Eighth grade students and families of St. Philip’s, along with some catechists and staff, will sleep outside overnight on Saturday, November 2, to raise awareness and funds for Bridge Communities which provides services for hundreds of homeless families in DuPage County. Volunteers are needed to cook and serve soup and bread on Saturday evening, cook and serve breakfast at 6:00 a.m. on Sunday, November 3, and collect donations after Masses on the weekend. If you would like
to volunteer for any of these opportunities--or if you would like to sleep out with us, please contact me. Volunteers who are over 18 years old must have completed a Protecting God’s Children Session. If you would like to make a donation by credit card, please visit http://www.bridgecommunities.org/group103. Please make donation checks payable to Bridge Communities and drop in the offertory basket with Attention: Nancy McKnight on the envelope. Some biblical scholars have viewed the second letter of St. Paul to Timothy as a farewell letter from the imprisoned apostle to his dearest and closest collaborator. In it, Paul encourages and exhorts Timothy to continue on with the mission of preaching the good news of Jesus Christ. In today’s second reading Paul is clear: “[P]roclaim the word; be persistent whether it is convenient or inconvenient.” We see examples of this very persistence in today’s first reading and gospel; Moses, with the help of Aaron and Hur, keeps his hands raised throughout the daylong battle with Amalek;
the widow in Jesus’ parable continues to pester the unfeeling judge to render justice for her. In these times when we are tempted to give up it is helpful to “step back and take a long view,” as Bishop Ken Untener wrote in his well-known prayer inspired by Archbishop Oscar Romero. He counsels, “We accomplish in our lifetime only a tiny fraction of the magnificent enterprise that is God’s work. Nothing we do is complete, which is a way of saying that the Kingdom always lies beyond us.” Let us pray always for the persistence to continue building this magnificent kingdom, even when the reality of it lies beyond us. Do you have questions about the Catholic faith? Send them to Carol Schubert for answers… How does God help us to be free men? Christ wants us to be “set free
for freedom” (see Gal 5:1) and to become capable of brotherly love. That is why he sends us the Holy Spirit, who makes us free and independent of worldly powers and strengthens us for a life of love and responsibility. [1738-1742, 1748]

“All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for refutation, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that one who belongs to God may be competent, equipped for every good work.” This passage from today’s Mass reaffirms that the words of the Bible are more than just stories of people that lived long ago but a basis for living in the ways of God. When we hear the scriptures proclaimed we hear the words of God--words that bring hope consolation and peace. If you are like me,
reading the Bible was not encouraged when I was growing up. It just was not something we did. It was not until I truly felt the need to have God close to me that I even thought about opening it up. When I did, it reached my heart and gave me a new awareness of God’s presence. The most amazing aspect of this wonderful collection is that no matter what time in history the words have relevance. It is a living document given out of love so we can all come to know why God created us and why he chose to live among us.

In the Exodus story, Moses needs help to be constant in prayer. Throughout St. Luke’s gospel, Jesus prays early and often, alone and with others. Like Moses on the hill and like the
persistent widow in today’s parable, no weary praying is faithful praying. With whom will I pray for the benefit of others? If I don’t, how and when will I pray every day? If I do, how will I continue? What help do I need to be persistent in prayer?

Baptism Information: Baptisms are celebrated on the second & fourth Sunday of each month. A pre-Baptism program must be attended by the parents. Please call the rectory to register for a program. Marriage Information: Please call the rectory to make arrangements at least six months (a year is preferred) in advance of the wedding date. It is recommended you do not rent reception facilities until your wedding date is confirmed with the pastor. Your preferred wedding date may be unavailable, and we do not want you to lose your deposit with the reception venue. Parish Registration: New families are welcome and are asked to register at the rectory. Also, previously registered parishioners are asked to notify us of any address changes. Emergency Sick or Anointing Calls: Please notify us immediately of any serious illness in your family. If you have a hospitalized loved one who would like a visit, please call the rectory with contact information since the hospitals and hospices no longer notify parishes. Please do not wait until the last minute to have someone anointed. There are always accidents/emergencies, but sometimes there is less panic when the anointing can be done prior to someone passing.
We now have available low-gluten hosts which make it possible for people who have celiac disease or allergies to wheat or gluten to be able to receive communion. If you have celiac disease or an allergy to wheat or gluten, please let us know before Mass so that arrangements can be made
for you to be able to receive communion at Mass.
