From the Pastor’s Desk...

Jesus speaks in parables. He warns those who are in a position to guide others to take care to correct themselves, lest they be ridiculed; then He relates the parable of the decayed and good fruit: “every tree is known by its own fruit.”

The secrets of the heart are revealed by the words of the mouth. The first reading recalls the same adage about the tree known by its fruit: the way a person speaks reflects what is in the heart. Jesus often returns to the teaching about wisdom: at the core of all religion and relationship, below the surface veneer, the heart, the conscience, and the attitude is the font of good or bad things, and only God knows its secrets.

But, it is often easier for us to look outward rather than inward. The faults we most staunchly denounce are often those committed by others; the defects we recognize with more accuracy are those of our neighbor. Our most thorough and sincere examinations of conscience are often those that examine the consciences of others.

The temptations we face fearlessly, without yielding at all, are those that threaten the soul of our neighbors. Jesus commented, “Why do you notice the splinter in your brother’s eye?” What plank in my eye? I see perfectly well!

LENT BEGINS MARCH 6, 2019

You may wish to look ahead on your calendar for the coming 40-day Season of Lent. Listed below are a few important dates and events for the coming observance.

• Ash Wednesday Mass Schedule: The following Masses will be celebrated at both parishes, with the distribution of ashes to take place during Mass:

St. Philip the Apostle 9:00 a.m.Holy Spirit (all-school Mass) 1:15 p.m.Holy Spirit 7:00 p.m.

• Collection on Ash Wednesday is for the benefi t of J.O.I.N. in downtown Columbus. J.O.I.N. is the open-door emergency call-in center for folks who need help with various problems on a Columbus, city-wide basis. They can’t help everyone, but do provide effective “band-aids,” so to speak. This is a worthwhile collection, deserving your support.

• Second Collection after Holy Communion: This year, both St. Philip and Holy Spirit Parishes are going to assist the Piarist Fathers in Eastern Kentucky with their outreach needs for the poor of that area. There are few jobs and, for that matter, few Catholics, where Fr. Tom Carroll works. (He was our mission speaker last April.) The needs there are great, and this will help the Piarist Fathers to assist folks in the local area. The Second Collection will take place each Sunday of Lent after Holy Communion.

• Every Thursday Evening beginning March 14th, Mass will be celebrated at 7:00 p.m. in the Holy Spirit Day Chapel. This is an extra opportunity to attend Mass during Lent.

• Lenten Day of Refl ection: A morning of refl ection and prayer will be held at St. Therese’s Retreat Center on E. Broad Street, on Monday, March 25th, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Attendance and lunch are free of charge for St. Philip and Holy Spirit Parishioners, however, registration is required. Call Sr. Joan Popovits or leave a message for her at 614-861-1521.

• Lenten Friday Fish Fry Dinners: Dates for the dinners are March 8, 15, 22, 29, and April 5 and 12, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The dinners include choice of sides and dessert. A regular meal is $10.00; large meal, $12.00; kid’s meal, $6.00; family meal, $30.00 (2 regular and up to 5 kid’s meals). Beverages may be purchased for $1.00. Dine-in or carry-out will be available. The dinners are sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, Marian Council 3864 and Holy Spirit School.
