“The rosary is the book of the blind, where souls see and there enact the greatest drama of love the world has ever known; it is the book of the simple, which initiates them into mysteries and knowledge more satisfying than the education of other men; it is the book of the aged, whose eyes close upon the shadow of this world, and open on the substance of the next. The power of the rosary is beyond description” Archbishop Fulton Sheen (1894-1979)

Benedictine Monastic Week will be held July 7-15, 2012 at Queen of Angels Monastery. Offered for single Catholic women, ages 18-50, Monastic Week provides an opportunity to ex-perience the unique balance of prayer, work, rec-

reation, community and spirituality as it is lived out daily by the Benedictine Sisters of Mt. Angel. The experience is a great way to deepen your spiritual life and explore your call to monastic life. Call 503-845-6141 or email [email protected] for more info.

Fortnight For Freedom The fourteen days from June 21—the vigil of the Feasts of St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More—to July 4, Independence Day, are dedicated to this “fortnight for freedom” - a great hymn of prayer for our country. Our liturgical calendar celebrates a series of great martyrs who remained faithful in the face of persecution by political power: St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More, St. John the Baptist, SS. Peter and Paul, and the First Martyrs of the Church of Rome. Culminating on Independence Day, this special period of prayer, study, catechesis, and public action will emphasize both our Christian and American heritage of liberty. Dioceses and parishes around the country have scheduled special events that support a great national campaign of teaching and witness for religious liberty. If asked to list heroes of American freedom, people might reflect on the Revolutionary era and name George Washington, Nathan Hale and Betsy Ross. If asked to name heroes of religious liberty, they might go blank. Religious liberty heroes are many and not limited to the 1700s, according to scholars at the University of Notre Dame. They cited Thomas More and John Fisher, Catholics who were both martyred in 1535; Roger Williams, the Puritan founder of Rhode Island who was a 17th-century proponent of religious toleration; James Madison, an 18th-century Founding Father; and John Courtney Murray, a 20th-century Jesuit priest. Nor did they name only men. They also chose Saints Elizabeth Ann Seton and Katharine Drexel, as well as Mary Dyer, a 17th-century Quaker convert who was hanged by Boston’s Puritans for apostasy.

Joke For The Week Little Johnny had been exceedingly naughty so during dinner he was forced to eat alone at a card table in the corner of the room. When everyone was seated, his father bowed his head and gave thanks. Then little Johnny gravely bowed his head and prayed out loud, “Thank you, Lord, for preparing a table for me in the presence of my enemies.”

About our new Pastor

Reverend Rodel de Mesa was born in Bato, Catanduanes, Philippines in March of 1984. He is one of five children of Roger and Elena de Mesa. Rodel attended elementary school in Gigmoto, state of Catanduanes in the Philippines. He completed a Master of Arts degree and a Master of Divinity degree at Mount Angel Seminary in May 2012. Rodel’s ministry training assignments have included a pastoral internship at The Madeleine Parish in Portland, and clinical pastoral education at Swedish Medical Center in Seattle, WA. He was ordained a deacon by Archbishop Vlazny on May 21, 2011 at St. Mary Cathedral in Portland, and has served as a deacon at Resurrection Parish in Tualatin. Fr. Rodel was ordained to the priesthood at St Mary Cathedral June 9, 2012.

In Honor of St. John the Baptist

O glorious St. John, greatest prophet among those born of woman, although thou wast sanctified in thy mother’s womb and didst lead a most innocent life, nevertheless it was thy will to retire into the wilderness, there to devote thyself to the practice of austerity and penance; obtain for us of thy Lord the grace to be wholly detached, at least in our hearts, from earthly goods, and to practice Christian mortification with interior recollection and with the spirit of holy prayer. Amen.
