Homburg Academy Presents: Breaking Down Boundaries: A Cross-Sector Collaboration on Sustainability and “Smart Cities” Find out more at homburgacademy.org/sustainability Showcase your thought leadership and stay ahead of the competition. Business has an ever-increasing role to play in the emergence of smart cities worlwide. Ideas of urban sustainability that seemed unachievable only a decade ago have now become tangible through a variety of technological, infrastructural, and social innovations. Through the convergence of aspirations, needs, activities, and values of the inhabitants, local authorities, and businesses, the city becomes the driver of sustainable development and begins to shape to the urban landscape. In recent years, civil society has been active in redefining the idea of cities, while the voice of the private sector has remained largely on the margins. Now is the time for change; there is a need and opportunity for businesses across all sectors to define how they will help design the city of the future. We will be “Breaking down boundaries” between public sector, civil society and business; and between different functions of the city – from planning, property development, and transport, through to public spaces and the cultural metabolism of communities. You are invited to join Homburg Academy, in beautiful Prince Edward Island, Canada, on 14-15 September 2012 for this international and interdisciplinary conference that is certain to redefine conceptions of real estate as sustainable and responsible business. Showcase your thought leadership and stay ahead of the competition.

Contact us today to find out how you can become a part of this ground-breaking event!

Cross-fertilization of ideas from related disci-plines can not only contribute to the debate,

but advance the research agenda in new ways by asking innovative questions. ‘Real Estate’ is a process that begins with urban

planning, and extends through architecture and design, and building and construction, and business decisions are influenced by

financial incentives and available materials and technologies. Real Estate inherently

involves a host of professions. This confer-ence is designed to encourage thinking

about sustainability as a process that reaches across disciplines. While disciplinary bound-aries are required for ‘discipline’ in the truest

sense, cross-cutting issues like sustainability demand that these do not impose barriers to thought. This conference is designed to bring the disciplines together for sharing of

perspectives and ideas, and to stimulate new and innovative research agendas.

What is Not Being Asked?

Green and Sustainable:Fad, Fantasy, or Future?

As evidence about the business case for higher profits from green certified buildings continues to mount, professional interest in sus-tainability as a driver of profitability and brand value in the real estate sector continues to grow. Yet, critic-ism and debate continues. Skeptics argue that green building codes and carbon emission offsets are not a panacea, but often detract from efforts to address underly-ing environmental and social challenges at an urban level. Examples include persistant slums, aging populations, and ongoing environmental degradation – challenges exacerbat-ed by how our cities are currently designed. Others suggest that real estate sustainability initiatives should go further and should be informed by a holistic understanding of the intersections between economic, social and environmental realities as we anticipate a future that is resource-con-strained, densely populated, and urbanizing at an accelerat-ing rate. As more companies adopt sustainability programs, it becomes ever more important to address these concerns through new agendas that pose new questions. The con-ceptual tools and definitions of real estate sustainability continue to evolve, as evidenced by changes to ‘LEED 2012’. Ultimately progress depends on ongoing dialogue for the growth of knowledge and the evolution of norms. Such dialogue should include diverse disciplines, actors and stakeholders in the real estate sector.

Beyond Green Buildings – innovations in sustainable infrastructure

Green buildings are an invaluable addition to the sustainability of the built form of cities. However, city leaders have a responsibility for the sustainability of the whole urban fabric – roads, transit, water and waste water facilities, parks and protective services – to name a few. And, they are seeking to optimize the social, environmental and econom-ic bottom lines of the city’s infrastructure investments. This panel will provide specific, practical examples of how cities are collaborating with other sectors and their communities to create sustainable infrastructure. The panel will feature infrastructure case studies from 4 cities.

WorkshopSaturday, September 15Sustainability and Corporate Responsibility Sustainability is the new business opportunity. Join Homburg Academy for an intensive workshop that explores frontiers of business management through deeper under-standing of social and environmental trends. Learn skills for innovation in business leadership, services, products, and investments.

While the ‘Green Building’ movement is a notable and visible aspect, it is only one side of a much wider approach to business sustainability that generates employee motivation, customer loyalty, and investor returns by offering business solutions to environmental and social challenges. Sustainability also takes business into a space of creative cooperation with other stakeholders to solve shared problems. In real estate, this means an exciting new understanding of cities and communities - the enabling substrate for business profitability in the 21st century.

Through Homburg Academy, participate in this cutting-edge workshop as an inter-national expert guides participants in how to integrate sustainability into business through effective stakeholder engagement, corporate strategy and systems, explora-tion of new business opportunities, and communication for increased public trust. Join Louise Gardiner, a former World Bank officer with experience assisting companies and investors in China, Brazil, India and South Africa to unlock business value through corporate sustainability.

TourFriday, September 14

This tour will feature two impressive “green” buildings in downtown Charlottetown.

Holland College’s newly-designed Centre for Applied Science and Technology, is an impressive example of how to mix old style with new technology. The building features the latest in energy efficiency systems and will serve as a lab for students studying these technologies. Behind the architecture lies a unique infrastructure built on renew-able energy and sustainability, with 95 percent of the building’s heating and cooling functions powered by solar and geothermal sources. It uses solar panels on one wall and on the roof to heat the building and generate electricity. The rooftop solar panels will share space with plants to make the entire roof “green,” and large holding tanks are in place to catch and recycle rainwater for use in the washrooms.

The Jean Canfield Government of Canada Building in Charlottetown, P.E.I., completed in 2008, is a $53.8 million dollar project and one of the most environmentally friendly buildings ever constructed by the Government of Canada. Features of the new building include a reflective roof to reduce building heat absorption, an effective use of light and shade to moderate indoor temperatures, and the reuse of recycled rainwater to reduce water usage. Green power for the building is purchased from provincial wind turbines, which results in lower emissions and a smaller environmental footprint.
