Please Pray for our sick
A few years ago, I attended a wedding in New York at St. Demitria Church, a Greek Orthodox Church.
The Greek Orthodox Church separated from the Roman Catholic Church back in 1054. They still have a valid Priesthood and valid Sacraments, but they are considered to be in schism because they offer their obedience, not to the Pope but to one of five Patriarchs located in Rome, Alexandria, Antioch, Constantinople and Jerusalem or to one of the heads of other churches in the East such as Russia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria or Georgia.
By attending this wedding and speaking to the Priest who presided, I found many things that differ from the liturgy and tradition of our Roman Catholic Church.
For example, their Priests marry and in fact must be married before Ordination! This will never happen in the Roman Catholic Church because we now have 1000 years of experience showing that Priests are of greater service to the people when they’re not responsible for a wife and kids.
Another big difference is they don’t offer daily Mass!
So the Parishioners only gather on Sunday! And when the Priest takes his one month vacation, the people have no Sunday Mass offered during the weeks that he is away!
And probably the biggest surprise for me was the fact that the Blessed Sacrament was not reserved in the Church! We’re used to having Our Lord present in the Tabernacle in
every Catholic Church we enter … but their churches don’t
have a Tabernacle and therefore no Jesus!
You see, the Greek Orthodox Church uses little cubes of bread instead of the unleavened bread hosts we use. And they add the cubes of bread to the wine after consecration.
Holy Communion is then distributed on a long spoon where the person tips their head way back and the Priest spoons one cube of bread saturated with wine into their mouth.
While our dry, unleavened hosts can be stored in the Tabernacle, this is not possible with bread soaked in wine, which means that all elements consecrated at each Mass must be consumed at Mass, leaving nothing to put in a Tabernacle.
Recognize how blessed we are with the practice of distributing the elements of bread and wine separately ... so extra hosts can be reserved in the Tabernacle, leaving us the true presence of Jesus for adoration and for the sick!
So, come to daily Mass or make a daily visit to Church where you can worship Jesus and feed on Jesus every day.
Happy Feast of Corpus Christi!
Love, Father Deering
