As poor as they are, they will be cooking pupusas and tamales, and drinking beer because their hero Archbishop Oscar Romero is to be beati- fied. Many people were martyred in El Salvador during the war, including six Jesuits at the University, Maryknoll missionary sisters and, of course, Salvadoreans who opposed the brutal military regime, but it was the ruthless killing of Oscar Romero, who was shot while he was say- ing Mass, that traumatised the people. He was committed to the plight of the poor and one of the few who spoke up against the killings and endless human rights abuses with passion and cour- age that enraged his enemies. Knowing that he would be assassinated he said shortly before he died that he would live on in the lives of the poor. He certainly does that. When I visited El Salvador in 1996 I saw graffiti that already hailed him as San Romero: canonisation from Rome was not necessary in their eyes. However, the wheels in Rome turn slow- ly, understandably, and Oscar Romero is at last on his way to being acknowledged as a saint. May his example of defending human rights and support of the poor and oppressed be part of our lives too. Kathy Doust 1917-1980 KATHLEEN GILL RIP Please pray for the repose of the soul of Kathleen Gillwho died recently. Her Requiem Mass will be on Thursday 27th May 10.45am at The Holy Spirit. OSCAR ROMERO- BEATIFICATION On Sunday 24 May I am sure the campesinos in the village of Puenticitos in El Salvador which this parish supports will be partying. Proclaim 15

A chance to come together as a Parish

Proclaim 15 is an initiative that the Bishops in England

and Wales have produced for parishes. It’s aim is to

support and encourage us in our lives as Christians. The

Bishops have been inspired by Pope Francis who said

“I wish to encourage the Christian faithful to embark upon

a new chapter of evangelisation marked by this joy, while

pointing out new paths for the Church’s journey in years to

    come.”

There will be a Conference in Birmingham in July which

our Parish representatives will be attending. However

before then , we have been encouraged to look at some of

the topics that have proposed by the Bishops.

    Proclaim 15- Parish Sessions

You all are invited to come hear and talk about three topics that were recently proposed by our Bishops’ Conference and that parishes have been encouraged to look at with their parishioners. The topics are: Meeting Jesus, Learning to be a Missionary Disciple, and Jesus is alive.

The dates for these sessions will be ; Tuesday evenings from 8pm -9.30pm in the hall of the Parish Social Centre, on 16 June, 23 June and 30th June. Evening drinks and nibbles will also be available Friday lunchtimes from 12 Noon– 1.30pm upstairs in the Parish Social Centre, 0n 19th June, 26 June and 3 July. Lunch will be provided. If any parishioners would also like to help with these

sessions, please contact Mary Elliot Smith. Tel: 914 9473. On the evening of Saturday 11 July, the Bishops have

requested that we pray together as a parish for the work of

evangelisation. It would be a great help if you could pray

that the Bishops’ programme is fruitful. Thank you.

    PLEASE PRAY FOR BURUNDI

“You have probable seen on TV news brief reports of renewed conflict in Burundi. We do not know if Father Emmanuel and his

staff and students at the training college in Bujumbura has been

affected. Could pray for their safety and the continuation of their

valuable work with the young people of Burundi?”
