, accepts them as persons who intend to become its members. God showers His grace on the candidates, since the celebration manifests their desire publicly and marks their reception and first consecration by the Church... The prerequisite for making this first step is that the beginnings of the spiritual life and the fundamentals of Christian teaching have taken root in the candidates."

Hour of Code December 7-13 was Computer Science Week. Holy Spirit participated in the Hour of Code to help celebrate the week and spark an on-going interest in computer science with our students. During computer class, the students in grades 1 through 6 completed tasks on the website code.org. The Hour of Code pro-gram is a one hour tutorial that introduces them to computer science and cod-ing. Their progress is monitored through a teacher website. Once they have completed an hour of coding, they receive a certificate to recognize their ac-complishment. There are close to 200,000 Hour of Code Events going on around the world. Holy Spirit is excited to be one of them!

CATHOLIC CHARITIES CHRISTMAS COLLECTION Nearly half of American households are one emergency away from financial disaster. That could be the neighbor on your left; the one to your right. Maybe it’s you. Angie and Larry were living modestly, working to make ends meet and pro-vide for their family. In June, Larry had a health crisis that resulted in emer-gency surgery that left him unable to work for several weeks. They struggled paying the bills that were quickly mounting. Then, the unthinkable happened. Just before Larry was cleared to return to work, he suffered a series of small strokes that caused seizures. The doctor deemed it unsafe for Larry to return to his line of work at all. When the couple met with a Catholic Charities case manager their utilities were on the verge of being disconnected. The summer heat had resulted in a very high electricity bill that the couple was desperately trying to pay down. With the assistance of Catholic Charities and the cooperation of the utility company, a manageable payment plan was negotiated to ensure their utilities would remain in service. Your support enables Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas to continue to serve our neighbors in need.

“Martha Mary Ministry”- Do you like to cook for those in need? Or do you know someone or a family who is experiencing a medical crisis or a period of bereavement and would benefit from meals pre-pared by others? The Martha Mary Ministry is using the website www.takethemameal.com. If you know of someone who would like to cook or receive meals, contact Ellyn Tyrell at [email protected] and put “Martha Mary Ministry” as the subject.
