Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time – In today’s first reading (Ezekiel 2:2-5) the Lord warned Ezekiel, “I am sending you to a people hard of face and obstinate of heart.” Last week, despite the apparent hopelessness of their situations and undeterred by ridicule, two people who did not know Jesus well, Jairus and the woman with the hemorrhage, had faith. But today, in Jesus’ hometown syna-gogue, lifelong neighbors do not believe, asking five questions in just two verses: “Where did he get all this? This wisdom? These mighty deeds? This carpenter? Mary’s son with his family?” They stumbled (literally, in Greek) over Jesus’ ordinariness, unable to see in Jesus, God’s kingdom dawning before their eyes and embracing people far beyond their synagogue, their town, even beyond Israel. Mark shockingly declares Jesus powerless, “not able to perform mighty deeds there” because of “their lack of faith”. In Ezekiel’s words, how obstinate our hearts can be! How often we fail, or even refuse to see others as bearers of Christ’s presence, dismissing others as incapable of being or becoming anything be-yond what we think they are, limiting their God-given potential to what we already know about them. Also, considering Ezekiel’s prophetic mission, how lacking in courage our faith can be! And yet in the 2nd reading, how comforting Jesus’ words are to Paul and to us – “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.” Paul’s response is “When I am weak, then I am strong.” Happy Independence Day! – from the Roman Missal, when this holiday is celebrated on a day, other than the Lord’s Day: Father of all nations and ages, we recall the day when our country claimed its place among the family of nations; for what has been achieved we give you thanks, for the work that still remains we ask your help, and as you have called us from many peoples to be one nation, grant that, under your providence, our country may share your blessings with all the peoples of the earth. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with your in the uni-ty of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Please remember to pray for continued freedom of religion in our nation. Next weekend is the Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The readings at Mass will be taken from Amos: 7:12-15; Ephesians 1:3-14 or short form 1:3-10; Mark 6: 7-13. The Knights of Columbus will be selling NFL Football Pool books for the next two weekends before and after the Masses. For further information, please see the poster board in the gathering space of the church. The Forward With Christ Building Campaign update – for a much needed Activity & Education Center – to date we have $1,679,881.19 in the bank with a remaining $413,390.89 in pledges. Thanks for your sacrificial support. The update of the membership of our registered parishioners – if you received the “follow-up letter”, dated June 11, 2021 and you wish to remain a registered parishioner of St. Philip The Apostle Catholic Church, then be sure to respond by Friday, July 23rd. If you are not registered in the parish, than we recommend that you see Father Kessler or call the parish office, so that you can get registered. Congratulations! – Friday, July 9th marks eight years since I ar-rived as your pastor – and amazingly, you have survived J. This parish marks the longest assignment in my 37 years of priesthood. As I begin my 9th year here in wonderful Statesville, I pray that with God’s blessing, and that of our Bishop, along with good health and the support of the faithful of the parish, that I may continue for 4 more years until the retirement age of 70 years old. God’s will be done. Thank you for your patience and prayerful support.
