Whilst you’re not at school, try to do something to help your brain every
day
When the World Turned Upside Down
Circle all the adjectives (describing words), connectives and rhyming words in different colours.
The day when the world turned upside down: when a frown became a smile and a smile became a frown. When the mice chased the cats the cats chased the dogs. The dogs laughed out loud at the pink and yellow frogs. When you went to bed in the daytime and got up at night. When birds caught the school bus and the cows took flight. When the moon came out in the middle of the day and all of the ocean's fish rolled around in the hay. When the children ruled the world and ice cream was for free and the elephants shrank to the size of a flea. When the grass rained lollipops up to the sky. When you wanted to laugh but could only cry. When magic beans were real and giants very small, you would eat spiders legs so you could creep up the wall. This all happened when the world turned upside down after I went to bed with a smile - not a frown.

Scan Scan Roll
You will need a book and a dice (if you don’t have a dice you will find instructions to make one in this booklet). Roll the dice and scan your book for the things below. Write your answers and see how many you can get.
Roll a 1 – Scan for names
Roll a 2 – Scan for interesting adjectives (wow words)
Roll a 3 – scan for illustrations
Roll a 4 –scan for tricky words in the chapter
Roll a 5 – Scan for interesting punctuation - ! ? ; : ”
Roll a 6 – Scan for common words and write the page number and line number
Word Wizard Look for special words in the book
you are reading.
Words that are:
• new • different • funny • strange • difficult
Record in your jotter:
Word Page What it means
Challenge: Add why you chose that word and find a synonym from the thesaurus.
Artful Artist Draw anything about your book that you liked.
It could be:

happen next

Challenge: Label your picture with evidence from the text.
Reading Journal Activities
List the main events in the story
Using ideas from the text, make a true of false quiz
for a friend.
Write and perform a short play based
on the story
Design a new front cover for the story.
Using speech bubbles, write a
conversation between two characters.
Think of a new title for the book
and write why you chose it.
Make a cartoon strip of your
favourite part of the story.
Write a blurb for your story.
Make a poster to advertise your
book.
Do as many of these activities as you can in your jotter and tick them off as you complete them.
