Dear Parishioners, Our thoughts this weekend turn to our Founding Fathers who signed the Declaration of Independence from Great Britain. Those who signed knew that a war would be fought against the strongest nation in the world and that they were literally putting their lives on the line. If Britain prevailed, men like Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, John Hancock and George Washington would have been executed for high treason. Our Founding Fathers knew that Britain did not tolerate those who rebelled against their rule.
In the first reading from the Prophet Ezekiel, God refers to the people of Israel as a rebellious people, people who did not always follow His ways. Unlike human rulers who punish dissenters and insurgents, God is forever patient. Even when the people of Nazareth, Jesus’ native place, wanted nothing more to do with Him, God never punished nor abandoned His people. God has done much more than merely tolerate us since the beginning of time. He loved us before we were even created. Unlike our Founding Fathers who declared independence from Britain, we are encouraged to show our dependence on God by allowing Him to lead and guide us in His ways of love. In the Word,

CATHOLIC CHARITIES’ BACK-TO-SCHOOL FAIR NEEDS YOUR HELP! The Back to School Fair will be held on Wednesday, August 5, at the Odeum Expo Center in Villa Park from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. This totally free event is open to any DuPage County family who lives near or below the poverty level. Over 5,000 children and their families will receive a wide variety of health and human services, including dental and vision screenings. Catholic Charities, in collaboration with the Regional Office of Education, will also give each school-age child school supplies and/or a $10 certificate for the exclusive purchase of school supplies. Please help support of the annual Back-to-School Fair. The fair is a successful collaboration of over 100 public and private agencies dedicated to improving the needs of low-income families. We are great need this year as we have suffered quite a few budget cuts. It costs
over $30,000 to operate the fair, and we need your help to make sure every child is prepared for school this fall. DuPage County is the third most affluent county in Illinois which contributes to a widespread misperception that there is no poverty in DuPage County. In reality, over 60,000 persons have income below the federal poverty level. Please consider donating to the Back-to-School Fair. Your donation will allow Catholic Charities to purchase these school supply gift certificates for distribution at the Fair. Donations may be mailed to Catholic Charities Back-to-School Fair, 26 W. St. Charles Road in Lombard, IL 60148 or make your donation online at catholiccharitiesjoliet.org. If sufficient funds are raised in your area, remaining donations may be used to help children of low-income families prepare for a new school year at another Catholic Charities’ Back-to-School Fair within the Diocese of Joliet.
Catholic Charities is seeking volunteers to help with the fair on: • Tuesday, August 4, for set-up from 9:00 a.m. to noon or 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. • Wednesday, August 5, for the fair from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. or 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. To volunteer or for more information, please call 630-495-8008 x2122 or e-mail [email protected]. Our own “mighty deeds” which bring forth faith in others lie in our doing our daily tasks the best we can, accepting others for who they are, being patient with other’s responses to us. We may not do the “mighty deed” of healing the sick, but we can surely visit them and bring a word of hope. We might not all be theologians, but we can speak from our hearts the conviction of God’s word in Scripture which we’ve heard over and over again at Mass and in private prayer.
We are anointed prophets in baptism. We receive the wisdom of the Holy Spirit. We are empowered to do the mightiest of mighty deeds: be the Body of Christ, bringing Christ’s risen Presence to our broken world. What will people say of us? We will shock them into taking a second look at who we are only when we live as Jesus did—giving ourselves for others.

This weekend as we celebrate the birth of our nation and the freedoms that we
enjoy because of the men and women who gave their lives in defense of our country, let us also thank God for those who are currently serving in the Armed Forces to ensure that our freedom remains a cherished gift. Another kind of freedom can be felt by all of us each time we attend Mass and receive the Eucharist. Instead of many dying for our freedom from tyranny, one died to free us from sin. Our participation in the Eucharist allows us to experience the entire life and history of the Church, over 2000 years of endurance and triumph over sin—sin which takes away our freedom to be in union with God. We hear the Scripture accounts of brave men and women who stood up for the Kingdom of God, the kingdom that we are all citizens of by virtue of our baptism. At the moment of consecration we are at the Supper of the Lord with all Catholics around the world and all those in heaven as well. We are all part of something that is bigger than anything we can ever hope to imagine, the all-encompassing love of the Father. As you enjoy this Independence Day weekend, consider that every Sunday is in actuality our Independence Day for sin because of the One who chose to give his life for the life of the world.

Please give a warm St. Philip’s welcome to the following families/individuals who joined our parish community during the month of June:
Mr. & Mrs. Frank Faso, Vidales Family, and Aiardo Family
God describes the people to whom Ezekiel is being sent as "hard of face and obstinate of heart" (Ezekiel 2:4). They are a people who have rebelled and revolted against God, but still God persists in sending them a prophet: this time Ezekiel, last time Jeremiah, the time before that Isaiah, all the way back to Samuel and Nathan, Elijah and Elisha. Even today, God continues to send prophets to soften our faces and make yielding our own hearts. Jesus found hardened faces and stubborn hearts when he went to his hometown. Impenetrable seems to be the best description. His words could not get through. He was proclaiming the kingdom of God, the presence of God among them, and they couldn't hear him. It all depended on what they saw and all they saw was the carpenter, questioning where he got such wisdom and how he did these mighty deeds. He was just the son of Mary! We know the family. Go figure. And then we hear some of the saddest words in the Gospel: "So he was not able to perform any mighty deed there, apart from curing a few sick people by laying his hands on them" (Mark 6:5). Why? Their lack of faith. So Jesus started a new family. It began with the people whom we have been hearing about--the disciples, for all their struggles to believe in him right up to the very end, but also people like the woman with the hemorrhage, Jairus and his daughter, the man lowered through the roof, the fellow who had an evil spirit. The list goes on and on, down to our own day. By baptism, we became part of the family, the new family whose bond is not based on blood, but on faith. The ever-recurring question is: Is he able to work any signs among us, or is he amazed at our lack of faith?

This year’s Fortnight for Freedom to Bear Witness emphasizes the connection between religious freedom and bearing witness to the truth of the Gospel, keeping in mind the sacrifice of so many martyrs for the faith, both past and present. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has assembled resources to celebrate the Fortnight for Freedom at the website:
fortnight4freedom.org.
O God, who gave one origin to all peoples and willed to gather from them one family for yourself, fill all hearts, we pray, with the fire of your love and kindle in them a desire for the
just advancement of their neighbor, that, through the good things which you richly bestow upon all, each human person may be brought to perfection,
every division may be removed, and equity and justice may be established in human society.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God for ever and ever. Amen.
