What We Learn at Table—a reflection by Mary Stommes, editor of Give us This Day
“You’re all so good to me,” Mom would say in wonder as her health declined and she relied more
and more on our care.
“We learned that from you,” we'd affectionately reply. In other words, “As you have done, so we
must do.” We knew no other way than to return all the good she had done for us. It was a privilege.
That’s the way of love. What goes around tends to come around, making us wondrously dizzy in
the reciprocal giving and receiving. Dizzy in love, head-over-heels in love. Yet so, so steady and purposeful.
So ordinary and down-to-earth...like God’s love for us in Jesus.
Like the Eucharist.
“Jesus loved his own in the world and he loved them to the end,” John says at the beginning of his
Last Supper narrative. Jesus is crazy in love with his own. So much so that he gets up from the table...and
astonishingly, washes their feet. Quite the shift from lofty to lowly. “How to I love thee? Let me count your
toes…” Not to slip into silliness on this most solemn night, but where in the world was the Master Teacher
going with this “hands-on-feet” lesson?
“Where in the world?” It’s exactly the question that Christ asks us on this night and in every Eucha-
rist. Where in the world—and to whom– will you go with all my goodness and love?
It is a gift and a privilege to humbly serve others. In that sacred space of giving and receiving, we
encounter the Christ we long for, the communion with God and each other that we desire.
That’s the way it is with Eucharistic love. We learn it from Jesus.
Parents: We wish your family a blessed Holy Week and Easter. Please consider sharing the beautiful liturgi-
cal services on Holy Thursday, Good Friday, the Easter Vigil on Saturday, in addition to Easter Sunday Mass,
with your children. It is through your teaching and example as their “first teachers of the faith” that their
love of God and our faith takes root. The times for all services are listed on the next page of this newslet-
ter.
Thank you, as well, for your understanding as the teachers prepare to attend the National Catholic Educa-
tion Association’s convention in St. Louis. This one-of-a-kind event brings together Catholic and other reli-
gious educators to exchange ideas and debut cutting-edge research and technologies related to education.
With approx. 100 sessions a day to choose from, the teachers are finding it hard to choose just one thing to
attend every 1.5 hours! They will be offered courses in educational trends, faith integration, instructional
strategies/resources, 21st century learners, Catholic social justice, classroom culture, exceptional learners,
inquiry based learning, student faith formation, technology, & information from the Catholic Library Associ-
ation, just to name a few. They will come back refreshed, renewed, and ready to implement what they
have learned not only in the last few weeks of school but in the years to come.
Peace, Michele Watson

Joe Clune Scholar Athlete Award
At this year’s eighth grade graduation ceremony, the Holy Spirit Athletic Association will present the Joe Clune Scholar Athlete Award to the top male and female student athlete.
This award is very special to the Association and Carol Clune. As coaches and parents of these scholar athletes, your participation is very crucial to the continued success of this
award. The selection committee requests your participation by nominating up to two fe-male and two male candidates for this award. We have placed nomination forms in the
school office for you to use.
Again, this year we are not allowing “student solicited nominations”. This is specifically identified in the Selection Guidelines. Parents do have the option to obtain forms in the
school office and make their own nominations.
Your nominations are very important to the selection committee. We respectfully request each of you to take the time to submit your nominations with as much detail as possible. Again, you may nominate up to two female and two male candidates. Please return the
completed forms to the Holy Spirit Athletic Association in care of Mary Jacobs, or by email at [email protected]. We ask that all nominations be returned no later than May
4th. If you have any questions, please contact Mary Jacobs.
On behalf of the Association and Carol Clune, thank you for participating in this important event.
Sincerely,
Chuck Weinhardt
Holy Spirit Athletic Director
