Dear Parishioners, The Jewish leaders went to great lengths to rid the world of Jesus of Nazareth, even to ignoring their own laws. They illegally held their trial of Jesus before sunrise so no one would be available to testify on His behalf. While they originally charged Jesus with blasphemy when He stated that He was the Son of God, they illegally switched the charge to treason without presenting any evidence when they turned Him over to Pilate. Pilate did not formally state that Jesus was guilty but simply handed Him over to the soldiers. Had something like that happened in

the United States, the president would have granted a posthumous pardon to the victim and offered a heartfelt apology to the victim’s relatives. On this Easter Sunday, we celebrate the heartfelt love of our God who endured such a travesty of justice in order to win pardon for us. As His “trial” was held before sunrise, His followers came to His tomb before sunrise only to see that it was empty. The original sin of our ancestors removed us from the paradise which was the Garden of Eden. Our risen Lord made it possible for us to enter a new paradise through the glory of His redeeming love. Handed over to the soldiers for death, Jesus handed us the hope of eternal life. May you and those you love have a very Happy Easter! In the Word,

FROM PRE-CANA TO POST DECREE Tuesday, April 12, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.

This presentation is intended to enrich and deepen one’s appreciation for sacramental marriage. It will explore the church’s understanding of the meaning and purpose of marriage and its efficacy to achieve salvation. Participants will be able to reflect on Pope Francis’ comments regarding marriage and divorce and will hear the current IL law as it relates to marriage and divorce. Additionally, we will look to the Franciscan spirituality of Fr. Richard Rohr, and his concepts of contemplative non-dualism.

The presenter will be Deacon Vic Puscas, an instructor for the Joliet Diocese Foundations of Faith Program. He is married and is a practicing attorney. This event is a Mayslake Ministries presentation. mayslakeministries.org

MINISTRY FAIR Pope Francis encourages us to meet people where they are at and share the joy in our hearts. What better way than to become involved in ministry in your faith community. God gave us all gifts to share and depending on those gifts, there are ministries to share those gifts. St. Philips is having a Ministry Fair in the gym the weekend of April 9-10 after all

masses. We encourage you to stop by, pick up information, and then discern where God is calling you! You are the hands and feet of God in a world that is in much need of mercy and love.

I’ll be away from Monday, March 28, through Sunday, April 3. Many thanks to our visiting priests for their help.

Religious education classes will resume on April 6 and 9 after the Easter and spring breaks. Please visit the religious education and YOLO youth group tables at the Ministry Fair on April 9 and 10 in the gym to explore volunteer opportunities in our program. Consider sharing your faith with the youth of our parish! It doesn’t seem possible that we are approaching the end of another religious education school year! Registration forms for the 2016/2017 school year will be sent home with the oldest/only

child from Grades K-7 on the last day of classes (April 13 & 16) and, as always, there is a financial advantage if you register by June 1. At this time, we also ask families who have outstanding tuition to pay the balance of their fee. Thank you to the following people who participated in the High School Living Stations of the Cross on March 11: Angela Addante, Ethan Macaraeg, Nicholas Savinos, Holly Schwartz, Kenny Bartkiewicz, Nina Caliendo, Clayton Callaway, Tiffany Truong, Katarina Surjancen, and Mary-Terese Tamondong. Also, many thanks to the fifth graders in the Religious Education Program and Principal Sandy Bays, Catechists Anna Marie Ciccone and Amy Valdez, Music Director Erin Lawrence, RE Children’s Choir, and Accompanist Mary-Terese Tamondong for their wonderful Stations presentation on March 12. Sometimes confusion results from not knowing all the facts, from twisting the facts, from denying the facts. Sometimes seeing and believing result from clarity of facts, personal experiences, and testimony of an eyewitness. In this Easter Sunday’s gospel, there is no clear announcement of Jesus’ resurrection; there is only an empty tomb. Without all the facts, the disciples “did not yet understand.” On this Sunday when the church celebrates the resurrection, this gospel passage includes the word

“tomb” seven times. “Tomb” speaks to us of death and finality, end and loss. No wonder Mary and the disciples “did not yet understand” when they found the tomb empty. They had no experience of someone rising from the dead, to die no more. Before they could see, believe, and announce the risen Lord, they needed an encounter with him. Our encounters with the risen Christ come in many and varied ways and times. We encounter him in the personal holiness that shines in the face of faithful disciples, in the good deeds done in Jesus’ name, in the community of the faithful who seek to live in the Gospel. Like the early disciples, these encounters lead us to believe what we don’t always fully understand: that Christ has risen, that he is present within and among us, and that his resurrection is a pledge of our own share in his glory. WEEKLY OFFERTORY The offertory collection for March 12/13 totaled $12,551.

492 envelopes were used for an envelope total of $11,158. Loose offertory totaled $1,393. May God bless you for your generosity.

The budgeted offertory for each week is $14,808. This week’s collection was $2,257 below that goal.

Alleluia! Happy Easter! The Son is risen and brings light into our lives and

world. “In the tender compassion of our God the dawn from on high will shine upon us.” This passage is taken from the Canticle of Zachariah, the gospel canticle of Morning Prayer, and foretells the fulfillment of God’s promise of redemption for all mankind. Through the Passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus we are all reconciled to the Father by the Son’s obedient action. The door to salvation has been opened for us to walk through. We all need to be reconciled over and over again, as we wander in and out of God’s presence—but the door he opened always remains open! Last night at the Easter Vigil, Laura Chairez received the Sacrament of Baptism; Michael Morris, Wally Camis, Jose Eduardo Vargas, and Stephanie Kuti were brought into full communion with the Church through the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist; and Nicole Haralambopoulos made her Profession of Faith These six people journeyed through the RCIA process so they may also benefit from the new life in Christ, which we already enjoy. They are now fully-initiated members of the faith we all share. Yesterday they received all that God offers us every day as the beloved children of God who live in the light of his truth. Please pray for them and all who were received into the Church this weekend. I pray that the joy of the Resurrection may always be with you. Happy Easter!

What questions do you have about the Catholic faith? Please send your questions to Carol Schubert by calling 630-628-0900 x104 or e-mailing [email protected]. What does the Nicene (Nicene-Constantinopolitan) Creed say? I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the

Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. Let both the Apostles’ Creed and Nicene Creed be a mirror for you. Look at yourself in it to see whether you really believe all that you claim to believe. And rejoice every day in your faith. (St. Augustine) No man lives alone, no man believes alone. God speaks his word to us and in speaking it calls us together, creates a community, his people, his Church. After the return of Jesus to his Father the Church is the sign of his presence in the world. (St. Basil the Great)
