Parent Information Evening

School Prayer

O God, who has taught the heart of the faithful, by the light of the Holy Spirit, grant that by the gifts of the same Spirit, that we may be always truly wise and ever rejoice in his happiness. Amen

Welcome to Year One, Term One! This year your child’s learning journey will be diverse, challenging and rewarding. You will be working with talented and dedicated staff at Holy Spirit School. It has been wonderful to see how the children have enthusiastically commenced each day. They have settled in well to their start of Year One. I am looking forward to spending a wonderful and exciting year with them. The following is a summary that highlights the academic program for this coming term: Learning Areas in 2019 Religious Education Religious Education is an integral part of our daily school activity. All children in the school community are encouraged to develop to their full potential and their special qualities, in an environment that is centred on Christian values. Religious Education is taught as a subject and is the underlying principle of our Christian faith. Catholic schools follow the W.A Catholic Education guidelines. Our religious guidelines for this term are as follows:

Loving Others – (Jesus) This Religious Education unit introduces the children to the many ways they use their bodies, including their senses. The children will be invited to wonder about their bodies and wonder about God, who created the human body and that God loves each and every one of them. The children will be introduced to the ways Jesus showed his love for all people, including those who were sick and who had disabilities. Finally, the unit explores ways in which the children can use their bodies to show love.

Growing and Changing – (Eucharist) This Religious Education unit will explore God who represents love and Christian life. These are gifts from God. Jesus gave his friends the Eucharist, to help them say thank you, to all God’s gifts, including the gift of life. Jesus wants us to use these gifts he gave us to care for others.

A Special Holy Time – (Lent/ Easter) This Religious Education unit begins with wondering about the human experience of new life and what it brings. The unit explores how Jesus’ story teaches people about new life and how to love, share and care for others. Jesus’ death and Resurrection teaches us his followers, about God’s love and that Jesus was raised to a new life. Ash Wednesday Mass: 6th March at 9am in the Church Year One Liturgy: 4th April at 9am in the Church

English The English Curriculum is built around the three interrelated strands, Language, Literature and Literacy. Together the three strands, focus on developing students’ knowledge, understanding and skills in listening, reading, viewing, speaking, writing and creating. Spelling The whole school uses the resource called Sound Waves to support our spelling program. Sound Waves is a word study program, designed to develop reading, spelling and writing skills through phonemic awareness. Phonemic awareness is the knowledge and understanding of sounds in our language. The Sound Waves program also includes activities on grammar, prefixes and suffixes. - Explore phonemes: smallest unit of sound in a word. - Identify graphemes: the letter or letter combinations used to represent the sound. - Develop awareness of spelling patterns - Segment words into their component sounds - Relationship between letters, sounds and words

Grammar Grammar provides the building blocks for children to understand and express themselves. When children increase their language complexity (with word endings, or longer/more complex sentences), they can express and understand more complicated ideas. Grammar features within both our spoken and written communication and allows us to have our messages clearly understood. Writing The children will be involved in a variety of writing activities, to develop early literacy skills.

The iMaths investigations and tasks build and develop the student’s understanding of the maths concepts. It will also improve their mathematical fluency and problem solving skills. The text also provides real-life contexts, in which the children can develop higher-order reasoning. The three content strands in Mathematics include: Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry and Statistics and Probability. Mathematics guidelines for this term in Number and Algebra, will include:

Science Primary Connections provides an inquiry based approach. This helps students develop their learning of Science and guides them to find scientific ways to answer their Science investigations. It is based on an inquiry orientated teaching and learning model. Students use their prior knowledge to develop explanations for their hands-on experiences of scientific phenomena. They will be actively engaged in the learning process. Students develop scientific investigations skills and an understanding of the nature of science.

Teaching and learning progresses through five phases: Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate and Evaluate. These five phases of the Primary Connections teaching and learning model are based on the 5Es instructional model (Bybee, 1997). Physical Science: Look and Listen This unit provides opportunities to investigate sources of light and sound. We will investigate how they are produced and how light and sound travel. Students’ will understand the role of light and sound in our lives and our community. They will learn this through hands on activities. Golden Tickets At Holy Spirit School, we believe that in focusing on positive behaviours, children will be empowered with the ability to accept responsibility for their own actions. The school introduced a school system where children are rewarded with a ‘Golden Ticket.’ They achieve this when they display; Christian values, positive social skills, good manners and follow the school rules. The ‘Golden Tickets’ will come home for parents to sign and celebrate their child’s positive behaviour. Homework Bags * Please ensure the homework bag comes to school each day and comes home each night. * Please check your child’s homework bag each day. Messages and notes will be in their homework bag. * Please encourage your child to keep the homework book in the homework bag. * Ensure your child brings this homework book to school every Monday to glue in the news plan sheet. * Homework items are given every Monday.

8 | P a g e

Homework Policy Students in Year One will receive approximately 15 minutes homework each night. All homework is designed to: * Deepen the students learning and understanding of a particular concept. * Foster independent study and develop time management. * Develop organizational habits and skills for later education. Homework in Year One will commence in week 3. Term One homework will consist of the following: 1. Home Reading Oral reading each night to improve fluency and comprehension skills. Children will be given home reading books each Monday to read over the week. Children are encouraged to read their books more than once throughout the week. Parents are requested to sign their child’s reading log. Reading logs are checked every Monday when the reading books are changed. Please return reading books to school every MONDAY for book change. 2. Sight Words Sight words (high frequency words) are commonly used words that young children are encouraged to memorize as a whole by sight, so that they can automatically recognise these words in print without having to use any strategies to decode. Sight words will be given every Monday, these words need to be practiced daily. Sight words account for a large percentage of the words used in beginning children's print materials. The advantage for children being able to recognize sight words automatically is that a beginning reader will be able to identify the majority of words in a beginning text before they even attempt to read it. This allows the child to concentrate on the meaning and comprehension without having to stop and decode every single word. Recognising sight words automatically is said to be advantageous for beginning readers. 3. Class News The children will be involved in re-telling events and experiences with their peers. This will enable the children to retell, explain and share news. (News on even weeks 2, 4, 6, 8, 10). Please help your child complete the news planning sheet in the homework book and bring the homework book to school on your child’s news day.

Communication Between Parent/Teacher If there is an issue you would like to discuss, such as your child’s progress, please come and see me personally. You are welcome to come and see me in the morning before school 8:00-8:30am or in the afternoon after school from 3:10pm. If the matter is urgent please see me in the morning. Communication is best spoken face to face. However, should you wish to contact me by email, please send brief emails to: [email protected] If it is an important and lengthy matter, please make an appointment to see me, either before school or after school. Parent/teacher meetings are an important means of discussing your child’s progress. This is the most effective way to discuss any concerns you may have. As I am unable to read emails during the day, please send urgent communication / absentees emails to Mary. Please be advised that emails can be unreliable for immediate attention, due to teaching requirements, recess or lunch duties and other meeting commitments.

Alternatively, if you wish you are also welcome to write me a note and place it on the desk, to inform me of an event during the day, request a meeting, or to explain that your child will be leaving early/coming late to school. Classroom Organisation Each child is required to maintain a tidy desk and the surrounding area. They are also required to be responsible for their homework and materials needed each day. Reminders maybe needed to help your child achieve these requirements. By allowing your child to take responsibility for these daily activities, you are helping to foster their independence. Before the bell goes each morning, the children are expected to follow a ‘Morning Routine’ which is on a chart in the classroom. Absentees If your child is absent from school please email Mary in administration or complete a student absence notification form. They are available at the back of classroom. Icy Pole Friday If you wish for your child to have an icy pole on Friday please bring $1 to school in your child’s school bag. (Please place the money in the zip pocket in the school bag). Banking Every Wednesday is Commonwealth Banking Day. Please ensure your child bring his or her bank book on this day. Kiss and Drive Parents are to pull up to the first available yellow bay in the kiss and drive. This is a constantly moving line of traffic. As each car leaves the kiss and drive zone, all vehicles move forward slowly and carefully to the yellow pick up zone. Please minimise big gaps between cars and keep alert for children crossing at all times. Absences If your child is away, please inform Mary at the front office. For legal purposes, it is a requirement that we have either an email or note upon your child’s return to school for the period that your child was absent from school and the reason. Allergy Aware Anaphylaxis is a severe, rapidly progressive allergic reaction that is potentially life threatening. The school has a number of students with allergies to various foods. For this reason, the school is promoting being ‘Nut Aware/Allergy Aware’. Children are not to share food with anyone and should wash their hands before and after eating, your support with this important issue is greatly appreciated. Accidents/Injuries Should your child be involved in an accident at school which warrants medical attention, parents or the nominated emergency contact person will be contacted at home or work. In the event that immediate attention is required, a staff member will access the appropriate medical support and the parent is contacted as soon as possible. It is Holy Spirit School policy that a parent is contacted if children receive a knock to the head, even if no apparent injury has been sustained. Holding Hands – Child Protection Curriculum In Term 3, all students participate in the Holding Hands Protective Behaviour program. Protective Behaviours is an internationally acclaimed personal safety and child abuse prevention program endorsed by the Department of Education in Western Australia. The program is based on two themes; “We all have the right to feel safe at all times” and “We can talk with someone about anything no matter what it is”. I look forward to working with all the Year One parents and their children this year.

Kind regards
