A Message From Our Pastor

Father’s Formed.org Suggestion of the Week MOVIES – MOVIE NIGHT or KIDS

The Pilgrim's Progress

As our children have returned back to school and pursue new academic experiences, I offer the aid of the giver of knowledge. The more we invite the Lord into our every aspect of our lives, the more He grants His helping grace upon us. We can pray for His grace and aid in everything. I encourage you to pray with your children in preparation for their studies. A great way to start the day is with prayer. Invite God into the whole day and open the minds and hearts of your children that they may grow in knowledge that day. Maybe do this on the way to school. Encourage them to also offer prayer when they sit down to do home-work or study for an exam that the Lord may help them retain the knowledge. One other time for them to pray is before they take a test. Prayer at this time can obtain for them grace to be calm and recall the information that they have studied. Below is a wonderful prayer attributed to St. Thomas Aquinas, patron of students. If you have a younger child that may not fully understand the words/phrases of the prayer, you can use this as a spring board to help formulate a prayer for your children to pray before school, studying, homework, or taking a test. Come, Holy Spirit, Divine Creator, true source of light and fountain of wisdom! Pour forth your brilliance upon my dense intellect, dissipate the darkness which covers me, that of sin and of ignorance. Grant me a penetrating mind to understand, a retentive memory, method and ease in learning, the lucidity to comprehend, and abundant grace in expressing myself. Guide the beginning of my work, di-rect its progress, and bring it to successful completion. This I ask through Jesus Christ, true God and true man, living and reigning with You and the Father, forever and ever. Amen. St. Thomas Aquinas, pray for us.

Key Scriptural Passage: Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone wants to become my follower, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” (Matthew 16:24) Questions for Discussion: Adult: What has it meant to you to take up your cross and follow Jesus? FIRST READING - Ezekiel 33:7-9

Thus says the LORD: You, son of man, I have appointed watchman for the house of Israel; when you hear me say any-thing, you shall warn them for me. If I tell the wicked, “O wicked one, you shall surely die, ” and you do not speak out to dissuade the wicked from his way, the wicked shall die for his guilt, but I will hold you responsible for his death. But if you warn the wicked, trying to turn him from his way, and he refuses to turn from his way, he shall die for his guilt, but you shall save yourself.

SECOND READING - Romans 13:8-10

Brothers and sisters: Owe nothing to anyone, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery; you shall not kill; you shall not steal; you shall not covet, ” and whatever other commandment there may be, are summed up in this saying, namely, “You shall love your neighbor as

yourself.” Love does no evil to the neighbor; hence, love is the fulfillment of the law.

GOSPEL - Matthew 18:15-20 Jesus said to his disciples: “If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he lis-tens to you, you have won over your brother. If he does not lis-ten, take one or two others along with you, so that ‘every fact may be established on the testimony of two or three witnesses.’ If he refuses to listen to them, tell the church. If he refuses to listen even to the church, then treat him as you would a Gentile or a tax collector. Amen, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Again, amen, I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything for which they are to pray, it shall be granted to them by my heavenly Father. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.”

Growing in Faith…from Scripture: Matthew 16:21-27…The Secret to a Happy Christian Life... In this reading, Jesus shocked his disciples by predicting his own death. Like many Jews of the day, they had believed that the Messiah would be a triumphant and powerful warrior king who would trample the enemies of his people. All longed for retaliation after centuries of slavery and humilia-tion. Jesus predicted he would be put to death instead, de-stroying their ideas of the Messiah. Like a good friend, Peter wanted to protect Jesus from discomfort and attempted to reassure him. But Jesus knew that unless he suffered and died, we would all die in our sins. He couldn’t turn from his purpose and he rebuked Peter for tempting him. Sometimes our most difficult temptations come from our loved ones trying to spare us pain. Saving ourselves from earthly pain might mean doing something that puts our souls in jeopardy. Avoiding the pain and sacrifice that comes with being a Christian could cause us to die spiritually and emotionally. The secret of a happy Christian life is not to avoid our personal Cross but to em-brace it as Jesus did. “Instruct Me In Your Ways, Lord” is a 16-week online study on the Pentateuch (the first five books of the Old Testament) that consists of 7 Revelations. Daily audio and text reflections are e-mailed right to your inbox with online journal, prayer links and bonus features. It began Aug. 23, but people can still register to get all of the con-tent. Register at www.godsembrace.org Coronavirus Prayer...Lord Jesus Chr ist, our Divine Phy-sician, we ask You to guard and protect us from Coronavirus Covid-19 and all serious illness. For all that died from it, have mercy, for those that are ill now, bring healing. For those searching for a remedy, enlighten them, for medical caregivers helping the sick, strengthen and shield them. For those working to contain the spread, grant them success, for those afraid, grant peace. May your Precious Blood be our defense and salvation. By Your grace, may You turn the evil of disease into moments of consolation and hope. May we always fear the contagion of sin more than any illness. We abandon ourselves to Your Infinite Mercy. Amen. - Pedro de la Cruz

The first two weeks of the Pastoral Institute Sacraments course will examine grace and the first sin, our responsibil-ities toward the sacraments, material things as instruments of grace and what is meant by “efficacious signs of [sanctifying] grace.” The next four weeks will examine the Sacraments of Initiation: 1) Baptism, 2) Confirmation, and 3) Eucharist For each sacrament, the theology of the sacrament, the ori-gins of the sacrament, and the way in which the sacrament is practiced in the Catholic Church will be examined.
