The Character Attribute theme for the month of April is Inclusiveness.

This month also marks Earth Day, Day of Pink and World Autism Day. Students at

Chris Hadfield will have many opportunities to demonstrate inclusiveness towards their

peers and adults.

Students can show inclusiveness this month by: welcoming and engaging others; treating

others with respect and value; respecting others. It's going to be another great

month for our Hadfield Astros to reach out to others in a fair and equitable manner.

CHILDREN'S SAFETY FIRST! Parents, please help us to keep your children safe by following our school safety rules and discussing them with your children. Parents who use the Kiss ‘N’ Ride in

the mornings, please do not arrive until 8:45 a.m. as there is no teacher supervision until that time. It's great to see so many families walk

to and from school each day. Please remember to stay on the school

sidewalks and only cross at the designated crosswalks when entering and leaving school property Remember that the long driveway into

the school is for busses only Please be aware of students and families at all times when driving on school property. Thank you

NEWS FROM THE LIBRARY LEARNING COMMONS

April is bringing new books into our library, both for the school and for our students! Our second Book Fair will run from Tuesday April 24 until Friday April 27. Students and families are welcome to come and shop from 3 - 6 pm on Wednesday April 25, or during our Open House activities on Thursday April 26. Thanks to the support of our Astros and families, we raised almost $5000 during the Fall Book Fair. This went to buy hundreds of books for our library, and also towards some of the technology that all of our students have been using throughout the year as they visit for STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) activities. I know this Book Fair will be a huge success as well!

April is also the wrap up of our Silver Birch Express and Blue Spruce Reading programs. Our Grade 4 and 5 Silver Birch Express Club have been meeting to read and chat with Staff Experts. Thank you to all the teachers who have supported this great program and our students by joining our club! We will vote for our favourite title on April 16 and those students who have read 7 or more selected titles will be invited to the Peel Forest of Reading Celebration on May 18. All students from K - 3 will vote for their favourite Blue Spruce nominee in mid-April. Winners will be announced during our April 27 assembly. This month, students have been engaged in a variety of activities during their STEAM visits. Ask your child which one was their favourite: Dash, Stop Motion, Tennis Ball Tower Challenge, Origami or helping to dismantle a desktop computer!

As always, you can follow events on Twitter @c_hadfieldLLC.

Parent Council

Our final meeting will be on

Wednesday April 11th from

7:00-8:00 p.m. in the library.

We look forward to seeing everyone

again.

April 22nd is Earth Day Celebrated every year on April 22, Earth Day is the largest environmental event in the world. More than six million Canadians including nearly every school-aged child participate in an Earth Day activity in their communities. At Chris Hadfield PS, staff and students will be involved in a community clean up. The event will be organized by our student recycling team. The Earth needs our help all year long!

PIZZA DAYS

Pizza Days this month are on April 3rd,

10th,17th & 24th. Check your email for

when School Cash Online May pizza order

dates will be posted.

BEING ON TIME IS A LIFE SKILL

It is very important to be on time for school. It shows that you value school and

have a positive attitude towards schoolwork. When children arrive to school on time:

They do not miss out on instruction

They are not embarrassed by being late

They are more relaxed and ready to learn

When children are late, they become anxious, upset and it can be disruptive

to those students already at work. Please help your child(ren) get the most out of

their learning. LET’S ALL WORK TOGETHER TO HELP REDUCE THE NUMBER OF LATE STUDENTS AT CHRIS HADFIELD PS!

April is Earth Month Earth Month encompasses the international celebration of Earth Day on April 22, 2018. This is the most celebrated environmental event worldwide. Initiated in 1970, this event has been considered the birth of the environmental movement. Each year, more than 6 million Canadians join 500 million people in over 180 countries in staging events and projects to address local environmental issues. In Canada, Earth Day has grown into Earth Week and even Earth Month to accommodate the profusion of events and projects.

Chris Hadfield P.S. goes pink on April 11

On Wednesday April 11, 2018, Peel District School Board schools will recognize Day of Pink. Unlike Pink Shirt Day, which is meant to combat all forms of bullying, we celebrate Day of Pink in Peel to specifically combat homophobia and transphobia. “Equity and inclusion is something that all Peel schools teach throughout the year and discuss with students daily—it is embedded in everything we do,” says Peter Joshua, director of education. “Day of Pink is just one more way for us to ensure students and staff learn, work and develop in environments that are safe, equitable, inclusive, respectful and nurturing for all.” Day of Pink began when a high school student in Cambridge, Nova Scotia, was bullied with homophobic language because he wore a pink shirt to school. The next day, hundreds of students at his school stood up to bullying and wore pink to school to show their support for equity and inclusion. On this day, students, staff and families from across Peel may wear pink and participate in a number of activities.

ParentConnect

Online parent portal to access important student information

The Peel District School Board is excited to announce the launch of ParentConnect, an online parent portal to access important student information. The pilot program was introduced at select schools and phased in to all Peel schools on Feb. 23, 2018. What is ParentConnect? ParentConnect is a safe and secure website, created by the Peel District School Board, that acts as a single point to stay informed and to access all electronic services provided to Peel board parents and legal guardians. The parent-friendly website will allow you to:

view school-based alerts and information

access real time absence reporting

view current and historic elementary report card information

get up-to-date busing information

review secondary school credit history and diploma status

and more

To learn more about the benefits of ParentConnect, visit our school website or www.peelschools.org/parentconnect

Raising Resilience Resilience is an important part of well-being. It is being able to ‘bounce back’ from difficult times, setbacks, and other significant challenges. It includes being able to deal effectively with pressure, and get through tough times. Raising Resilience Tip: Accept children & youth for who they are Children and youth are more likely to be resilient if they feel accepted for who they are.

Acceptance means we must resist the temptation to judge and criticize. When people feel validated they feel worthy and valued, which means when they encounter setbacks they will have the confidence to try again.

Letting children know specifically what you love about them or why you are proud of them can bolster resilience.

“I am so proud of how you treat others with respect. The way you encouraged your

classmates outside the school this afternoon made them feel so special!”

Important changes coming to SafeArrival system in May 2018

The Peel District School Board is currently using the SafeArrival system by Synervoice Technologies. As Synervoice has been sold to West Communications, there will be slight changes to our SafeArrival system and how you will report your child’s absence from school. The phone number to report your child’s ab-sence will stay the same, but there are a few other changes. Beginning May 14, 2018, all elementary school parents/guardians need to report their child’s full-day absences, late arrivals and/or early departures from school via our new School Messenger SafeArrival system.

The phone number will stay the same: 1-855-209-6155

Website has changed to: go.schoolmessenger.ca

Download a new app: School Messenger App (from Google or Apple) (please be sure to delete the old Safe Arrival app after May 11)

Please continue to use our current Synervoice system until Friday, May 11, 2018. The new School Messenger SafeArrival will be live on Monday, May 14, 2018. Important to note: The transition to a new company and system will require parents to set up a new account with School Messenger SafeArrival as data will not be transferred from the old system to the new. More information on how and when to set-up your new account will be coming in the next month.
