In our scriptures this weekend we hear that Jesus promises to help all those who labor and are burdened if they follow His teachings and accept His help. Everyone has a yoke or a burden in life. The yoke, of course, was a device worn on an animal’s shoulders to distribute the weight of the burden more evenly. Jesus does not say he will eliminate all yokes or burdens but rather, that in following Him, the problems and struggles of daily life become easier and lighter with His guidance

and grace. Even in our daily struggles we can find rest in Christ.

July 5, 2020 (Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time) Prayer of the Faithful Let us present our needs and the needs of the world to God who gives us rest from our burdens.

For our Church as we continue to reveal God’s saving message to God’s least and lowliest, let us pray to the Lord.

For the people of our nation who work to lift the burdens of those who are weighed down among us, let us pray to the

Lord.

For an end to racism and systems of privilege in our country, let us pray to the Lord.

For the young people in our midst who need employment, encouragement, and guidance, let us pray to the Lord.

For those who serve in our armed forces, and for their families and loved ones, let us pray to the Lord.

For all those who are sick, for all who suffer from COVID-19, and for all who have died, let us pray to the Lord.

For all the prayers that we hold in the silence of our hearts; for all our intentions spoken and unspoken, let us pray to the Lord.

O God, your Son proclaims peace to the nations.

Grant that peace to our world today, and hear all these our prayers which we lift up in Jesus’ name.

Sunday Readings for July 5, 2020 (Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time) Reading 1 (Zec 9:9–10) Thus says the LORD: Rejoice heartily, O daughter Zion, shout for joy, O daughter Jerusalem! See, your king shall come to you; a just savior is he, meek, and riding on an ass, on a colt, the foal of an ass. He shall banish the chariot from Ephraim, and the horse from Jerusalem; the warrior’s bow shall be banished, and he shall proclaim peace to the nations. His dominion shall be from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth. Responsorial Psalm (Ps 145:1–2, 8–9, 10–11, 13–14) R. (cf. 1) I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God. or: R. Alleluia. I will extol you, O my God and King, and I will bless your name forever and ever. Every day will I bless you, and I will praise your name forever and ever. R. I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God. or: R. Alleluia. The LORD is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and of great kindness. The LORD is good to all and compassionate toward all his works. R. I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God. or: R. Alleluia. Let all your works give you thanks, O LORD, and let your faithful ones bless you. Let them discourse of the glory of your kingdom and speak of your might.

R. I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God. or: R. Alleluia. The LORD is faithful in all his words and holy in all his works. The LORD lifts up all who are falling and raises up all who are bowed down. R. I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God. or: R. Alleluia. Reading 2 (Rom 8:9, 11–13) Brothers and sisters: You are not in the flesh; on the contrary, you are in the spirit, if only the Spirit of God dwells in you. Whoever does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. If the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, the one who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also, through his Spirit that dwells in you. Consequently, brothers and sisters, we are not debtors to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh, you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. Gospel (Mt 11:25–30) At that time Jesus exclaimed: “I give praise to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to little ones. Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him. Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.” Excerpts from the Lectionary for Mass for Use in the Dioceses of the United States of America, second typical edition © 2001, 1998, 1997, 1986, 1970 Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, Inc., Washington, DC. We live in an age and a society that has never been more educated or had a higher standard of living, yet never have we carried as much debt. Many are living beyond their means. We have so many resources and time-saving devices at our hands, yet our lives are more complex than ever. While many people may not engage in extreme manual labor, we rarely escape our jobs. Many are connected through phones and constantly receive calls, texts, and emails. Others spend hours in traffic on their daily commutes or pack on the frequent flyer miles. We spend hours binge-watching our favorite shows. Many children are accustomed to being in front of a screen all the time and no longer know how to play creatively. The statistics for those who continue to leave the Church and all forms of organized religion also continue to rise. While there is no such thing as a “good old days” to return to, there was something to be said for sleeping soundly after putting in a good day’s work, and for a family gathering around the table for a shared meal. For many, this model for Eucharist rarely exists. Jesus knows and feels our pains, and calls out, “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.”

This weekend, as we celebrate the birth of our nation and the freedoms that we enjoy because of the men and women who gave their lives in defense of our country, let us also thank God for those who are currently serving in the Armed Forces to ensure that our freedom remains a cherished gift. Another kind of freedom can be felt by all of us each time we attend Mass and receive the Eucharist. Instead of many dying for our freedom from tyranny, one died to free us from sin. Our participation in the Eucharist

allows us to experience the entire life and history of the Church, over 2000 years of endurance and triumph over sin—sin which takes away our freedom to be in union with God. We hear the scripture accounts of brave men and women who stood up for the Kingdom of God, the kingdom that we are all citizens of by virtue of our baptism. At the moment of consecration, we are at the Supper of the Lord with all Catholics around the world and all those in heaven as well. We are all part of something that is bigger than anything we can ever hope to imagine, the all-encompassing love of the Father. As you enjoy this Independence Day weekend, consider that every Sunday is in actuality our independence day for sin because of the One who chose to give his life for the life of the world.

Today’s gospel reading seems to provide a stark contrast to the one we heard just last Sunday when Jesus told the disciples that only the one who was willing to take up his cross was worthy of following him. Today we hear Jesus proclaim, “My yoke is easy and my burden light.” Which are we to believe? Is the life of discipleship one of hardship and drudgery or one of comfort and ease? Just as Jesus offers many parables to help his disciples understand the mystery of the kingdom of God, it seems he also gives us different images of what it means to be a disciple. As with the parables, no one image

can completely capture and express what Jesus is trying to relate, but each contains truth. We could look at this from the perspective of our own faith journey. Within the life of faith, when have you faced hardship or heartbreak? When we open our hearts to love God and others, we also open ourselves up for pain, disappointment, and grief. And yet, our sure hope in the Lord is that light is stronger than darkness, love is stronger than hatred, and life is stronger than death. This hope eases the burden of the cross, transforming it to the yoke of Jesus. And perhaps it gives us insight into who really carries our crosses. When we are yoked together with the Lord of Life, we shoulder the burden together, and as was revealed to St. Paul, Jesus tells us, “My grace is sufficient for you for power is made perfect in weakness” (2Cor 12:9; NABRE), another paradox in the life of faith. Support for Parish Businesses We ask that you remember our parish bulletin advertisers in any way you can during and after this difficult time.

We want to express our extreme gratitude for everything that they do. They are the financial resource for the bulletin which helps us to stay in touch with you. As you can, please patronize these businesses that do so much for

St. Philip the Apostle and our community. Please keep them in your prayers as well.

Once Again: “Come to Me.” The gospel today is the same one heard on June 19 for the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Jesus never tires of inviting. We should never tire of hearing the invitation.

Asked again: How will I go to Christ? What rest do I need? Whom will I bring with me?

Baptism Information: Baptisms are celebrated on the second & fourth Sunday of each month. A pre-Baptism program must be attended by the parents. Please call the rectory to register for a program. Marriage Information: Please call the rectory to make arrangements at least six months (a year is preferred) in advance of the wedding date. It is recommended you do not rent reception facilities until your wedding date is confirmed with the pastor. Your preferred wedding date may be unavailable, and we do not want you to lose your deposit with the reception venue. Parish Registration: New families are welcome and are asked to register at the rectory. Also, previously registered parishioners are asked to notify us of any address changes. Emergency Sick or Anointing Calls: Please notify us immediately of any serious illness in your family. If you have a hospitalized loved one who would like a visit, please call the rectory with contact information since the hospitals and hospices no longer notify parishes. Please do not wait until the last minute to have someone anointed. There are always accidents/emergencies, but sometimes there is less panic when the anointing can be done prior to someone passing.

We now have available low-gluten hosts which make it possible for people who have celiac disease or allergies to wheat or gluten to be able to receive communion. If you have celiac disease or an allergy to wheat or gluten, please let us know before Mass so that arrangements can be made

for you to be able to receive communion at Mass.
