From the Pastor’s Desk… The miracle story and the theme of today’s Gospel should be fairly familiar to everyone. It was indeed miraculous that in spite of meager resources at hand, Jesus was able to satisfy the physical hunger of thousands of men (and women and children) far removed from any village or source of provisions.
Dig down a little deeper, however, into the story line itself. His disciples, to no surprise, did not bring adequate food for such a large crowd. In fact, the disciples beg Jesus to send the crowds away and let them take care of themselves. Their response, in many ways, should sound familiar to us, i.e., let people take care of themselves, when there is obvious need.
People today, ourselves included, attempt in so many ways to try to satisfy the wants and needs of others. Oftentimes, however, reliance on human ideas and intuition fail. We mistakenly think that satisfaction – or contentment – are to be found in excessive material goods. Sometimes, people believe that happiness can be found in indulging others with excessive attention and doting on them. Many hope that contentment can be found in personal popularity, good looks or beautiful wardrobes, or the perfect home in the right location.
I believe the point of this Gospel today is that when we rely on Jesus Christ for the fulfillment and satisfaction of our true and deepest needs, only then do we discover inner peace and contentment. When Jesus Christ fulfills our needs, He provides all we need in excess. There is an over abundance to share with others.
Some hope that strong leaders or personalities in our day – which many feel are lacking – are the answer to our discontent or unease. We should turn to Jesus Christ, His Gospel, and the promise that He is with us until the end of time for hope, contentment, and inner satisfaction. So many, even people of faith, have tried everything else. Yet, so many believe something is still lacking. Rely on God and our relationship with Him.
Have a good week, Fr. Bill Arnold
An Important Anniversary – August 6, 1945. Thursday is the 75th anniversary of the first atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, Japan, at the end of the Second World War. The second followed on August 9, 1945, as a bomb was dropped on the city of Nagasaki. The loss of human life was enormous and horrifying. Please say a prayer for peace. The human cost, in lives and suffering, of any future nuclear attack must deter all world leaders, including our own, as they bear responsibility for the future of all humanity.

Scott G. Belton, age 70, a parishioner of Holy Spirit and product of our parish RCIA program, died Wednesday, July 22, 2020, at Select Specialty Hospital in Thurber Village. He died as a result of a tragic incident on the street in front of his home. Scott served on Parish Council and was a Lector at Mass. The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated for him this past Wednesday, July 29th, here at Holy Spirit Parish. Burial followed at Franklin Hills Cemetery near Canal Winchester. Please keep Scott’s wife, Carol, his daughters, and entire family in your prayers. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
We welcome these new members to our Holy Spirit Parish family, who were baptized last weekend here at Holy Spirit.

• You are asked to wear a mask. If you don’t have one, one will be provided.
• Sanitize your hands upon entering Church.• You will be directed to a pew. Assigned seating.• No moving around during Mass.• Hymn books have been removed from the Church.• No one will be admitted late.• Mass to last no longer than 45 minutes.• Envelopes may be placed in a basket as you exit.• At end of Mass, an orderly dismissal.• Use hand sanitizer when leaving Church.• Please, no conversation/socializing inside Church.
The Church in Latin America: This weekend is the special collection for the Church in Latin America. Your donations support evangelization and missionary efforts in Latin America and the Caribbean. To learn more, please visit www.usccb.org/latin-america. There is an envelope for this collection in your packet.
Daily Mass Opportunities: Mass is celebrated on Wednesday and Friday mornings in Holy Spirit Church (not the Day Chapel) at 9:00 a.m. There is also a Mass celebrated every Thursday morning at 9:00 a.m. at St. Philip the Apostle Church. There are seldom more than 10-12 people at a daily Mass. We keep social distance, wear a mask, and use hand sanitizer. This is, for the summer, a good alternative to coming to a more crowded weekend Mass, if that is a concern to you.
Please remember in your prayers all the sick, homebound and/or recovering from St. Philip and Holy Spirit Parishes, especially Ed Bracken, Robert & Lu Cudak, Christine Krites, MaryLou Pelzer, and Lisa Rundag, and for those in our parishes coping with physical and mental conditions.
MISSION APPEAL Every parish in the Diocese annually hosts a representative from a mission order of the Church. In light of the global pandemic, these appeals are being featured digitally. All mission workers depend on the support of all of us to make their missionary work possible.
SOLT is a Catholic missionary community – Society of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity – serving in areas of deepest apostolic need. Because of this charism, our missions serve low income people or remote areas of the world. These missions are located in the US, Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, China, Thailand and Australia. Some of these missions have very little income to support. We are grateful for the help of generous benefactors to make them fruitful.
To donate online, go to www.MISSIO.org. You must enter “Holy Spirit & St. Philip Churches” in the search field. You may place your contributions in the box in the front of Church, drop off at the office, or mail in a donation. Please mark the donation “for Mission Appeal.”
Reflection on Matthew 12:1-8:
Jesus reprimands the Pharisees, who noticed the disciples picking grain to eat on the Sabbath. Jesus told the Pharisees: “If you knew what this meant, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned these innocent men.”
Every saint had a past and every sinner has a future. That is the key to Catholic spirituality. In the lives of every one of these heroes of the faith, there is some conversion. And every sinner – every one of us – has a future. That is why we soak in the mercy of God.
There is a beautiful reference in the Psalms to oil running down upon your beard, upon the collar of your robe. The divine mercy is like that: poured out upon us, poured out without reservation – and not because it’s earned, because it can’t be earned.
God doesn’t love us because we’re worthy. We’re worthy because He loves us. We don’t deserve His mercy, but we soak it in and are thereby transformed.
Bishop Robert Barron
Open Wide Our HeartsU.S. Bishops’ Pastoral on Racism
St. Paul teaches us that all people are united together through the love and life of Jesus Christ. He uses the image of the body to express how people can be united even if they are different from one another.
St. Paul calls us to celebrate the differences between the different members of the Body of Christ. Just as a body needs an ear, an arm, and every other part to be whole, the Church, as the Body of Christ, needs every one of its diverse members to be whole. We must ensure the well-being of each of its parts.
Racism manifests itself in our thoughts, attitudes, actions, and inactions, as well as in social structures and unjust systems that perpetuate centuries of racial injustice. We are called to share the suffering of our sisters and brothers in Christ who have been wounded by the evil of racism. We must examine our participation in racism through our thoughts, attitudes, actions and inactions:
1. Have I fully loved God and fully loved my neighbor as myself?
2. Have I caused pain to others by my actions or my words that offended my brother or sister?
3. Have I done enough to inform myself about the evil of racism?
4. Is there a root of racism within me that blurs my vision of who my neighbor is? 5. Have I ever witnessed an occasion when someone experienced racism and I did or said nothing?
6. Have I ever been in a situation when someone experienced racism – and I helped to cause their pain and embarrassment?
7. Have I ever supported or aided a person who experienced racism and paid a price for it? How did I react?
8. How am I called to respond to the evil of racism?
From U.S. Catholic Bishops, “Open Wide Our Hearts” Pastoral Letter Against Racism.
