Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust

into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Gaudete Sunday

The annual St. Cecilia Christmas Day dinner will be noon until 2 PM on Tuesday, Dec. 25, in the school cafeteria. The dinner is free of charge and open to all. We would love to see you there. Meal deliveries are available by calling Peggy at 321-0650. All requests for meal deliveries must be made by Friday, Dec. 21, at 5 PM.

One of our greatest needs each year is for individuals to donate their time and talent to this cause. Whatever help you can give will be greatly appreciated. We need hams and funds to put on this meal. Monetary donations can be dropped in the collection basket marked “Christmas Dinner” or mailed to the St. Cecilia rectory. For any of the numerous volunteer opportunities available, please call Julie at 478-3575. We will need people to cut the hams and prepare the fixings (especially Sunday, Dec. 23, the day hams are requested to be dropped off), set up the cafeteria, serve, wash dishes, prepare carry-out, engage in hospitality, deliver meals and help with clean-up. With your help we can bring the spirit of Christmas to our community and show them the love of Jesus.

In an effort to address the SAFETY AND SECURITY concerns at each church, a Safety Committee is being formed to exam-ine them. Each church will have its own committee who will meet to form a comprehensive plan and then help to commu-nicate that plan to the congregation. This will be an ad hoc committee with a limited scope that will meet in January and February of 2019. Those with experience in Police/Fire/EMT, mental health counseling, and emergency planning are encouraged to contact Matt Springer at [email protected] for more information.

As we have been preparing for the coming of Jesus, we have been lighting a candle on our Advent wreath each weekend. The third candle marks Gaudete Sunday. We will light the rose-colored candle, and the priests will wear rose-colored vestments.

One of the new traditions we are starting this year is the blessing of the Christ Child figure. This tradition helps us prepare for Jesus’ coming by bringing our Christ Child figures from our creches to Mass and having them blessed by the priest. This tradition brings sanctification to the home with the arrival of the baby Jesus. What a beautiful and joyful moment to bring the blessed figure of the baby and lay it in the manger.

Amen? Amen!

“ The time of grace has come— What we have wished for; Songs of joy let us give back faithfully. God has become man, With nature marvelling, The world has been renewed by the reigning Christ. The closed gate of Ezekiel is passed through, Whence the light is risen; Salvation has been found. Therefore, let our preaching now sing in brightness let it bless the Lord: Greeting to our King.” – Gaudete

DEDICATION OF ALTAR: One of the projects going on at St. Cecilia is the sanctuary restoration project. Not only are the floors being restored but a new altar was built (photos 1 and 2). The main body of the altar was made out of reclaimed communion rail that came from old St. Mi-chael‘s Church in Price Hill. The cost of this new altar was completely covered by a very generous gift to the parish earmarked for this project. To use a new altar, it must first be dedicated by a bishop. Dedication of the altar was done by Archbishop Schnurr at 10 AM Mass on Dec. 9. 1 ST. CECILIA MOMS GROUP: The moms had a kid-free evening of crafting with Grapevine Crafting. They enjoyed the time for fellowship and went home with homemade crafts (photo 3). 1 REGIONAL MISSION INSPIRES: We were lucky to have had with us Fr. Tony Stephens (photo 4) and our own Msgr. Frank Lane (photo 5) for the Advent mission. Fr. Tony, a religious priest from the Fathers of Mercy, is the vice-rector of Mount St. Mary Seminary in Mt. Washington. 1 DIVINE MERCY ADVENT FAIR AND COLLECTION: Divine Mercy Homeschool Co-op, one of the tenants in SMSJ’s school building, had a very successful Advent Fair (photo 6) on Dec. 3. There were vendors with many homemade items—

four of whom were students! Also, Divine Mercy Homeschool Co-op collected and donated over $8,000 toward replacing SMSJ’s boiler. Many thanks to all of you. We are so grateful for your generosity. 1 WELCOME, CHILDREN OF GOD: Welcome to Aiden Mark, son of David and Nicole Winterhalter (photo 7, on the left), and Emme Louise, daughter of Kyle and Michelle Stechschulte (photo 7, on the right). Please keep these little ones in your prayers.

The Patroness of MusicSt. Cecilia Parish — honoring the patroness of music — is fortunate to have so many talented and gifted ladies and men willing to share their individual talents. Together they comprise a dynamic music ministry that enhances our liturgies. The St. Cecilia Choir has recorded four CDs in the last seven years — The Darkest Hour (a meditation on the Passion of Christ), Christmas 2013, Ave Maria (hymns honoring our blessed Mother), and Christ the King (a collection of hymns praising God and the Eucharist). If you are new to the region or missed one of these releases, you can purchase any one or all of these recordings for $10 each. They make great birthday or Christmas gifts. See Director of Music Ministry Bob Kellison before or after any Mass to purchase any or all!

AVE MARIAHail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you.Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.Holy Mary, Mother of God,pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.

MEMORARERemember O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known, that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided.Inspired with this confidence we fly unto you, O Virgin of virgins, our Mother. To you we come, before you we stand, sinful and sorrowful,O Mother of the Word Incarnate.Despise not our petitions, but in your mercy hear and answer them.

MAGNIFICATMy soul magnifies the Lordand my spirit rejoices in God my Savior;because He has regarded the lowliness of His handmaid;for behold, henceforth all generations shall call me blessed;because He who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is His name. His mercy is from generation to generationon those who fear Him.He has shown might with His arm.He has scattered the proud in the conceit of their heart. He has put down the mighty from their thrones, and has exalted the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich He has sent away empty. He has given help to Israel, his servant, mindful of His mercy even as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his posterity forever.

Being Pro-LifeEach month an important respect life topic is covered by an engaging interview with someone personally affected by the issue. You can find each Being Pro-Life column in The Catholic Telegraph, but you need to go online to watch the video or listen to the podcast. Past topics are still available to watch on abortion and assisted suicide. This month’s topic is migration. It features the story of a young man brought to the United States at four years old, and how the Dream Act made it possible for him to go to college and get a good job. Invite your parishioners, family and friends to check out the link at www.catholiccincinnati.org/Being-Pro-Life.

“You must ask God to give you power to fight against the sin of pride which is your greatest enemy — the root of all that is evil, and the failure of all that is good.

For God resists the proud.” - St. Vincent de Paul

“Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Emmanuel.” – Isaiah 7:14

e Advent Prefaces for the Eucharistic PrayerAs the new liturgical year begins, people will hear one of two

Advent prefaces to start the Eucharistic prayer of every Mass.

Both of these prefaces were newly composed after the Second

Vatican Council in order to enrich the community’s prayer.

Earlier, there were no special prefaces for Advent. The first

option is prayed until December 17 each year, when the

second preface takes over.

During the Liturgy of the Word at Mass, Advent opens

with New Testament readings about the second coming of

Christ, and the first Advent preface repeats this theme. It

speaks of the coming of Christ in human flesh and his return

in glory and majesty. It looks for the day when the faithful

may inherit the great promise for which they hope. It calls to

mind many Scripture passages, such as Romans 8:19, which

says that all creation eagerly awaits God’s revelation.

The second Advent preface accompanies the final period

of the season, the last full week before Christmas. At daily

Mass, the Liturgy of the Word includes Gospel readings that

tell of the events leading up to the birth of Jesus in Bethle-

hem. The second Advent preface tells about the prophets who

foretold his coming and the longing that Mary had for him.

It even mentions John the Baptist, whose birth, preaching,

and death foreshadowed Jesus. It says we rejoice so that

Christ may find us watchful in prayer when he comes. The

second Advent preface calls to mind passages such as 1 Peter

4:7, which warns that the faithful should be serious in their

prayer, as the end of all things is at hand.

The entire Eucharistic prayer offers thanks to God, and

the Advent prefaces announce how grateful we are at the

coming news of our salvation this Christmas.
