St. Joseph School’s senior girls andboys basketball teams are again demon-strating support for good causes by wear-ing special accessories with theiruniforms. The girls are wearing pink socks

and the boys are wearingpink shoe laces to promotebreast cancer awareness. They’re also doing this tohonor the late StephanieShachmut, a high schoolreligion teacher who beatbreast cancer but passedaway from another illnessearlier this year.

This basketball tradition at St. Joseph goesback a few years when two studentsbattling cancer, Sarah Beth Briggler andTrey Hickey, were similarly supported. “Wedo this to show support and appreciationtowards cancer survivors and to help themfight what they’re going through,” seniorAndrew Beck said. Senior Drew Bates

expressed his thoughts on the teams’ tra-ditions. “When we’re on the court, we feellike they are with us,” he said. “St. Joseph isone big family, and everyone is here tosupport each other.” Sophomore HollyRega spoke for the girls. “We were inspiredby Mrs. Shachmut, and all women battlingbreast cancer,” she said.
