TODAY’S GOSPEL MEDITATION...by Don Schwager How do we enter the kingdom of God? In announcing the good news, Jesus gave two explicit things each of us must do to in order to receive the kingdom of God: repent and believe. When we submit to Christ's rule in our lives and believe the gospel message the Lord Jesus gives us the grace and power to live a new way of life as citizens of his kingdom. He gives us grace to renounce the kingdom of darkness ruled by sin and Satan, the father of lies (John 8:44) and the ruler of this present world (John 12:31). That is why repentance is the first step. Repentance means to change - to change my way of thinking, my attitude, disposition, and life choices so that Christ can be the Lord and Master of my heart rather than sin, selfishness, and greed. If we are only sorry for the con-sequences of our sins, we will very likely keep repeating the sin that is mastering us. True repentance requires a contrite heart (Psalm 51:17) and sorrow for sin and a firm resolution to avoid it in the future. The Lord Jesus gives us grace to see sin for what it really is - a rejection of his love and wis-dom for our lives and a refusal to do what is good and in accord with his will. His grace brings pardon and help for turning away from everything that would keep us from his love and truth. To believe is to take Jesus at his word and to recognize that God loved us so much that he sent his only begotten Son to free us from bondage to sin and harmful desires. God made the supreme sacrifice of his Son on the cross to bring us back to a relationship of peace and friendship with himself. He is our Father and he wants us to live as his sons and daughters. God loved us first and he invites us in love to surrender our lives to him. Do you believe that the gospel -the good news of Jesus - has power to free you from bondage to sin and fear? When Jesus preached the gospel message he called others to follow as his disciples and he gave them a mission - "to catch people for the kingdom of God." What kind of disciples did he choose? Smelly fishermen! In the choice of the first apostles we see a characteristic feature of Jesus' work: he chose very ordinary people. They were non-professionals, had no wealth or position. They were chosen from the common people who did ordinary things, had no special education, and no social advantages. Jesus wanted ordinary people who could take an assignment and do it extraordinarily well. He chose these individuals, not for what they were, but for what they would be capable of becoming under his direction and power. When the Lord calls us to serve, we must not think we have nothing to offer. The Lord takes what ordinary people, like us, can offer and uses it for greatness in his kingdom. Do you believe that God wants to work in and through you for his glory?

WHAT ARE EXTRA ORDINARY MINISTERS?

Canon 230, Code of Canon Law, changed in 1983, states:

“Where the needs of the Church require and ministers are not available, lay people, can exercise the ministry of the word, preside over liturgical prayers, confer baptism and distribute Holy Communion, in accordance with the provisions of the law.”

The title of Extra Ordinary Minister of Holy Communion is given to the laity, who meet specific requirements, who are authorized by the diocese to administer Holy Communion to members of the parish during celebration of the Mass. Distribution is also permitted to the sick or persons unable to attend Mass. To qualify, one must be a member of the parish in good standing and fully initiated into the Roman Catholic Church. Ministers serve at the Mass of their choice and are placed on a three month schedule. Schedules are flexible and will be modified to fit one’s needs.

CAN I BE AN ALTAR SERVERS?

Formerly, only young men and seminarians could serve at the altar, until Canon 230, Code of Canon Law was changed in 1983 which provided the option to permit fe-males to serve at the altar. The term Altar Server is now widely used and accepted due to this. Some of the duties that an Altar Server may be called upon to do during Mass are:

• Entrance: May be asked to carry the processional cross and candles at the front of the entrance

procession.

• Hold the Sacramentary for the priest.

• Offertory: When the priest receives the gifts, Altar Servers assist him by carrying them.

• Preparation of the chalice: Present the cruets of water and wine for the deacon or priest to pour in the chalice.

• Lavabo: Administers the water to the priest as he ritually washes his hands.

• Recessional: At the conclusion of Mass, again the processional cross and candles may be carried.

To be an Altar Server, a student must have received First Holy Communion and be a member of St. Philip the Apostle parish. Servers are placed on a three month schedule for the Mass of their choice. Schedules can be changed as needed.

For more information on becoming an Altar Server or an Extra Ordinary Minister, contact Jim Calamita at 668-8370 x 220.

Good Sunday Morning! Can you imagine abandoning your famly, friends, or team to follow “some guy”? You might be considered crazy! Yet the Gospel tells stories of how people did just that to follow Jesus. They just knew they had to follow him. Today, you might hear Jesus calling you in the words of Scripture, in prayer, in the voices of teachers, priests, friends, and family members who love and cheer you on. When you hear an invitation to change, do you have the courage to drop everything? What are you willing to leave behind to be a better disciple of Jesus?

In Christ’s Peace, Sharon Pikul

PARENTS: Talk to your child about the classes they attend each week. Ask them questions about what was discussed:What was the lesson about? Was there one special idea that you’d like to talk about? Share your faith experiences with your children—they will see the “hands of Christ” in action, through your example!!

Operation Desert Storm, popularly known as the first Gulf War, was the successful U.S.-Allied response to Iraq’s at-tempt to overwhelm neighboring Kuwait. On August 2, 1990. Iraqi forces invade Kuwait. Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein had been making threats against Kuwait for some time, but his actual invasion caught the world by surprise. Word of the Iraqi attack reached Washington, D.C. as Iraqi forces assembled at the Saudi border. The Pentagon had plans in place to aid the Saudis, and U.S. forces went on standby for the Saudis’ request. On the morning of January 16, 1991, Allied forces be-gan the first phase of Desert Storm, also known as Desert Shield. One hundred hours after the ground campaign began, President Bush declared a cease-fire—declaring the libera-tion of Kuwait on February 27, 1991. On April 5, 1991, President Bush announced that U.S. relief supply airdrops would be made to Kurdish refugees in Turkey and northern Iraq. The U.S. transport delivered some 72,000 pounds of supplies in the first six Operation Provided Comfort mis-sions. By April 20, the construction of the first Provide Com-fort tent city began near Zakhu, Iraq. By war’s end, U.S. forces released 71,204 Iraqi prisoners to Saudi control. That All May Be One

Today is Ecumenical Sunday when we celebrate what God is doing through the many ecumeni-cal movements---“that all may be one...that the world may be-lieve” (John 17:21). The movement for Christian Unity began in 1907 with the concept of an octave (8days) of prayer between the Feast of the Chair of St. Peter (January 18) and the Conversion of St. Paul ( January 25).

In 1993, the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian

Unity explicitly encouraged participation in the week of

prayer for Christian Unity. We are called to offer our prayers

this week so that God’s love through Jesus Christ may bring

peace and reconciliation to all God’s people.
