Receiving your financial support will help me to focus on what is important

to me: education and reaching my career goals. As a recipient of this scholarship, I am encouraged to

support others by contributing in return toward my community and to help

others succeed in achieving their goals.

3EXCELSIOR COLLEGE HONOR ROLL OF DONORS 2014–2015

Dear Friends,

As president of Excelsior College, there are few responsibilities I enjoy more than recognizing those who show a sincere commitment to what we are doing and those we are serving. During the past year, philanthropy has played a pivotal role in supporting degree attainment and ensuring the achievement of the College’s mission, lifting students over that most daunting of obstacles — the lack of financial resources.

We are grateful to our loyal alumni, trustees, friends, foundations, faculty, staff, and community and corporate partners for supporting the College’s work. You are an important part of the College’s efforts to continue as a pioneering, pace-setting institution that first and foremost serves those not well served by mainstream higher education. These post-traditional learners have always been Excelsior’s prime concern, our reason for being.

With nearly 5,000 graduates this year, Excelsior is a model for meeting the workforce needs of the 21st century at a moment when the national spotlight is focused on the ability of higher education to produce graduates with in-demand skills and competencies. Now, with that spotlight, let us continue to innovate, develop high-touch career-focused programs and services, and provide an exceptional learner experience from the first point of contact through the entire educational journey and beyond.

Thank you for your generosity and shared vision for Excelsior and our students. Together, our impact is multiplied!

Ever Upward,

John F. Ebersole, LPD President

4 EXCELSIOR COLLEGE HONOR ROLL OF DONORS 2014–2015

Here at Excelsior College, we are grateful for the consistent and generous show of support from alumni, staff, faculty, friends, and

organizations during fiscal year 2014–2015. Excelsior finished the year having raised over $506,000, which provides much needed financial resources to help our students succeed. For the adult learner pursuing a college degree, success isn’t always easy. Career and family responsibilities compete with study time. Financial obligations and limited income might restrict adult learners from taking the courses needed to complete their degree program.

A total of 1,852 donors made gifts that will transform and sustain a student’s efforts to complete his or her degree. Many of these gifts supported scholarships that were provided to students demonstrating financial need. Scholarships also offer students the encouragement to keep at it, to not give up, and to succeed in reaching their goal, as more than 155,000 Excelsior alumni have done before them.

The accomplishments that follow are made possible by the unwavering support of our donors, and ultimately have great impact on the success of students and the College’s ability to be a model for higher education in the 21st century.

The numbers referenced in this report are as of June 30, 2015.

Annual CampaignGifts to the Annual Campaign are vital to Excelsior achieving its mission to serve those historically underrepresented in higher education as they enable the College to be a cost-effective choice. Support for the Annual Campaign helps the College to continue providing opportunities for those pursuing their educational goals in a flexible, individualized manner.

■ The success of our Annual Campaign extends directly to the success of our students. $310,741 was raised in unrestricted annual dollars.

■ There were 332 new donors to the College (17 percent of all donors).

■ 713 donors joined the Purple & Gold Society, recognizing donors of three consecutive years or more.

■ Thirty-four alumni joined the Provost’s Circle, recognizing leadership gifts of $1,000 or more. They contributed $68,940.

Year-after-year, our most loyal and reliable alumni donors renew their support of Excelsior with annual gifts. We are grateful for their ongoing commitment to

helping students on their educational journey.

Endowment GivingEndowment funds support the educational mission of the College by providing a reliable source of funds for current and future use. The legacy of thoughtful donors becomes the basis upon which Excelsior will build its achievements in perpetuity. The generosity of Excelsior’s endowment donors is appreciated by generations past, present, and future.

Endowment giving experienced 12 percent growth this year, with giving to the College totaling $192,799.

Three new endowment funds were established, providing an essential and reliable source of funding for scholarships and program development at the College.

The Colonel William C. Lafield Endowed Scholarship FundJack M. Lafield, Excelsior College trustee, established this fund in honor of his father to benefit U.S. military servicemembers, U.S. military veterans, or members of their immediate families based on financial need.

Karl G. Lawrence School of Business Endowment FundKarl Lawrence, PhD, dean of the School of Business & Technology, established this fund for the purpose of offering scholarships and other programmatic activity support within the School of Business & Technology.

Dr. Richard L. Leveroni Endowed Scholarship FundThe fund was established by James McNerney in memory of Dr. Richard L. Leveroni ’79 to honor his long legacy as an educator and alumnus of Excelsior College. Scholarships from this fund will benefit students pursuing degrees in the School of Liberal Arts.

Giving Locally: Partners Contribute Record Amount for ScholarshipsWhile Excelsior’s reach extends internationally, we are proud to call Albany, New York, home. With 500 employees, more than 1,500 students and nearly 2,100 graduates in the area, Excelsior College shares a deep commitment to the region.

The Partners in Lifelong Learning event is a major way in which the College partners with the local community to raise scholarship funds that help students in the Capital Region and its neighboring areas, and across New York state. At this year’s event, Excelsior honored GE, celebrating its academic partnership with Excelsior and its active support of education for more than 100 years.

This year generated more than $120,000 — a new event record! Overall, in the 7 years since its inception, this event has raised more than $650,000 toward scholarships that help students in the Capital Region and beyond.

“As an adult learner and a working mother to my beautiful 5-year-old daughter, I can appreciate the struggles students experience with juggling commitments to work, school, and family, along with the additional financial stress students are under just trying to make everything work. Programs like these make the littlest donation go a long way with helping others achieve their dreams.”

- Amanda Passaretti ’12, ’15, Catskill, New York Partners in Lifelong Learning Scholarship Recipient

“I recall the financial challenges that I experienced as a student and wish to help deserving students avoid that roadblock in pursuit of their educational goals. Far too many capable, curious, and talented minds are not nurtured because of a lack of funding. In a wealthy country such as ours, funding should never be a barrier to education.”

- Karl Lawrence, PhD, Dean, School of Business & Technology

Faculty Development FundSupport for Excelsior’s faculty remains a top institutional priority. The College’s strong commitment to teaching excellence and advancement in the quality of online education is apparent. Creative initiatives and programs provide faculty with professional development opportunities and the resources, training, and support to ensure exceptional online teaching.

The Center for Excellence in Learning, Teaching and Assessment, for example, provides a portal for faculty resources to support teaching and professional development. Faculty Connects, the faculty blog, provides a forum for faculty to exchange and discuss best practices in online education. Other recent initiatives include a new faculty orientation course; teaching and learning resources and tutorials to foster student engagement, persistence, and retention; and the opportunity for funding for professional development activities. Since it was established in 2013, Excelsior’s Annual Campaign Faculty Development Fund has grown to $1,345 and has provided seed money for activities related to strengthening the teaching experience for the nearly 1,000 part-time faculty members who instruct Excelsior’s students. This year, contributions helped support the digital library and faculty development webinar series. This offers faculty access to best practices in online education from top experts in higher education across the country.

Lt. Col. Bryant A. Murray Veterans CenterSo much of philanthropy is based upon extending help to those who need it. That’s why the Lt. Col. Bryant A. Murray Veterans Center exists and is an integral part of fulfilling our commitment to those who have served our country. Excelsior supports veterans in their return to civilian life after military service.

In the past year, $11,472 was generously contributed through the Annual Campaign to the Veterans Center, aiding our ability to provide support and information to veterans and active-duty military, particularly around their educational needs. In addition to answering questions on Excelsior College programs, the Center brings together all the pieces — transition assistance, career resources, access to health and wellness programs, and support groups that are virtual and can be accessed wherever one is living. A webinar series covers suicide prevention, explanations of the various veterans benefit programs, and tips on moving into the civilian job market.

The Center has become a robust resource compendium that addresses the top concerns of veterans seeking educational growth. Coupled with the specialized services offered through the College’s Center for Military Education, the Veterans Center is an effective starting point for veterans to ask questions and receive answers to today’s challenges.

Thirty percent of Excelsior students are military servicemembers and another 10 percent are veterans. This population was well represented among those who received graduate awards in 2015. At left is U.S. Army 1st Sgt. Reinaldo Rodriguez, recipient of the Arthur J. Gregg Award, with his children and Lt. Gen. Arthur J. Gregg, U.S. Army (Ret.), the first chair of the Board of Trustees.

Robert E. Kinsinger Institute for Nursing ExcellenceLast fiscal year, donations were received from Excelsior College Trustee Emeriti Robert E. Kinsinger, MA, EdD, and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation to establish the Robert E. Kinsinger Institute for Nursing Excellence. And the past year brought the Kinsinger Institute from concept to reality.

■ Institute Director Dr. Barbara Pieper convened the first meeting of the Robert E. Kinsinger Institute Advisory Board that clarified the focus for the Institute, its audiences, and the content that would be appropriate to the Institute’s website. The Institute has become the virtual home for Excelsior’s academic nursing community in support of quality and excellence in nursing education.

■ National Nurses Week in May provided the platform for the Excelsior College School of Nursing Annual Educational Institute. This year’s program, The Power and Empowerment of Nursing, was cosponsored by the Kinsinger Institute along with Tau Kappa At-Large Chapter and Albany Medical Center. Sixty attendees traveled to Albany to participate while 14 participants from eight states connected online. In addition to graduate students from Excelsior, doctoral students from Binghamton University–SUNY were attendees and presenters.

■ The School of Nursing and the Kinsinger Institute have launched a blog, The Pulse, to provide a home for the exchange of ideas, faculty news, and best practices. Recent postings highlight the mentoring available to students who are veterans as they work toward bachelor’s degrees in nursing and adjustments to expectations in online courses that increase students interaction with material presented.

The School of Nursing An-nual Educational Institute, cosponsored by the Robert E. Kinsinger Institute for Nursing Excellence at Excelsior College, featured a full day of presenta-tions related to the theme The Power and Empowerment of Nursing. During the conference, participants viewed poster presentations contributed by educators, faculty program directors, doctoral candidates, and others on a range of issues related to nursing leadership.

The Institute has become the virtual home for

Excelsior’s academic nursing community in support of quality and excellence in

nursing education.

This scholarship will ease the financial strain that goes along with funding an education. It will help me place more focus on my academics,

which in the end will also allow me to do better things for not only myself,

but for my family. As [I am] an active-duty member of the United States

Army, education is a key to our overall success, both in our career progression

and personal growth.

– MEGAN G., GEORGIA RECIPIENT OF THE HAMILL SCHOLARSHIP

Your contribution is very much treasured and helped me make a

promise to myself, to you as a donor, and to Excelsior College: to put my best effort forward, even when I am

challenged to nights of no rest or setbacks; to learn from my obstacles;

and to someday provide a generous gift of my own to a student in need.

Thank you!
