A ROOM OF THEIR OWNJust because your kiddos are underage doesn’t mean their rooms shouldn’t reflect their personalities . Whether you’re looking for something bold or classic, we’ve got three rooms t o inspire you.

STORIES BY MARGAUX ANBOUBA

BABY STEPS

W hen Dr. Nimesh Patel and Bina Palnitkar Patel were prepar-ing a nursery for the birth of their

first child, Lana, they wanted to create a retreat from the everyday world.

“We went with a classic and ele-gant look,” Bina said. “I love Pride and Prejudice, and the room isn’t very Victorian, per se, but we wanted elegant, soft whites and ivory with hints of blush. That way, if our next child is a boy, I can

just change out the pink and make the room work.”

With the help of Emily Johnston Larkin, of EJ Interiors, Lana’s nursery was perfectly poised for her arrival in August.

Some of the feminine details include Barbara Barry fabric for the curtains, gifts given to Bina’s parents to celebrate her birth, and vintage Balmain drawings from the ’60s. Larkin found the sketches at Round Top Antique Fair in Round Top, Texas.

“They are original sketches from the house of Balmain that were preserved

really nicely, so we found the colors to go with the theme of her room,” Bina said. “It’s also something that is girly, but not too childish. They are pieces that can fol-low her throughout her lifetime, when she is grown up and has a child of her own.”

Comfort was also an important ele-ment for the Patels when designing Lana’s nursery.

“You spend a lot of time in the nursery, so it’s somewhere that needs to be com-fortable,” Bina said. “When you are in there at 2 a.m. on two hours of sleep, you need something to relax you.”

Bina Palnitkar Patel was inspired by Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice when designing a nursery for her daughter, Lana.

FODDER FOR TODDLERS

W alking into Alicia and Adam Rico’s home is reminis-cent of the scene when Dorothy

discovers she has landed in the color-ful Land of Oz. One second you’re on a typical block in the M Streets, the next you’ve stepped into a candy-colored wonderland.

Vibrantly furnished, the Ricos’ home is a Pinterest junkie’s dream. The bedroom of their daughter, Dotty, is no exception.

“We have made quite a bit of the things in her room,” Alicia said. “I’m huge on Pinterest and draw lots of inspiration on it.”

Some of these items include the golden hobby horse above her bed (made with glitter and Turbo Tacky Glue), the latch-hook wall decoration, different pieces of framed artwork, and bookcase embellishments.

Alicia describes her daughter as “super goofy, crazy, and spastic with so much fun energy,” and her bedroom is intended to be a reflection of all that pizzazz.

“I just love the color peach,” Alicia

said. “I wanted it to be a little bit more fun, playful, and bright. Dotty loves pink shells, which are a similar shade as the room on the inside.”

In their professional life, the Ricos own Bows and Arrows, a floral and event design boutique.

“Adam and I both have degrees in painting, so our art background has helped with both the flowers and dec-orating our home.”

Another Pinterst-inspired detail in Dotty’s room is her custom-made sleigh bed, topped off with a quilt made by her grandmother and her first stuffed animal, Ziggy. The Ricos recently welcomed a new addition to their family, Olympia, so Ziggy has a new companion.

“We have passed him down to Pia, but Dotty likes to go back and steal him sometimes.”

Even though she’s only 3, Dotty has already started expressing herself cre-atively through her clothing choices and selecting the decorations for her bedroom.

“We take her to a lot of art galler-ies and museums, so when she likes things, we will get them for her if they aren’t too expensive,” Alicia said. “We like to let her pick things out.”

Cynthia Collins wanted to make sure that son Andrew’s room was a place that he and his friends would want to hang out.

TURF FOR TEENS

C ynthia Collin’s design shop Blue Print is effortlessly chic. Along with four friends and business partners, she has been furnishing the homes of Dallas tastemakers since 2010. So it makes sense that her Park Cities home would

be a stunning reflection of the store. This style has translated into her son, Andrew’s, room.

Furnishing the room of teenage boys can be a challenge — but Cynthia tackled it head on.

“The oversized orange London Map paved the way for the room design and color scheme,” said Cynthia. “I purchased it on one of my buying trips to the UK. I wanted a place for Andrew and his friends to hang out and pile up in.”

Even with an interior designer for a mother, Andrew still wanted to have a say in the furnishing of his abode.

“He has opinions! Orange is his favorite color, so we went with it.”

While the room is mature, there are still playful details throughout it.

With an underlying nautical theme, the room is predomi-nantly navy and white with punches of bright orange. The carpet, which is striped, is actually two different textiles Cynthia had sewn together. The giraffe photographs are a favorite detail of both mother and son.

“My dear friend and talented photographer Libby Goff took the whimsical shots of the giraffes in Africa above Andrew’s bed,” Cynthia said. “I love their funny faces and the texture they add to the room.”
