Growing in Grace Presentation of the Lord
Prayer for the Week: Savior of the world, have mercy on us!
“Today we too, like Mary and Simeon, want to take Jesus into our arms, to bring him to his people. Surely we will be able to do so if we enter into the mystery in which Jesus himself is our guide. Let us bring others to Jesus, but also, let us allow ourselves to be led by him. This is what we should be: guides who themselves are guided.” - Pope Francis, Homily for the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, February 2, 2015
The Presentation of the Lord February 2nd is the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord in the Temple 40 days after His birth at Christmas. Mary and Joseph bring baby Je-sus to the Temple in Jerusalem to complete Mary’s ritual purification after childbirth and to perform the redemption of the firstborn son, in obedience to the Torah. Luke describes how the infant Jesus was wel-comed by Simeon and Anna the prophetess as he entered the Temple; their testimony revealed Him as the Messiah. These elders acknowl-edged Jesus as the Messiah they had been waiting for, representing the nation of Israel patiently waiting for the Messiah to come. It is like a second Annunciation to Mary. We find that it is not the scribes or scholars who recognize Jesus with Mary and Joseph, a poor, ordinary couple, but rather the two elders who prayed unceasingly in the Tem-ple. This is a reminder to us that God reveals himself frequently through people in ways that we do not expect or forsee. Simeon went on to prophesy to Mary that a sword would pierce her own heart. Mary will have to live her obedience of faith in suffering, accompanying the suffering Savior. Our Lady of Sorrows embraced the will of God even as Simeon predicted.
“Candlemas” Pope Sergius, at the beginning of the eighth century, began a candle-light procession for the celebration of this Feast day. At the end of the century, the blessing and candle distribution became a part of the cele-bration, giving this feast the popular name of “Candlemas.” Christ is the light of the nations. The candles kept by the faithful in their homes should be a sign of Christ, the light of the world. The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord in the Temple is like a bridge linking the two most important seasons of the Church year. Events from here on point toward Easter. We are reminded in this in-between time bridging Christmas and Easter that Christ is the light. May He shine in our hearts and homes.

“Is Any Among You Sick?” The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick will be offered this Friday, February 7, during 9 AM Mass. The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is for anyone suffering from a grave illness, experiencing frailty due to old age, or about to undergo surgery. If you are facing any of these conditions, don’t be afraid to receive Anointing of the Sick.
This special sacrament was given by Christ to provide the grace and strength needed by those who are suffering, uniting them to His own Passion. Anointing of the Sick prepares us to pass into the hands of God, whether it is His will to call us now, or at another time.
St. Philip’s offers Anointing of the Sick during the 9 AM Mass on the first Friday of every month, and also at any weekend Mass, on request. If your illness prevents you from coming to the church, call the Parish Office at 972-436-9581 to request a visit from one of the priests.
