From the pastor… The Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time - Today’s 1st reading (Job 7:1-4,6-7) treats the problem of suffering of the innocent, and of r etr ibution. Job, pious and upr ight, r ichly endowed in his own person and in domestic prosperity, suffers a sud-den and complete reversal of fortune. He loses his property and his children; a loathsome disease afflicts his body; and sorrow oppresses his soul. Nevertheless, Job does not complain against God. Job does not understand why he is afflicted. He curses the day of his birth and longs for death to bring an end to his suffering. Job proclaims his innocence and rejects his friend’s suggestion that his suffering must be a punish-ment for personal wrong doing and an invitation from God to repent-ance. Job maintains an attitude of humility and trust in God, which is deepened and strengthened by his experience of suffering. Job pro-claims “Naked I came forth from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I go back again. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken way; blessed be the name of the Lord!”

In today’s Gospel – Mark 1: 29-39 Jesus leaves the house of prayer – and goes to the house of Simon Peter and Andrew to cure Simon Peter’s mother-in-law. Pope Saint Paul II described this as an example for us, disciples of our Lord, “moving from Mass to mission. The word Mass comes for the words spoken at the end of the liturgy when it was yet celebrated in Latin – “Ite Misa est”! = Go, you are sent! Next weekend we will observe the Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The readings at Mass will be taken from Leviticus 13: 1-2, 44-46; 1 Corinthians 10:31- 11: 1; Mark 1:40-45.

The regular daily Mass schedule will resume this week. Dinner at Wendy’s – this Monday, Feb. 5th, from 5–8 p.m.. Our parish will receive 25% of your check in support of our Forward With Christ building campaign. Wendy’s is located at 1807 E. Broad Street in Statesville. Hope to see you there. The Planning & Building Committee will meet this Wednesday, Feb. 7th at 6:30 p.m. in the old rectory. Enter by the back door in the screened in porch. The 50 Plus Club – will meet in our Social Hall immediately follow-ing the 9 a.m. Mass this Thursday, Feb. 8th. If you are 50 years old – come join us. Next weekend we’ll kick off the annual Diocesan Support Appeal. This year’s theme is “We Are Called ”. As we earnestly work to raise funds to improve our own parish facilities, lets not forget the needs of others. This diocesan-wide appeal provides funding for the Housing Ministry, Education Ministries, Multicultural Ministries, the Eucharistic Congress and Vocations. Our assessment for 2018 is $45,951 Registered parishioners should have recently received a letter from Bishop Peter J. Jugis with pledge information about this appeal and another letter from myself. You may complete this pledge card and return it to the diocesan office or drop it in any collection at Mass. You can make pledges or gifts using the cards in the rear of the church. You can also make a contribution on line at www.charlottediocese.org/dsa. Please be sure to indicate the name of our parish in the comments section of the online form. There will be a second collection next weekend (Feb. 10 & 11) and at other times, to present an opportunity for those who attend Mass at St. Philips and who are not registered. PLEASE be extra generous in your response to this appeal, so that we don’t have to continue begging at Mass throughout all of Lent. Any shortfall, must be taken from our general savings.
