Agenda

Dr. Karen Rowa, PhD., C. Psych

Dr. Rowa is a psychologist at the Anxiety Treatment and Research Centre and an Assistant

Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neuroscience at McMaster

University. Her research is focused on cognitive behavioral models and treatments of anxiety

disorders, with a specific focus on obsessive compulsive disorder and social phobias. During

the conference she will discuss the characteristics of hoarding, thinking patterns that lead to

hoarding behaviour, and strategies used to address hoarding cases.

Hamilton/Halton Gatekeeper Team

The Gatekeeper team has implemented a successful outreach program to address seniors living

with Diogenes Syndrome (self-neglect). The program strives to identify seniors who may be at

risk that predisposes them to squalor, severe self-neglect, and link them to appropriate

support services before crisis develops. During the conference they will educate the audience

about Diogenes Syndrome, provide practical tips on how to approach and engage clients, and

provide attendees with an opportunity to apply the skills they learn during the conference.
