Growing in Grace Presentation of the Lord

Prayer for the Week: Lord, help me be your light.

“The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” ~Psalm 27:1 Today’s Gospel calls us to be the light of Jesus, to let our light shine among all. How do we let our light shine among our family, our friends, our co-workers and our community? How do you remind your-self that you are God’s shining light? Now is the time, at the start of Ordinary Time, to do a “basket” check. To make sure that we are en-suring our light is shining bright by understanding how a simple ges-ture can mean so much. Consider the “routine” actions we do as Catholics. Doing these actions with purpose and intention reminds us we are Christ’s light to others. Here are some examples:

Genuflection - According to the General Instruction of the Roman Mis-sal, "a genuflection, made by bending the right knee to the ground, signifies adoration, and therefore it is reserved for the Most Blessed Sacrament" (No. 274). Genuflection is done by all who pass before the Blessed Sacrament in the Tabernacle. Those who cannot Genuflect be-cause of physical limitations should bow reverently. This is a deliberate action, facing the Tabernacle, making the sign of the cross. We are in the presence of the King of Kings, Lord of Lords. Sign of the Cross – The Sign of the Cross is an outward demonstra-tion of our commitment to The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit – by touching our forehead, sternum, left shoulder, then right shoulder with our right hand (fingers), ending with both hands together saying Amen. The Sign of the Cross is both a silent and verbal prayer that can be made several times a day and is easy to do that sometimes we for-get, and it becomes one fluid movement. It can remind you that Christ is always with you and your protector. We use the Sign of the Cross to invoke the Trinity when we start our prayers and when we end.

Slight Head Bowing at Jesus Name – “A bow of the head is made when the three Divine Persons are named together and at the names of Jesus, of the Blessed Virgin Mary and of the saint in whose honor Mass is being celebrated” (General Instruction of the Roman Missal, #275). So, you will notice when Jesus’ name is said in such places as The Glo-ria, The Creed, The Hail Mary, we bow our heads in recognition, praise and honor of our Lord Jesus Christ. A Letter to St. Philip’s From Seminarian Michael Marincel

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

As I begin this new semester of formation at St. Joseph Semi-nary College in Covington, Louisiana, I find great encouragement in knowing that many of you are keeping me regularly in your prayers. Know that I also continue to pray for you all. Life in seminary can be challenging at times, but more than anything, it is a tremendous bless-ing. It is inspiring to live and work with so many young men who have such love and zeal for God and for the Church, which Christ founded for the salvation of souls. Seminary life has provided me with a plethora of opportunities for growing closer to God through prayer and studies as well as through activities and outreach within the seminary and local communities. As well as studying Philosophy and the Liberal Arts and learning to main-tain a healthy and consistent prayer life, I have also had the opportuni-ty to play on the seminary football and soccer teams, sing in the Eng-lish and Spanish Scholas, get to know and work with the poor of our area, and help with our annual celebration of Tet (Vietnamese New Year). St. Joseph Seminary College has an incredibly vibrant commu-nity life, and I thank God for the many blessings I have received through being a part of it.

I thank the Lord also for all the graces and blessings I have received through the parish community of St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church. I am grateful for all your prayers and support as I continue striving to follow God’s will for my life. I will continue to keep you all in my prayers.

May the peace of Christ be with you all.

Your brother in Christ,

Michael Marincel 3rd Philosophy Diocese of Fort Worth

LOOKING TOWARD LENT As every runner knows, getting ready for the big race requires prepara-tion. The weeks leading up to Ash Wednesday are a time when we begin to motivate and prepare ourselves for the “spiritual workout” of Lent. Once a separate liturgical season, these three weeks are still a valuable opportunity to “get ready to run” with these beautiful reflec-tions from Fr. Allan Hawkins:

T he short series of Sundays between the Feast of the Epiphany and the beginning of Lent are now counted as Sundays “in Ordi-nary Time”. But in the past, as the oldest among us may re-member, there were three transitional Sundays before Ash

Wednesday: Septuagesima, Sexagesima & Quinquagesima. These are, of course, Latin words and they give us a kind of countdown to Easter – that is, 70, 60 & 50 days respectively; and, as such, they were intended to provide a preparatory cycle for Lent. Thus, today (Feb 9), which we now call the Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time, was then known as Septua-gesima. Quinquagesima is exactly fifty days before Easter but Sexagesi-ma (60) and Septuagesima (70) are only approximations.

Seventy is one of those great evocative Biblical numbers. God had chas-tised Israel for its sin by an exile of seventy years (or rather almost sev-enty years). In Babylon, they learned the full measure of God’s law and then turned to him in prayer and fasting, mourning for their sins. There were no songs of praise there: “On the willows there we hung up our lyres” (Psalm 137:2).

So the Church wore the violet of mourning from Septuagesima. The Alleluia, the Gloria in Excelsis, the Te Deum — those songs of our heavenly homeland — would all be silenced. In prayer and fasting, mindful of God’s just demands, pleading for his abundant mercy, we too would wait until the messenger might arrive with “good tidings ... who publishes salvation, who says to Zion, ‘Your God reigns.’” (Isa. 52:7) The poet John Betjeman wrote this by way of explanation:

Septuagesima – seventy days To Easter’s primrose tide of praise; The Gesimas – Septua, Sexa, Quinc Mean Lent is near, which makes you think. Septuagesima – when we’re told To “run the race”, to “keep our hold”, Ignore injustice, not give in, and practice stern self-discipline.

With their summons to “run the race,” to “keep our hold,” the three “Gesima” Sundays established a context for Lent’s summons to repent-ance and Easter’s announcement of the joy of forgiveness.

The Collect for Septuagesima anticipates two chief ideas of Lent – the confession of our sin and its just punishment, and the prayer for for-giveness from God’s mercy in Jesus Christ. Thus in these three weeks the faithful begin to turn their minds to Lent, its solemnity and how they will keep it, in joining with their Lord in his fasting, meditating, praying and resisting temptation in the wilderness.

Hands on Opportunity to Help the Christ Child Society Have you ever wondered what the Christ Child Soci-ety does when they aren't serving up delicious Sun-day morning treats? Come find out on Saturday, February 15, at 10 AM in classroom 6/8! We will be assembling hygiene packs for the families we serve (thanks to the generosity of our parish from our December bake sale!). This will also be an open house and a chance to meet some of our members. Membership in the Christ Child Society is a very manageable time commitment and is a perfect way to do service for both the parish and greater community while establishing friendships. For more information, please contact Patricia Gonzalez at [email protected] or send an email to [email protected].

Serve Those in Prison When You Donate to the Annual Diocesan Appeal Thank you to all the parishioners of St. Philip’s who have responded generously to the Annual Diocesan Appeal. Together, we have raised $129,247.89! For those families who have not yet made a donation, please help us reach 100 percent participation by using the forms available in the Parish Office or text ADA to 91999. The Eucharist Makes Us the Church, and your grateful response will make a differ-ence to those who are incarcerated in jails and prisons in 28 counties
