Nottingham Citizens Homelessness Team:
Homelessness is a scandal, and one that is sadly on the increase. Rough sleeping is up 30% nationally and 50% in Nottingham, prompting the establishment of the Nottingham Citizens Homelessness Team. Initial research has revealed that (unsurprisingly) much of the increase in homelessness is due to changes in central government policy since 2010. However, there are things that we can do locally.
These include: 1. Ensuring the terms of the Care Act are fully implemented so that all homeless people have their needs properly assessed. 2. Stopping people being discharged from hospital or prison to no fixed abode. 3. Securing agreements between local councils to promote better cooperation (with each other and with the voluntary sector) to ensure no homeless person ends up as 'no one's responsibility'. 4. Encouraging local businesses to support those working with homeless people in the voluntary sector. In order to make headway in these various areas we need to welcome new faces onto our team.
Whether you have experience and insight into the homelessness sector, or are simply willing to give some time to the next phase of research and action, we'd love to hear from you!
