from the pastor…

Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time – Are you the suf-fering servant descr ibed by the great prophet Isaiah in to-day’s first reading (Is. 53:10-11)? Do we have a tendency to fre-quently whine and complain? Do we come across to our friends and loved ones, as if we think that we are the suffering servant of Isaiah? Or is the suffering servant really Jesus – or Lord and Savior? In today’s Gospel James and John ask Jesus “Grant that in your glory we may sit one at your right and the other at your left.” Jesus responds by asking them “Can you drink the cup that I drink or be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” Can you suffer as I suffer? Note that this episode follows Jesus’ third prediction of his pas-sion. How remarkable that James and John still fail to grasp the nature of Jesus’ mission and ministry. Nor do the other ten, giv-en their jealously indignant reaction. So Jesus summons them again to teach them what discipleship is all about. “To be great, be a servant; to be first, be slave to all; not to be served but to serve.” Today we observe World Mission Sunday. May we con-form our lives to the mission of the suffering servant of Isaiah - Christ our Lord. Welcome to Father Edward J. Sheridan who is cover ing our confessions and Masses this weekend. Father Ed is a very active retired priest of the Diocese of Charlotte. Father was ordained on May 23, 1963 and therefore has been a priest for 52 years. Father originally hails from New York City and is the son of Irish Immi-grants who made great sacrifices to give him a good Catholic education. Prior to retirement, Father Ed held many assignments including serving as pastor at St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Charlotte, St. Eugene Catholic Church in Ashville at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Hickory. Thank you Father for help and min-isterial service to our parish. Next weekend is the Thir tieth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The readings at Mass will be taken from Jeremiah 31: 7-9; Hebrews 5:1-6; Mark 10:46-52. Come prepared. There will be no 9 a.m. Mass this Monday (October 19th). Daily Mass will resume with the regular schedule this Wednes-day, October 21st. October is the Month of the Holy Rosary. Thanks to those who participated in the Living Rosary last Sunday. When pray-ing the rosary, be sure to meditate on the Mysteries of the Rosary. Pray the rosary! All Souls Remembrance – The names of our beloved deceased will be on the altar during the month of November. All Souls is Monday, November 2nd. There is an envelope in your packet of envelopes whereby you can note your deceased loved ones on the back. Extra envelopes can be found on the tables as you leave church. Donations are purely voluntary. The envelopes can be dropped in any collection basket during the month of October, but should be received by Sunday, October 25th or mailed or dropped off at the parish office by Friday, October 30th. The Priests’ Retirement Benefits Collection - Our assessment/goal this year is $15,182.23. So far we have collected $8,627.91. Any shortfall must come out of our general savings, which we have put aside as we plan to improve our classrooms, social hall, kitchen, offices, storage and parking facilities. Please be extra generous with this collection. As always, thanks so much.

Mrs. Mary Brown: If you need to contact Mrs. Brown, Faith Formation Director, please call or text 704-929-0152 or email her at [email protected] or if you need to contact Mrs. Norma Echevarria please call the office at 704-872-2579 or email her at [email protected]. Faith Formation students need to be picked up promptly at 10:15 am on Sundays and 7:45 pm on Wednesdays. We had multiple kids that were not picked up on time. Parents also need to be with their children at 10:15 am on Sunday mornings – whether they will attend the 10:30 am Mass or not. Children may not be left to wander around on their own. We will be celebrating All Saints’ Day in the Faith Formation classes with saint studies and projects. Parents, please ask your children what they are learning about saints. All confirmation students will need to choose saints’ name. The more saints they learn about, the better choice they can make. Saints are our models for how to live our Catholic faith.

Parents, please check with the FF office to make sure you have paid your children’s FF fees. We will be sending out letters soon. All students in sacramental years, first grade, second grade, eighth grade and ninth grades must get their mass cards signed. There will be someone, usually Mr. Parker, Mrs. Brown or Mrs. Echevarria in the lobby after Mass to sign the cards. Do not ask Father Kessler to sign the cards. Cards need to be com-pletely filled by the end of the year.
