Board Stands By Him i For some time there have been signs of trouble in the Western Asylum growing out of the fact thatDr McCormick was disposed to run the institution according t- his own ideas which did not at times coincide with the notions of troubled two weeks ago in- formal charges brought by W J Chiles and Mrs Chiles alleging that Dr McCormick had been guilty of immoral conduct with Miss Hannah York an attendant who has since married It was alleged that he spent several hours in a room on the fourth floor with Miss York the charges being based on this circumstanceI The following signed statement was given to the daily unday afternoon by lei > McCor ¬ nick Dr McCormicks Statement In view of the fact that reports ofcharges against me have ap- peared ¬ in the newspapers I deem it best to make a plain statement of the matters as far as toU9hed upo in the press dispatches and also inorder to show my reasons for courting and demanding an rove s ¬ ti ation and to explain why I have nf resigned as urgedby State 1nJ spector HTnes Wise Hannah York now Mrs C D Mason of Clinton Ind the attendant slandered by Chiles was in the asylum when I took charge my predecessor Dr T W Gardi ner of Madisonville Ky recom ¬ lado y of excellent character and a mqst efficient attendant I found her to be such and no reflection upon herj character had been heard from au source prior to Chiles mendacious assault On the day I called to see Miss York on business she had that morning in the presence of another attendant asked to have a consultation with me afterherdays duties were concluded at 3 oclock As I was going to be otherwise en ¬ gaged that evening I called at her ward and was told by the atten ¬ dant who had relieved her that she could be found in another at ¬ tendants room on the floor above I went to the room and held a con ¬ versation with Miss York lasting perhaps forty minutes She asked me not to allow her to be changed from the ward she then had charge of it having been proposed to trans ¬ for her on account of her efficiency to a ward id one of the cottages She also discussed the matter of quitting the usylum as she was I afterwards learned engaged to be married to C D Mason of Clinton Ind an attendant under the former administration Nothing occurred in the entire interview in any wise improper It was purely official aml relating to Miss Yorks busi- ness ¬ relations with the institution Any statement to the contrary is mendacious and malicious After learning of Chiles charges against me I laid the entire matter before the Board and asked an in vestigation and the Boaid officially requested the Governor to order a full legal inquiry This was not granted to- me Prior to this I had been in person to see the Governor When I returned Chiles accompanied by Dr W E Lackey first assistant physician went to Frankfort and both held an interview with the Governor A member of the Board at the same time called on the Gov- ernor and laid before him the reso- lutions ¬ adopted by the Board and told him that I was anxious for an opportunity to establish fciy Inqo cence The Governor told this en tleman that the charges against too It 1 I jtI 1 over the telephone he impressions I I Chiles and his wife Chiles had all along proven to be a source of I trouble in the asylum He had been disappointed because he was not given an office his wife being among my appointments as matron As no office remained for him he recn ommended to me by the men who are now trying to Secure my re- moval He displayed so much hos tility to me that I galled the atten- tion Inspector Hines to his atti ¬ tude and Mr Hines talked to hi in my presence and he agreed toi change his course and give me n further trouble I then gave him more desirable line of work and he expressed himself as satisfied This was not long after a vacancy had occurred in the supervisors office Chiles wanted this place bnt I appointed Dick Robinson of Bowling Greeione of Inspector way to prefer the false charges as above referred to About three weeks ago I obtained undoubted evidence that a con- spiracy existed to bring about my removal A letter addressed to Dr Lackey by Prison Commissioner Geo V Green was left lying in one of the public rooms of the asylum It urged Dr Lackey to stand firm and not weaken on his statements and McCormick would soon be out of the way I took the letter and confronted Dr Lackey with it and charged him with doubledealing and an unpleasant episode resulted in the presence of several vitnesses After a long talk over the matter we came to a friendly understand ing again and I again thought my troubles were to some extent over But was not allowed to rest This was just before Chiles and Lackey went to Frankfort After I dis charged Chiles the conspirators began anew and Inspector HInes appeared Wednesday with a re- quept for my resignation The advisory again the Board met and adopted still stronger resolutions and re ¬ newed the demand that I be given a chance to vindicate myself and show the motives behind the con ¬ spirators to get me out of the way I made a report to the Board ex plaining the imperative need of in vestigating the official misconduct of some of the very men who are persecuting me These matters and their own belief of the con ¬ spiracy existing were referred to in the second demand for an in ¬ vestigation III am notonlydesiroustoestablish- my innocence of the contemptible charge made against me for it not onlyaffects me and my family but that of a woman whose virtue has been her all but in order to show the infamous conspiracy which has been hatched against me It is in ¬ deed qp easy matjfer to slander tbe- roodtJ taand fatng fc pecially n in my f7b as long as justice sways the scepter f power in our old commonwealth I feel that a man who has his aW at stake ought to at least be allowed to confront his accusers and dis- prove ¬ their charges if in an oped tribunal they can find sufficient courage to thereinto furnish a copy of same to His lisscel lencywhich was there and whereas bestr uds tice of this request and whereas this Board is reliably informed that the Governor has requested the re ¬ signation of Dr K B McCormicki as Supt of said Institution and whereas it has corn to the acknowl- edge ¬ of this Board that Charges of a grave nature have been circulated against other officeva of said Insti ¬ tution and whereas said rumor against the said Superintendent and other officers have beta circu- lated ¬ through the entire community thereby injuring the Institution indirectly casting a reflection upon this Board and whereas this Board believes from all the facts it has been able to gather that said charges against said Dr E B McCormick are the result of a con ¬ spiracy to injure his character and compel his resignation or removal now therefore in view oi these pro ¬ mists be it resolved 1st That this Board believes said charges against the moral character of Dr E B McCormick to be false 2nd That in justice to this Board to the character of the lu stitution and its management au <S to all parties concerned we insist that a full and fair legal investiga ¬ tion of all the charges made against the said Superintendent and other officers be instituted by His Excel ¬ completionj tbe made3rd That the Governor be and he is hereby requested to with- draw ¬ his request or the
