January 3, 2021 The Epiphany of the Lord

Prayer of the Faithful God's arms are opened wide in welcome to all who seek salvation. Let us bring to God the needs of all the world.

For Christians throughout the world as they work to manifest God's love in the midst of hardship, apathy,

and persecution, let us pray to the Lord. For all the nations of the world, the richest and the

poorest, to learn work together for the common good of all people, especially during this time of the pandemic,

let us pray to the Lord. For those who earnestly seek for signs of God's

movement in their lives, and for our community to encourage and welcome them, let us pray to the Lord. For those who study the stars of the universe or the

microbes on the Earth, or in other ways seek to unlock the secrets of God's creation for the benefit of all

humanity, especially those working for treatments and vaccines for COVID-19, let us pray to the Lord.

For all newborn children, signs of hope for the world, and for their parents and families, let us pray to the Lord.

For all those who are sick, for all who suffer from COVID-19, and for all who have died,

let us pray to the Lord. For all the prayers that we hold in the silence of our hearts; for all our intentions spoken and unspoken,

let us pray to the Lord. O Lord of light,

today you have revealed to the world your saving love. Hear these our prayers

and grant them in the name of your Son, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

  • As part of their preparation for the January 23 Confirmation, the eighth grade students from the school and Religious Education Program wrote letters to the parish to introduce themselves and explain why they want to become adults in the Church. Below is a letter from Vanessa Zink who is a student in the Religious Education Program. Dear St. Philip the Apostle Parish,

I hope this letter finds you and all of the members of the church well. I am Vanessa Zink and I am being confirmed in the Church this year. My mom and my dad are Christians who have helped me not only through this Confirmation but also through every step in my journey in the Catholic Church. They have helped, along with my teachers, priests, deacons, and other figures in the church, to make me the best Christian I can be, following the word of God both within the Church and outside it. Not only have they been great Christians, but they have also been unconditionally supportive and all I could ask for in parents. I also have a brother and a sister, Danny and Alyssa. Both of them are older than me and have experienced the sacraments and became examples for me. They’re always there for advice and have been like best friends to me for as long as I can remember, helping me push through when things have gotten tough. I love them to death the same way they love me, and I hope we can strengthen our relationships even more through this time, as it has been frustrating and difficult all around. My last and youngest family member is my dog, Penny. She, whether she knows it or not, has been supporting me through thick and thin, and she is the most loyal and affectionate dog. Immediately I had felt a connection to St. Valentine as my Confirmation saint, partially because his feast day is my birthday. However, it goes deeper than that. I value love more than anything else, and I’ve always been passionate about finding, receiving, and giving love. St. Valentine, as the patron saint of marriage and lovers and someone who helped lovers marry when they had nowhere else to turn, quickly became my first choice. My sponsor is my brother Danny, who I introduced earlier. He’s been an exemplary person for me for my entire life, through school life and home life. He is a very sweet person who is willing to stand up for what he believes it right. He also tries his best every day and is willing to help whenever I need it, which is why he was my choice as my sponsor. After I am confirmed, I plan not only to go to church on Sundays for Mass, but also participating in religious activities whenever I’m able to, online, within the church, or outside in everyday life. I will do my best to spread my faith in God to everyone, and pray every day for those who need it. I want to be confirmed because my faith is something I’ve always been passionate about, and to be confirmed in the Church is displaying that this is truly the faith that I choose to believe in above all else. Receiving this holy sacrament would officially make me an adult member of the parish, and I value that more than anything. Not only do I plan to attend church for Masses every Sunday, but I would also love to be able to help communicate and organize activities within the parish. I’d also love to help teach and inspire the people in the Church as much as I can, and possibly bring my own spouse and children to help expand the community in the future.

The students in Grades 4, 5, and 6 in the Religious Education Program participated in the following service projects in Advent. The sixth graders made appreciation posters which were delivered, along with treats, by their

teachers Mr. Sal and Mrs. Rita to the Addison Fire Department and Addison Police Department. The students

also mailed holiday cards to the first responders. Fourth and fifth graders sent Christmas cards to the residents at

the Beacon Hill Health Center in Lombard.

  • In their search for the newborn king of the Jews, the magi travel first to the place where one could plausibly expect to find a royal child—the royal city of Jerusalem. But they do not find Jesus among the wealthy, powerful, and elite. Instead, they are sent by the chief priests and scribes to Bethlehem, a small town that is a fitting birthplace for one who will use his authority to “shepherd” his people rather than rule over them with military power and coercive control. In Jesus we find the marriage of total power with complete humility and vulnerability. The epiphany is a revelation of the person of

Christ and a revelation of who we are called to be as Christians. The magi, well known, respected and revered in their own country, come to Bethlehem to kneel at the feet of a peasant child whom they recognize as a king greater than any they have ever known. May we also find Jesus and be ready to serve him in the weak and the poor, for in our humility we become like Christ, the shepherd king. Source: Living Liturgy by Liturgical Press

  • Today is the Epiphany of our Lord. The Wise Men came to represent the world in recognizing that the child in the manger is the one God promised in order to bring salvation to the world. Let us take time to reflect on how we see God’s presence in our lives and the lives of those around us—especially his presence during this last year with all the challenges we faced—individually, as a community and as a country as we learned to live with the pandemic and all it that it has done to change how we live our lives.

Our affirmation of the baby Jesus as our Savior and the fulfillment of the promise of redemption enables us to realize the potential of our lives in bringing the Light of Christ to the world. As we begin this New Year, may we all see that the salvation God promised is for all his people. When we see Christ in others as the Magi did, we are assured that God welcomes everyone into his presence. Just imagine how different the world would be if everyone accepted others for the people they are. Let us be always thankful for all that God has done and continues to do in our lives.

Marriage Information: Please call the rectory to make arrangements at least six months (a year is preferred) in advance of the wedding date. It is recommended you do not rent reception facilities until your wedding date is confirmed with the pastor. Your preferred wedding date may be unavailable, and we do not want you to lose your deposit with the reception venue. Parish Registration: New families are welcome and are asked to register at the rectory. Also, previously registered parishioners are asked to notify us of any address changes. Emergency Sick or Anointing Calls: Please notify us immediately of any serious illness in your family. If you have a hospitalized loved one who would like a visit, please call the rectory with contact information since the hospitals and hospices no longer notify parishes. Please do not wait until the last minute to have someone anointed. There are always accidents/emergencies, but sometimes there is less panic when the anointing can be done prior to someone passing.
