St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church 2308 3rd Street ∙ Huffman TX 77336 November 26, 2017 - Feast of Christ the King Spirit and Truth A True King My dear parishioners, a true king does not hand over his life as an acvity of perverse vanity, nor does he sacrifice himself that his people may sprawl upon beds of ivory and sing idle songs. [cf. Amos 6:4-6] Jesus Christ fulfills what is expected of a king. He chooses to leave Nazareth, his boy- hood home, and the village of his clan, to rescue his people from spiritual collapse and dread of the future. Forsaking the com- fort and security of his mothers home, he sets out on foot to preach and teach every- where, to heal and perform miracles in the lives of countless poor persons in desperate need. He draws them to himself as a moth- er hen gathers her chicks. [cf. Mt 23:37] Jesus of Nazareth feeds his followers with bread and the Good News of his heavenly fathers kingdom. He washes their feet. Those who accept his divine friendship, he saves. Long aſter his disciples succumb to sleep, Jesus keeps watch at night in prayer. By the sweat of his own back, Jesus carries the cross upon which he will suffer crucifixion for the sake of the world. He offers himself as the Messiah to free mankind from its slavery to sin and death. A true king, one who lays down his life for those he serves, possesses authority. His subjects follow his example. They will go where he leads, but not out of fear. So what actually is authority? What makes it different from power? Simply ex- pressed, power is the direct or indirect use of force. Authority, however, is lead- ing and guiding people without coercion. Meet Our Catechists Confirmation Journey

Dear St. Philip’s family, Our Con-

firmandi have been learning

about our seven Holy Sacraments

in depth. We have learned about

the three “initiation” Sacraments

of Baptism, Confirmation and Ho-

ly Eucharist. These three Sacra-

ments fully initiate us into the Ho-

ly Mother Church. It is through these sacred Sacra-

ments that we are fully vested in the Catholic faith.

There were many questions about being baptized out-

side of the Catholic Church. Are these baptisms ac-

cepted? What is required for a baptism? The Catholic

Church recognizes and accepts baptism conferred by

other Christian religions as long as the Holy Trinity is

called upon and water is used as a symbol of washing

away original sin. Catholic priests and deacons seal

the baptized with holy Chrism oil as a symbol of gifting

the Holy Spirit’s gifts and fruits. These are guideposts

for our lives as Christians.

The Sacrament of Confirmation perfects Baptism. The

Confirmand is blessed, sealed with the holy Chrism and

the Bishop lays his hands on the head of the Confirm-

and. These three acts perfect our baptism and renew

our lives as children of God. This Sacrament reinforces

our baptism by calling the Holy Spirit to live in our

souls. This is a conscience choice and one made after

much prayer and discernment.

It was pointed out that the only Sacraments to use ho-

ly oils and laying on of hands are Baptism, Confirma-

tion and Holy Orders. These three Sacraments are life

changing and life affirming. It is through the Holy Spirit

that these three Sacraments are sealed within us and

offer us the gifts and fruits to live by.

Please continue to pray for the Confirmandi, teaching

team and youth mentors as we journey to the Sacra-

ment of Confirmation.

Sincerely in the Hearts of Jesus and Mary,

Lynette Zaunbrecher

Confirmation Coordinator

Hello, my name is Maribel

Alvarez, I am co-teacher for

3rd grade alongside Mrs. Car-

lie Richard in CCE this year. I

am so excited to be a part of

this journey in learning

about our amazing Catholic

faith.

I would like to tell you a little about myself. I

was born here in Texas in a small town named

Nocona, close to the border with Oklahoma. I

have lived in quite a few states in the east, my

favorites being Tennessee and Florida. My

choices in life brought me back to Texas, more

specifically to Austin where I met my husband,

Rogelio Alvarez, 17 yrs. ago and we created our

little family. We have 3 kids; Elizabeth, 15 who

is in 10th grade, Tanya, 13 in 8th grade and

Christopher, 9 in 4th grade.

We moved to Huffman in 2012 and happy with

our decision to move here. When we first

attended St. Philip, I in particular felt a strong

presence of peace during Mass. I felt like I final-

ly found God speaking to me. This is the parish

where I could find my answers that I have been

seeking throughout my life. My family of course

felt the same way, that we were home, so we

became a part of St. Philip and have been so

blessed ever since. This is my second year as a

Life Skills Aide for Copeland Elementary, my

husband works in remodeling and my girls

aside from school, are active in volunteering in

our parish and community.

When asked if I would join our wonderful CCE

team, I felt it in my heart and knew my answer

was a YES. And I have been loving it ever since.

I’m excited to have the opportunity to guide

our children of St. Philip on their continuing

discovery of our catholic faith.

Yours Truly,

Maribel Alvarez

Congratulations on Your First Reconciliation!

No Youth Group Activities for December

We have had to change the Middle and High School Youth Group’s calendars for December. We will not have a December activity for either group. Due to the logistical problems with having a giving tree at The Overlook as well as the many struggles so many of our parishioners are still facing as a result of the flood, we will skip our traditional trip to Pine Shadows Nursing Home this year. Sometimes a break can be good for us; it can give us a chance to miss something and realize its value to us. After a year off from some of our usual ac-tivities, we may find we approach them with re-newed enthusiasm and vigor next year. Stay tuned to this space for more information on our January activities. Specifics will be coming soon.

Congratulations on Your First Reconciliation Mikey Holland Kayla Duarte

Mikey and Kayla are teens who received the Sacra-ment of Reconciliation for the first time during CCE last week. Father Barker joined us on Wednesday November 15 at AUMC where we set up our travel-ing confessional screen in one of their preschool rooms. When David Zaunbrecher built the screen for our Confirmation retreats, we never dreamed it would come in so handy after a flood. After Mikey and Kayla, Father stayed to hear confes-sions for our Confirmation class. He also took the time to visit with each of our classes. It’s always a special night when Father comes to visit.

Sunday (K – 5th Grade): December 17 – Class

December 24 and 31 – No Class January 7 – Classes Resume

Wednesday (6th – Confirmation):

December 13 - Class December 20 and 27 – No Class

January 3 – Classes Resume

CCE Christmas Schedule

Grief Ministry Getting Through the Holidays

What Do You Mean, I’m Supposed to Evangelize?

As Catholics, we are all called to evangelize oth-ers. Are there any scarier words to a lot of us? It seems a daunting task. Are we supposed to walk up to strangers on the street and ask them to come to Mass with us? Should I invite my Protestant friends over for coffee and a discussion on why they’re not giving our Blessed Mother Mary enough attention? The good news is that no, you don’t need to do these things. First and foremost, a good evange-lizer loves other people. We need to enter into real relationships with people first, get to know their stories. We need to be ready to meet peo-ple where they are in their faith and show them love and mercy right there. We don’t have to agree with people on issues to be able to try to understand what has led them to that belief. After we understand where they are coming from, we can enter into a productive dis-cussion with them that could lead to a change of heart. Let people see the joy you have because of your love for God. That kind of joy is contagious; people will want to gain it for themselves. Only after you have gained their trust will people allow you to lead them to Christ. Being an effective evangelist, bringing people to God, is challenging, but we get better at it the more we try and the more we love.

Having lost a loved one, the holidays will never be the same. That’s a fact!---but there are ways to cope that will help. Some family rituals may hold too much pain to complete during the first several years after a loss. This is the time to consider trying something new. Several individuals I have worked with felt that it was too much of a chore to decorate for the holidays. Sev-eral years on now, they are, indeed, decorating and carrying on in memory of their loved one. We all get trapped in what we are “supposed” to do or “ought to do”. Don’t feel obligated to decorate, bake, entertain, send cards, etc. unless you find joy in doing any of these. Don’t overextend yourself during the holidays. Be cautious about what you agree to take on as you may become overwhelmed and unable to complete commitments. Take it easy. Your family and loved ones will understand. The first Christmas after my husband died, the kids took over and it was good to be somewhere else but home over that holiday. He was there with us, how-ever, as the children talked to their children about their “Paw Paw’s” love of Christmas and his great culi-nary skills. In the past 15 years, we have established new rituals. I started putting up a Christmas tree again after the second anniversary of his death as I remembered how he loved that ritual and it was fun to see the grandchildren’s delight. Sometimes old holiday rituals are comforting after a death and some-times they are not. Continue them only if they feel good to you. May your holidays be filled with love, laughter, and fond memories.

Mary’s Blessings Ministry Huffman Food Bank

Adult Bible Study

Since St. Philip is unable to sponsor a food drive this year, we encourage you to drop by the Huffman Food Pantry with your food and financial donations for those who may not be able to have a Happy Thanksgiving due to Hurricane Harvey or other cir-cumstances. The Huffman Food Pantry is located at 25503 FM 2100 on the campus of the First Baptist Church. They are open on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 9-12 noon. For several weeks after the storm they operated a relief center for anyone who was flooded in Huff-man. They provided shelter, hot meals, showers, clothing and shelter for horses and pets. Please show your appreciation for their humanitarian efforts by helping to restock the Pantry.

We will spend the next session studying “Beginning Apologetics—How to Explain and Defend the Catho-lic Faith”. We will be meeting on Monday, Decem-ber 11th, at the May Center in Huffman at 6:00 pm. We will be discussing Purgatory. If you have not attended any of our sessions, please feel free to join us. For more information, contact Ray & Deb Kessler at 832-644-8078 or email to [email protected]. All are welcome!

O God of all the nations, the One God who is and was and always will be, in your providence you willed that your Church be united to the suffering of your Son. Look with mercy on your servants who are persecuted for their faith in you. Grant them perseverance and courage to be worthy imitators of Christ. Bring your wisdom upon leaders of nations to work for peace among all peoples. May your Spirit open conversion for those who contradict your will, that we may live in harmony. Give us the grace to be united in truth and freedom, and to al-ways seek your will in our lives. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. Our Lady, Queen of Peace, pray for us. BE OPEN TO CORRECTIONS AND LISTEN TO THE ADVICE OF LITTLE ONES Littleness will teach you to accept your mistakes and those who assist you to remedy them. • Intelligent people are often humble and re-

spond graciously to corrections. • Little ones seldom offer advice—earn their con-

fidence by humbling yourself and becoming one of them.

• Little ones practice the lesson they preach. • Little ones feel lifted and invigorated to serve

the Lord in holiness and peace.

Steps in Littleness

“There are 50 simple steps in littleness. Try them one step at a time. Look at your struggles and temp-tations. You will find one step that will suit you the most at that stage in your life. Do not hurry – re-member you’re little!” - Fr. Santan Pinto SOLT

A True King (from page 1)

… Jesus uses authority -- the fidelity of his own faith-ful example -- in ways that glorify its true source who is God. Jesus shuns power. He doesn’t seek his own glory. With pure intentions, he fulfills God’s will for one purpose only: to glorify his loving heavenly father. Jesus is true to himself by being true to the one who sent him. Facing the battle-hardened and cruel Pontius Pilate, Jesus professes: “For this I was born, and for this I have come into the world, to bear witness to the truth. Every one who is of the truth hears my voice." [Jn 18:29-37] Jesus, the Messiah, proclaims "good news of a great joy" [Lk 2:10] to all who suffer affliction, healing broken hearts, freeing pris-oners and liberating the enslaved.

All persons who hear the Gospel will stand -- as did the unwitting Roman governor -- on the battlefield where the principalities of light and darkness collide. And each must choose which kingdom he will serve: Christ the King -- the Light of the World -- or the evil gods of power and sensuality that grow stronger in human society by the day. Perhaps we are consoled most by the fact that Christ the King favored the poor in spirit and the physically impoverished. He unconditionally loved the spiritual-ly exhausted, the grieving, the meek, the downtrod-den, and the persecuted. He blesses us in the midst of our circumstances. Learn his teachings. Imitate his example. Follow him. In the knowledge that your salvation was purchased at a great price [cf. 1Cor 6:20], I give you the joy of Christ the King and the new liturgical Year of Grace, anno domini 2018! Sincerely in the hearts of Jesus and Mary. Your pastor, Reverend Richard Barker.

When you receive Communion during the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, it is the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Christ that you are receiving. Holy Communion, in the Catholic Church, is reserved for those who have received the sacrament of First Holy Communion, have been catechized (taught) in our Catholic faith and have made a profession of faith. One should abstain from Holy Communion if they are in mortal sin and have not received the sacrament of reconciliation. If you are not Roman Catholic or are in need of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, we ask that you refrain from receiving Holy Communion in the Mass. However, you may go up to one of the ministers for a blessing when Holy Communion is being offered. By crossing your hands over your heart, the Priest or Eucharistic minister will know to give you the blessing.

Also, if you choose to receive only the Blessed Sacrament and not from the Chalice, it is fitting nevertheless to pause for a mo-ment to honor Christ’s pres-ence in the Precious Blood—with an appropriate sign of de-votion. We would not think to pass a friend on the street with-out some acknowledgement. Our Lord Jesus Christ deserves no less, and most assuredly, a great deal more.
