Gaudete Sunday

This particular Sunday in the church year offers the biannual opportunity for the celebrant of the Mass

to wear the color rose. The other Sunday in which rose vestments are permitted is Laetare Sunday, the fourth

Sunday of Lent. The word Gaudete comes from the Latin meaning “rejoice.” The word rejoice is the first word

in the entrance antiphon for the day: “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say, rejoice. Indeed, the Lord is

near.” (Phil 4:4-5)

Throughout Advent, we have been focusing on the Lord’s coming, His coming in history two thousand

years ago and His coming again in glory, which we still await. The liturgical color has been violet, but now as

approach the last days of Advent, we have a “little rejoicing” as we realize the time for Christmas is near. We

are not there yet, but very close. The rejoicing element of this Sunday gives us a respite of sorts from the

serious, somewhat somber and penitential nature of Advent (even though Lent is the primary penitential

season of the Church year.)

We must always keep in mind that whenever we reflect upon Jesus coming into our world, lives and

hearts there is always a reason to rejoice. Sadness has no part to play here as God brings His Son into the

world for us: to show us how much we are loved. Jesus is the gift, the gift of the Father is His Son and the Son

is given to all of us. Let us then rejoice during these remaining days of Advent as we anticipate celebrating

God’s love for us in the birth of Jesus and in all that Jesus continues to do for us today!

Father David

Third Sunday of Advent – 13 December 2020 Isaiah 61:1-2a, 10-11. Luke1:46-48, 49-50, 53-54. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-24. John 1:6-8, 19-28.

Who Am I? As we long for the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, let our Advent be perfectly holy. To help us, Saint Paul reminds us of these basic Christian attitudes: (1) rejoice always, (2) pray without ceasing, and (3) always give thanks.

In whom or in what will I rejoice this week? How will I pray every day this week? For whom and for what am I thankful? What will I do because of this thanksgiving?

Needed - PC Monitors, Keyboards, Mice, Speakers

For two decades, parishioner Chuck Reiss has been refurbishing PCs for St. Elizabeth in Chicago and later for Catholic Charities in the Chicago area. He has just delivered his 300th personal computer to a Catholic Charities family to be used to access information and do remote learning. A corporation recently donated over twenty computers to this project in order to be refurbished, but they arrived without Monitors, Keyboards, Mice and PC Speakers.

If you have extra equipment laying around, please donate it so these computers may be placed in homes to help families with remote learning. Drop off is contact free in his enclosed front porch. If you have questions, contact Chuck Reiss 630-858-5381 or [email protected]

Christmas Collection for DuPage Care Center

Around this time each year, St. James the Apostle parishioners are invited to support the DuPage Care Center’s Annual Adopt-A-Resident program. This program is an opportunity for the community members, like you, to show your support to the residents and ensure their holiday wishes are met with personalized gifts. Here is how you can support this program.

Donate special items for the residents to use year-round off the Holiday Wish list. Items from this list are used to fill additional resident needs. Search Amazon for “DPCC Wishlist” or visit our website, www.dupageco.org/dpcc to view our wish list.

Gifts may be addressed to: DuPage Care Center C/O Wishlist 2020 400 N. County Farm Rd. Wheaton IL, 60187

If you have any questions, please call or email Elizabeth Walker at 630-784-4260 or [email protected].

If you do not wish to adopt a resident but would still like to contribute in some other way, monetary donations are always welcomed. Checks may be made out to the DuPage Care Center Foundation. As a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization, all contributions may be deductible to the extent allowed by the law.

Thank you for your help to make the holidays a little brighter by supporting the Adopt- A- Resident program.

Bringing Epiphany to the Children of St. John Paul II Parish

The Epiphany Toy Bag Collection for the children of St. John Paul II in Kankakee will look a little different this year. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the ladies of the St. James Council of Catholic Women will not be able to physically collect your donations of toys. However, the need is still great as St. John Paul II continues to be one of the most economically challenged parishes in the Joliet Diocese.

Because our St. James the Apostle parishioners have been so generous in the past, we are hoping to collect monetary donations only this year to enable St. John Paul II Parish to have a drive through Epiphany Celebration for the kids. They will purchase gift cards locally to support the businesses in their area.

To donate: Drop your envelope of cash or check (made payable to “St. James CCW”) marked “Epiphany Toy Bag Collection” into the Sunday Mass offering.

If you prefer, please mail your checks (made payable to “St. James CCW”) directly to Doris Barrera, 1800 Jasper Court, Wheaton, IL 60189.

Please mail your tax deductible contribution on or before December 18th.

Thank you for making a difference in the lives of those less fortunate during this difficult time. If you have any questions, please call Doris Barrera at 630-260-9276 or email [email protected]

Oplatki Now Available for Pickup at the Ministry Center

Christmas wafers, or oplatki, are now available for pickup at the Ministry Center. A $2 offering would be most appreciated. The custom of breaking a piece of wafer and sharing it with others at the Christmas dinner originated in Eastern Europe and has spread to many places in the world. You may wish to designate a family member to begin with a prayer before distributing the wafers.

The season of Advent is about anticipation. The anticipation of waiting for Christ. It also calls us to slow down a bit - that is the tough part.

• Sit with your family and talk about your traditions, talk about the history of some of the ornaments on the tree, the rich memories of family, the joy of this journey.

• Read from Scripture together out loud.

• Pray together in petition and thanksgiving.

• Be Christ for others.

Happy Gaudete Sunday! Questions? Call Gina, 630.469.7540, x208 or email [email protected]

St. James Youth Ministry Resources to Help You Create a Meaningful Advent

"The Advent season is a time of preparation that directs our hearts and minds to Christ’s second coming at the end of time and also to the anniversary of the Lord’s birth on Christmas. The final days of Advent, from December 17 to December 24, focus particularly on our preparation for the celebrations of the Nativity of our Lord (Christmas). Advent devotions including the Advent wreath, remind us of the meaning of the season. The semiannual Blood Drive took place on the Saturday after Thanksgiving (11/28/20).

Due to the pandemic, this was done via a mobile blood bank unit. We surpassed our

expected quota and received 30 pints for the local blood bank. The picture shows this mobile unit along with

Grand Knight Mike Progar (far right), Blood Drive Coordinator Kurt Padera (next to Mike), and two St.

James parishioners (Bill and Colleen Jochum) who donated blood on this day. A huge THANK YOU goes out

to all who helped make this event a very

successful one.

The annual Seminarian Raffle Book

fundraiser continues this month as an

extension to the original program has been

granted by the State Knights Council. This

event is being handled differently this year

due to the pandemic. Anyone wishing to

contribute financially to our Diocesan

seminarians can turn in their contributions

to the Ministry Center. Please include

money ($15 for each raffle book) along with

your name, address, phone number, and e-

mail when possible. The Knights will fill out

the raffle books for you, turn the completed

books in, and send you a receipt. All

donations need to be turned in no later than

Monday, December 21. The raffle drawing will be taking place in early January. Jim O’Malley has been named

December Knight of the Month for his work in putting this program together this year.

The next Knight sponsored program will take place on Sunday, December 27 when we will commemorate the

Feast of the Consecration of the Holy Family.

All the Knights in St. James the Apostle Council #9806 would like to take this opportunity to wish all the

parishioners of St. James a very Merry and Blessed Christmas and say THANK YOU for all the help you have

given us this year.

I n these unprecedented times, when so many of us are unable to gather for public worship, we may be experiencing a sense of disconnection

from our family of God at St. James.

Similarly, those of us who are able to return to public worship may feel a sense of loss and disconnection from our brothers and sisters in Christ whose faces we miss seeing gathered at the Table of the Lord each week.

Although we are physically apart at this time, the truth is we remain ONE in Christ. Therefore, in an effort to stay connected, we are happy to launch Project ONE at St. James as a safe and creative way to bridge this temporary obstacle the pandemic has ushered into our lives.

So far, Project ONE has distributed care packages to parishioners in October, November and December. Want to join in the fun for January? Be sure to sign up by the 15th of December.

Join Project ONE today! No matter your age or circumstances, any parishioner may join—it is open to all and there are three ways to participate:

1) Sign up to receive a monthly care package filled with love from your parish family. You can arrange for delivery outside your home OR pickup outside the Ministry Center.

2) Sign up to pray for a fellow parishioner and write a note of support to include in their monthly care package.

3) Sign up to deliver the Project ONE monthly care packages outside the home of a recipient.

Let us never forget we are ONE body in Christ! Sign up today to connect with your family of faith! Call 630-469-7540, ext. 205 —OR— email [email protected] —OR—visit stjamesge.org to join.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who were able to participate in our Thanks Giving weekend Blood Drive and to the St. James Knights of Columbus for providing volunteers to work this life saving event. A grand total of 30 units were collected which will assist in saving many lives especially during these difficult times. What a great gift to give to someone who has a critical need. Many lives could not be saved without your support. For those who missed us this time around, your next opportunity to donate at St. James will be the Saturday before Memorial Day. The St. James Knights of Columbus wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Thanks much!
