Growing in Grace The Archangels and Holy Guardian Angels
Prayer for the Week Dear Angels, help me to never turn my face from the Lord. (Repeat often)
Inspiration from the Saints "Meditation on Jesus Christ crucified is a precious balm which sweetens all pain." -St. Paul of the Cross
Turning Towards the Lord "It is precisely because the angels never turn their faces from the Lord that they can carry out His missions for them on earth. In the same way, if we want to grow in the spiritual life; if we want to become holy; if we want to be divinized, as the Fathers of the Church describe the life of grace, then we should ask the angels to help us never to turn our faces away from the face of God and to be mindful of Him always and in everything, just as they are. In loving our neighbor, we love God; in loving our God, we learn to love our neighbor. Let us ask the angels, therefore, for three gifts: First, to pray always; second, never to with-draw our face from the face of God; and third, to live, to act, to move, and to choose always in the presence of God. Whenever we pray the Sanctus (Holy, Holy, Holy), we can remember these three angelic char-acteristics and order our prayer of petition in union with their praise."
~ Fr. John Horgan, His Angels at Our Side: Understanding Their Power in Our Souls and the World "HOLY, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts. Heaven and earth are full of Thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest."

Thursday, October 31* - 7 PM (Vigil)
Friday, November 1* - 6:30 AM | 12:15 PM | 7 PM

29th Sunday in Ordinary Time — October 20, 2019 5
H ave you ever noticed that Our Blessed Lord, in teaching and forming His disciples, gave us com-paratively few specific instructions. Rather, the Gospels set out for us a great series of principles – the Beatitudes, for example, in the Sermon on the Mount -- according to which the Christian life is to be led; and the sublime parables of Jesus direct us to lives of love for God and neighbor, for-
giveness, generosity, courage and self-sacrifice.
Certainly, however, there are some direct commands: “Do this in memory of me”. “When you pray, say ‘Our Father’”. And there is the Great Commission (Matthew 28: 18-19). Jesus appears to his disciples at the As-cension, and tells us to “make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit ....”
As Robert, Cardinal Sarah, has recently pointed out, these instructions are directed to every Christian, each according to his or her vocation. And there is great urgency about it, for it is empowered by the love which lives in the heart of the Church and which radiates out to the ends of the earth.
This Sunday – World Mission Sunday -- is the one Sunday in the year when the Church throughout comes together in support of mission. Donations from these worldwide Masses go entirely to support churches, hospitals, schools and vocations in countries where the Church is new, young or poor. World Mission Sun-day, usually on this, the penultimate Sunday in October, is our chance to show love and solidarity to our family in faith overseas. Through our prayers, we support missionaries everywhere in spreading the Good News. And by donating we respond to Christ’s call to feed the hungry and clothe the naked.
But there is a potential danger for us if we think that we can witness to our faith in Christ basically by being good and doing good. You may have heard it said that we should “Preach the Gospel at all times. Use words if necessary.” It is always attributed to St. Francis of Assisi—founder of the Franciscan Order—and is intend-ed to say that proclaiming the Gospel by example is more virtuous than actually proclaiming with one’s voice. St. Francis never said such a thing. None of his disciples, early or later biographers have these words coming from his mouth. It doesn’t show up in any of his writings. There is no escape for us from the responsibility to evange-lize: to defend and to proclaim the Gospel of the Word made flesh. It is the “Great Commission” given to the Church. As C.S. Lewis put it: Any believer who has a reasonably good knowledge of the Bible and a reasonably healthy Christian life can share with someone less far along about the teachings of Jesus and how to follow them— provid-ing, of course, that they are doing so themselves. .... If this com-mission sounds daunting to you, take comfort that it was daunting to Jesus’ original disciples. And take even more comfort in His promise to them and to us: “I am with you always, to the end of the age” (Matt. 28:20). The Spirit of Christ, the Holy Spirit, will be with us every step of the way. This week’s Reflection is by Fr. Allan Hawkins
Second Collection for World Mission Sunday Today is World Mission Sunday: We celebrate this day by remembering our baptismal call - to bring the Gos-pel to all! The collection today for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith ensures the work and service of the Mission Church, as it supports priests, religious and lay leaders who offer the Lord’s mercy and concrete help to the most vulnerable commu-nities in the Pope’s missions. Dona-tions may be made through the bas-ket in the Narthex this weekend, by texting MISSION to 91999, or online at stphilipcc.weshareonline.org
