Dear Parishioners, I don’t have to remind all those who commute for a living how difficult it can be to deal with crowded expressways, buses or trains. Every year travelers are encouraged not to fly the day before Thanksgiving and every year on the day before Thanksgiving reporters tell us how crowded the airports are. We try our best to avoid crowds. Such was not the case with Jesus who didn’t seem to be bothered by crowds,

even when, according to today’s gospel, he was looking for some time alone with His disciples. He didn’t tell the crowds to leave Him alone. He didn’t say, “Come back tomorrow.” He saw the crowds, had pity on them, felt sorry for them, and “began to teach them many things.” No one can put a number to all the individual prayers which are lifted up to God every minute of every day. Yet God gives His time and attention to each and every prayer addressed to Him. All He asks is that we give Him and His words our time and our attention. In the Word,

Save the date! Our parish’s annual Fall Festival will be

held on Saturday, September 12, starting with an

Outdoor Mass at 4:00 p.m. The festival will follow at 5:00 p.m.

True to our parish tradition, there will be LOTS of food

(hamburgers, hot dogs, brats), children’s games, softball, and a DJ followed by a live band.

Mark your calendars now!

Please mark your calendars for the: Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Although this is not a Holy Day Obligation, there will be a Mass on Saturday, August 15, at 9:30 a.m.

ST. PHILIP THE APOSTLE DIVORCE SUPPORT GROUP The Divorce & Beyond Support Group is designed for men and women who are already divorced or who have filed for divorce. This is a six-week program to guide

people through the journey of initial stress, anger, and guilt—to ultimate forgiveness, happiness, and growth. Meetings will be held every other week on Thursdays from

7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in Room 1. The first session will be held from September 3 to November 5, 2015, and the next session will be held from January 7 through March

17, 2016. If you are interested in attending either one of these sessions, please complete the registration form that is available on the parish website at st-phil.org or clip this form and put it in the

We all need to go off to a “deserted place” occasionally to “rest a while.” Whether this means taking some time alone each day to pray and rest in God, making Sunday truly a day of rest, or setting aside a few days a year to make a retreat—all of us need time to regain our strength so we can take up our own mission. If the mission overwhelms us, we are at risk of losing sight of the mission itself. We even run the risk of becoming misleading prophets against whom Jeremiah warned.

Achieving a balance rhythm between the work of discipleship and the need to rest from weariness can be no easy task in itself. Like Jesus, we are called to shepherd—to care, teach, heal, listen, etc. At the same time, we must know when it is time for us to renew ourselves, to allow Jesus to shepherd and teach us, to balance our work of sharing the Gospel with rest, with time to replenish our spirit and energy. Self-giving and rest are two parallel poles to the dying and rising dynamic of the paschal mystery. Too much dying can crush us. Too much rest can lull us into being uncaring shepherds. The mission calls us to a balanced rhythm. Source: Living Liturgy, Liturgical Press

I would like to share with you a writing from one of my favorite authors, Henri

Nouwen, which reinforces the concept that we are all called to be community to one another.

Send Your Spirit of Love to Others by Henri Nouwen

After a short visit to earth the time comes for each of us to pass from this world to the next. We have been sent into the world as children, and in our passages and our losses we learn to love each other as spouse, parent, brother, sister or friend. We support one another through the passages of life, and together we grow in love. Finally we ourselves are called to depart and we leave this life and send our spirit of love to those close to us. It is the greatest gift we can give one another. We are on a journey living to make our lives abundantly fruitful through our leaving. When we leave, we will say, “It is good for you that I leave, because unless I pass away, I cannot send you my spirit to help you and inspire you.” Illness calls people to surround us and support us. By not resisting this support and by gratefully receiving another’s care, we call forth community and provide our caregivers an opportunity to give their own gifts of compassion, care, love, and service. As we are given into their hands, others are blessed and enriched by caring for us.
