Today is known as Gaudete Sunday. The term Gaudete is a Latin word , meaning “Rejoice.” The theme of Advent is to focus on the

coming of Jesus by preparing for the feast of Christmas as well as the second coming of Christ. This is shown through the Liturgy, with the

exception of Gaudete Sunday, where the emphasis is on the joy that should be in our hearts and gladness in the promised Redemption.

Pope Francis said in his 2014 Gaudete homily, that Gaudete Sunday is known as the “Sunday of joy,” and instead of fretting about “all they

still haven’t” done to prepare for Christmas, people should “think of all the good things life has given you.”

Those whom the LORD has ransomed will return and enter Zion singing, crowned with everlasting joy.
