WINNING SPINSONE TROMBONIST HONORING

the legacy of an illustrious forebearand another exploring new options in con-temporary compositions comprise thismonth's Winning Spins. Steve Davis, amainstay of the Big Apple's contingent ofneo-bop/hard bop mainstream, assembles aheavy-hitting sextet for his tribute to the"father of the modern trombone," J.J.Johnson. David Gibson leads a quintetfronted by trombone and trumpet in a pro-gram weighted heavily toward his knottyoriginals.

Say When, Steve Davis (SmokeSessions), is steeped in memories of thelate J.J. Johnson. Six of the pieces areJohnson's own compositions and arrange-ments; four others are standards done asarranged and/or performed by Johnson, and the one original is pianist HaroldMabern's "Mr. Johnson," a tune he wrotereferencing an intervallic warm-upJohnson used to play when Mabern was inhis band in the 1960s.

Along with Davis and Mabern, the stel-lar lineup of this CD includes trumpeterEddie Henderson, tenor saxophonist EricAlexander, bassist Nat Reeves and drum-mer Joe Farnsworth. They deliver a robustblend of hard bop drive and the melodicand harmonic subtleties that exemplifyJohnson's writing. Davis himself is a per-fect interpreter of Johnson, since what hesays about J.J.'s style also applies to his:"this tremendous, warm sound and clean, clear articulation and sophisticated har-monic ideas."

By using a frontline of three horns,Davis can employ Johnson's three-partharmonies and voicings: demonstratingjust how artful and engaging Johnson'swriting is for both listeners and musicians. The challenges and rewards of that writingshine through on tunes ranging from theoriginals "Pinnacle" and the soulfully tune-ful "Kenya," to brilliant hard bop-flavoredrenderings of the standard "What Is thisThing Called Love?"

Interpolating from a big band arrange-ment, Davis creatively scales down"Shortcake" while adding ensemble timbrewith Henderson's Harmon-muted trumpet.Mabern's "Mr. Johnson" has a gritty,down-home feel further emphasized inAlexander's guttural phrases, then echoedin the other horn solos.

Davis stretches out in quartet modewith gorgeous renderings of two ballads,Johnson's "Lament" and the standard"There Will Never Be Another You," moreoften played as a swinger in jazz. Two

minor surprises add variety and appeal to the program: John Coltrane's "VillageBlues," with that slow, loping rhythmmade famous by Trane's seminal quartet, and "When the Saints Go Marching In,"with a decidedly modern Johnson chartemploying very not-Dixieland polyphony;the solos, including Davis' with bucketmute, are taken at a bebop clip.

BOOM!, David Gibson (Posi-Tone), fea-tures a quintet the leader dubs The DG5tet. Its lineup features the growing-in-popularity double brass frontline withGibson's trombone joined by Josh Evans'trumpet. Theo Hill plays acoustic and elec-tric pianos, Alex Claffy, bass and KushAbadey, drums. Aside from the opening,"The High Road," in a fairly familiar hardbop vein with nifty turnarounds, the otherseven originals reveal a postmodern, beyond bop and swing sensibility. Gibson'stone and approach, unlike Davis' moreclassic neo-bop style, employ slippery runsas well as tonal gruffness and burlapvibrato.

"Rare Truth," the second track, isindicative of Gibson's gnarlier, labyrinthine inclination. Beginning withslow, stately long notes, it quickly shifts toa skittery uptempo strain, then the twotempos and approaches alternate through-out the track. Off-center rhythms and along meter feel with accelerating time, plus echoey electric piano, fuel "Grassfed,"with a high register trumpet solo matchedby fleet trombone slurried runs.

Back on acoustic piano, Hill evokesMcCoy Tyner on "Eyes of Argus" and therhythms from Abadey are highly chargedand sprung, like a tiger trying to break outof a bag, meshing best with Evans' crack-ling trumpet solo and Hill's powerful inter-play within his own solo. Slower originalsrange from a melodically waltzing"Persephone" and lush "The Dance" to thestrange, haunting "Empathy," with itssemi-rubato horn lines and slow dragtempo.

Electric piano returns on the CD titletune, another snappy theme with sprungrhythms and frisky horn solos. Roundingout the program are Tom McIntosh'salmost standard, "The Cup Bearers," and acover of Eric Clapton's 1996 Grammymulti-winner: "Change the World," as anaffectionate ballad.

Steve Davis plays with the DizzyGillespie™ All-Star Big Band at theBlue Note July 21-26. David Gibson's

OFTEN CALLED ONE OF THE LASTof the bebop pianists, Hod O'Brien

learned his jazz the old-fashioned way: onthe bandstand. Brief college studies werequickly dropped in favor of the life of aworking musician and by 1956, the twenty-year-old O'Brien was leading his own trioat a local jazz club in the Berkshires withvisiting musicians often featured asguests. By that time, O'Brien was alreadycompletely enamored with bebop, havingabandoned the more traditional jazz styleshe'd been practicing. Later that same year,O'Brien gravitated to New York City, theepicenter of jazz.

"When I first got to New York, I wasgoing around to the jam sessions and lofts,"he recalls on the phone from his home inVirginia, "and I was very cocky, as I'd putin lots of time practicing all the bebop licksof Bud Powell and Charlie Parker phras-es." At one jam, he sat in with TeddyCharles and the vibist was so impressed heasked O'Brien if he would like to be on arecording session (Charles was also anA&R man for Prestige Records). O'Brien'sdebut recording as a sideman resulted inthe LP Three Trumpets, with Art Farmer,Donald Byrd and Idrees Sulieman, a minorclassic he says sparks recognition of hisname from many of today's top trumpeterswho once studied it.

His bebop piano style was already fullyformed when O'Brien made that firstalbum and, over the many years since, he

has remained faithful to its basic tenetswhile developing and refining it. He saysBud Powell epitomized it, but he came tothe familiar concepts—long, often singlenote, right hand lines punctuated by inter-mittent chordal rhythmic accents from theleft hand—first through hearing Nat Coleon early JATP records and Billy Taylor.Besides Powell, he sites Al Haig and HankJones as two other older bebop pianistswho influenced him.

"The first time I heard a pianist doingintermittently placed chords was Nat Cole, who was a stylistic bridge between swingand bebop," he says. And of the bebopstyle, he continues: "Bird's and Bud's ideascome right out of Bach's concepts of devel-oping melodic lines out of chords, but witha different rhythmic feel."

O'Brien's command of bebop piano ledto his being hired by bassist OscarPettiford in 1958. "I call it one of my twodubious distinctions," he says. "Bill Evanswas Oscar's pianist in the band, butPettiford wasn't happy with Bill's compingand time feel. So [trumpeter] Red Rodney, who was in the group, recommended meand I replaced Evans. My other dubiousdistinction was coming in ahead of BillRodgers in a ten-mile race in New York, just a week after he had won the BostonMarathon. I heard all this applause as Icrossed the finish line and then realized itwas for Rodgers, who was right behind me."

Pettiford became what O'Brien calls his"first jazz mentor," while Evans, alongwith McCoy Tyner, became two of the mostinfluential post-bop jazz pianists of the20th Century and two of the principal rea-sons so few practice the pure bebop style ofpiano today.

O'Brien's other main jazz mentor wastenor saxophonist J.R. Montrose, probablybest known for his work on CharlesMingus' classic album PithecanthropusErectus, who spent most of his career play-ing near his home in upstate New York."J.R. was one of the most impressive cats Iknew," he says, adding, "as was [alto saxo-phonist/arranger] Gigi Gryce, whose musicI loved." Other musicians he worked withand admired over the years include trum-peter Chet Baker, saxophonists PhilWoods, Stan Getz, Zoot Sims, Al Cohn andWarne Marsh and guitarists Ted Brownand Joe Puma.

In the 1960s, he gave up jazz to studymath and psychology, earn a degree andwork as a research assistant, beforereturning full time to jazz in 1974. Sincethen he's worked regularly, traveling fre-quently to Japan, where his pure bop styleis greatly appreciated. He's also workedwidely, including at resorts in Virginia, with and without his wife, the singerStephanie Nakasian, whom he first met in1980. He's looking forward to reuniting

23Coltrane photo by Michael Weintrob.

WHEN HE CAME TO NEW YORKfrom California in 1991, saxophonist

Ravi Coltrane could have traded on hisfather and mother's brilliant legacies.Instead, with humility, patience and anuncompromising commitment to excel-lence, he is known today as a serious andcelebrated musician on his own terms. Thefact that he's only released six CDs—Moving Pictures, From the Round Box,Mad 6, In Flux, Blending Times and SpiritFiction—from 1998 to 2012, proves that, for him, it's about quality, not quantity.

"To make a record because you can, forme, is not enough of a reason to make arecord," he says with a laugh. "I needsome ideas and motivation and a littleinspiration."

The 49-year-old, Long Island-bornColtrane has plenty of inspiration to drawfrom, as evidenced by the wide-rangingand eclectic assemblage of musicians he'sworked with—from Steve Coleman, ElvinJones, Geri Allen, Jack DeJohnnette andMcCoy Tyner, to Terence Blanchard, JoeLovano, Joanne Brackeen and DaveLiebman—along with the vivid and variedensembles he leads.

His latest group is his Guitar Quartet, formed two years ago and composed of gui-tarist Adam Rogers, bassist Scott Colleyand drummer Nate Smith, "These guys areplayers that I've known for decades," hesays. "Scott Colley and I went to the samemusic school, Cal Arts. And I've been play-ing with Nate Smith in many different con-figurations. Adam Rogers is one of myfavorite musicians of all times and he's oneof my favorite guitarists. I wanted a bandof guys that I not only admire as musi-cians, but who I would also enjoy hangingout with. There's definitely something tobe said for that type of camaraderie. Itreally gets into the music."

For Coltrane, the guitar gives himanother unique sonic palette for his mov-ing and melodious soprano/tenor sax linesto swoon and soar over. "You get two forone," he says. "It feels like you're playingwith another melodic line player, likeanother horn player. And you also get therichness and harmony available as if youhad a piano there."

The rich harmonies radiating from thisfoursome manifest themselves in a number

of original compositions by the leader andby his bandmates, along with selectionsfrom a dearly departed jazz immortal.

"From this day on, you'll most likelyhear a lot of Ornette Coleman's music,"Coltrane says. This interview took placehours after Coleman's death was reported. And Coltrane, who recorded two Colemancompositions, "Check Out Time" and "TheBlessing," speaks beautifully and emphati-cally on Coleman's galactic influence. "It'sfunny to speak of him in the past tense, soI won't," he says, with a mixture of rever-ence and regret. "Ornette is a completeoriginal: a total original. And he's fearless. What he did in New York in the late '50swas miraculous. To come up with a brandnew conception, with those incredible like-minded individuals—Billy Higgins, andCharlie [Haden] and Don Cherry—theywere complete originals. There is no onelike him."

Coltrane's passion for Coleman ismatched by his life-long exploration of hisfather’s music, along with other saxophonecolossuses including Wayne Shorter andJoe Henderson. He studied them when hewas growing up near Los Angeles, wherehe lived after his father died in New Yorkin 1967. The youngest of three children(his brother, John Jr., died in a car crash in1982), Coltrane credits his mother as thedriving force that made him the humanbeing and musician he is today.

"I learned a lot from her," he says, "howshe interacted with people and what shewas able to do as a musician. I was veryfortunate to receive the things that I didfrom her. And making that albumTranslinear Light was something Idreamed about for years. My mother hadretired from music before I began my musi-cal journey. I'd say, 'Mom, please, we gottado a record!' She said 'No, I already did

DIANE MOSERCORNELIA STREET CAFÉ / JULY 5 and TRUMPETS / JULY 29Composer/pianist Diane Moser has been leading one of jazz's unique orchestras foralmost two decades. The 17-piece Diane Moser's Composers Big Band is dedicated toplaying new works and arrangements by its 11 members and guest artists. Thoseguests have ranged from Howard Johnson and Jim McNeely to Jane Ira Bloom andMatt Wilson. The DMCBB began performing monthly at Tierney's, then settled in itscurrent home, Trumpets, where this month's gig celebrates the band's 18th anniver-sary. Moser has also been composing chamber jazz pieces for her quintet includingBen Williams, trombone and Marty Ehrlich, alto sax/clarinet. Expect to hear musicfrom the quintet's latest recording, Music for the Last Flower, as well as Moser's newThe Birdsong Project at Cornelia Street Café. GK

BILL WARE MASTERS SCHOOL / JULY 8Whether performing with a jazz group, composing a symphony or experimenting withtechnology, vibraphonist Bill Ware demonstrates that innovation should be a constantspice in the jazz musician's cabinet. Whether as a leader or supporting acts such asSteely Dan and Groove Collective, Ware portrays the vibraphone as not just an instru-ment but rather an extension of his artistic prowess and musical curiosities. Sincecoming onto the New York jazz scene of the late 1980s, Ware has been a consummateforce showcasing the vibraphone as a premiere instrument of the jazz idiom. Ware'scolleagues have taken notice; guitarist Marc Ribot states, "Bill is one of the most tal-ented musicians I've ever known." For this Jazz Forum Arts event, Ware is joined bypianist Matt King, bassist Alex Blake and drummer Jaime Affoumado. EW

AMINA FIGAROVA THE SIDEDOOR / JULY 18 and FALCON ARTS / JULY 30 Pianist/composer Amina Figarova's musical output directly corresponds to her pas-sions. Equal parts Ellington and Rachmaninov, Figarova's compositions have a fresh,multi-genre feel that puts her in a class all her own. After stints at the Baku andRotterdam conservatories and Berklee College, Figarova's 1994 debut album,Destination, introduced the world to her refined and unpredictable post-bop styles.Appearances at the Newport Jazz Festival and the New Orleans Jazz and HeritageFestival showcased Figarova's prodigious character on a platform ripe with musicaltalent. Figarova's most recent recording is 2012's Twelve but she has a forthcomingrelease, Blue Whisper. She plays music from both with her husband, Belgian flutistBart Platteau, and a complement of American players, including trumpeter AlexNorris and drummer Jason Brown. EW

FREDDIE REDDJAZZ GALLERY / JULY 18Freddie Redd made his recording debut as a leader in 1955 yet the pianist has beenso sporadically recorded that, now in his 80s, he remains a talent deserving widerappreciation. Recognized for his intricate, challenging compositions and dynamicapproach to his instrument, Redd's best-known writing and performances were fea-tured in the play and the film The Connection, music that has stood the test of timeon its own merits. Bud Powell remains an influence in his style, though the New YorkCity native has evolved into a more subdued, reflective performer. Redd's new trio CDwith Jay Anderson on bass and drummer Billy Drummond is Music For You recentlyissued by SteepleChase, his first recording in more than a quarter century. KD

KATIE THIROUXJAZZ AT KITANO / JULY 22Following in the footsteps of Brandi Disterheft, Linda Oh and Mimi Jones, KatieThiroux represents a new wave of younger female jazz bass players. Based in LosAngeles, she trained on violin but swapped it out for upright bass, obtained opera pitjobs as a ten-year-old, and studied jazz with Tierney Sutton and John Clayton.Berklee College offered a scholarship; she graduated, taught at their satellite schoolin Ecuador, then completed a Master's degree at Cal State Long Beach. Her tightrhythmic underpinnings and solid sense of swing suggests West Coast cool influenceslike mentor Clayton, Leroy Vinnegar or Ray Brown. She performs music from herdebut CD, Introducing Katie Thiroux (Basskat) with woodwind veteran KenPeplowski, pianist Konrad Paszkudzki and drummer Matt Witek. MGN

L I G H TWAYNE ESCOFFERYGINNY'S SUPPER CLUB / JULY 24-25Tenor saxophonist Wayne Escoffery has been one of the giants among the young lionswho have emerged in the 21st Century. He combines an adventurous spirit, potentsongwriting and inventive improvising in his big-toned playing, occasionally doublingon soprano sax. Escoffery's small groups have been diverse, as demonstrated by hisbands for both nights at Ginny's. The first night band is Wayne Escoffery and Phenomfeaturing two promising young musicians: drummer Kojo Roney, the ten-year-old son ofsaxophonist Antoine Roney who has been playing in jazz ensembles since age four, plus12-year-old pianist Esteban Castro. The second night showcases his band Soul Stopwith guest Jeremy Pelt performing groove-oriented music inspired by Mwandishi, LeeMorgan, Miles Davis and Eddie Harris. KD

CHRIS WASHBURNE SMOKE JAZZ & SUPPER CLUB / JULY 29Trombonist Chris Washburne's SYOTOS Jazz Band has been pushing forward Latinjazz with elements of bebop, funk, gospel and contemporary classical music for 23 years. This evening celebrates the release of Low Ridin', their sixth CD, which features "acidmambo" versions of rock classics from the 1960s and '70s. One clever mash-up layersDuke Ellington's sacred work "Heaven" over Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven."SYOTOS includes Ole Mathisen, saxes; John Walsh, trumpet; Andre Mehmari, piano;Leo Traversa, bass; Vince Cherico, drums and Orestes Abrante, congas. The band namemeans "see you on the other side," which Washburne told them before his 1992 surgeryfor severe nerve cancer. Doctors said he had a 50/50 chance of surviving—and wouldnever play again. He sure proved them wrong. KF

JOEY ALEXANDERJAZZ STANDARD / JULY 28-29There are many examples of players who caught jazz fever from listening to theirfathers' record collections. Joey Alexander made that discovery at age six, then taughthimself to play the piano in his native Bali Indonesia and absorbed enough of the jazzcanon, musicality and spirit over the next four years for the movers and shakers in jazzto take note. He made his recording debut before turning 12 last month. My FavoriteThings (Motéma) reveals an intuitive player with keen improvisational talent, whetherplaying challenging standards or originals. Now based in New York, Alexander has afull summer schedule of club and festival appearances. For these two nights at JazzStandard, he's joined by his working trio mates, Russell Hall on bass and SammyMiller, drums. KF

KEN PEPLOWSKISMALLS / JULY 31-AUGUST 1Back in the Swing Era, tenor saxophonists doubled on clarinet, or vice versa. In thepost-bop era, the clarinet gave way to the soprano sax as a second for tenors, but KenPeplowski is one of a handful today who plays both instruments equally as well and asoften. Peplowski came up in the late 1970s and 1980s, playing in big bands, Broadwayshows and, as a clarinetist, in traditional jazz contexts. However, he's always been will-ing to expand his horizons. His 1998 album Grenadilla featured him interacting withboth trad/swing clarinetist Kenny Davern and downtown avant clarinetist MartyEhrlich. Besides his group gig at Smalls, Peplowski is part of the 92Y's Benny, Basieand Bucky, a salute to Benny Goodman, Count Basie and special guest BuckyPizzarelli. GK

KURT ELLING92Y / JULY 28"Frank Sinatra is American popular song. The voice, the phrasing, the attitude: thesequalities make him the single most important popular vocalist of all time," Jazz inJuly's artistic director and pianist Bill Charlap writes in the program for Swing a Songof Sinatra. Filling the shoes of Ol' Blue Eyes in this tribute is another singer with aunique approach to lyrics and, especially, swing: Kurt Elling. With a four-octave rangeand the heart of a poet, this charismatic performer will put his own stamp on Sinatra'smany hits. Joining Elling in the frontline for the Sinatra 100th birthday celebration iscornetist Warren Vaché and tenorman Harry Allen with bassist Peter Washington anddrummer Kenny Washington rounding out the rhythm section with Charlap. ANOTHER REASON TO CELEBRATEBy Elzy Kolb

The art of nowThe jazz world has had more than one

11-year-old piano whiz. Pianist/composer/educator Joanne Brackeen was giggingat that age and, over six decades later, con-tinues to play—and live—with an enviablelevel of intensity, freshness and enthusi-asm.

Besides writing hundreds of composi-tions and releasing dozens of albums as aleader, Brackeen has played, collaboratedand recorded with a litany of jazz giantsincluding Charlie Haden, Charles Lloyd,Pharoah Sanders, Woody Shaw, FreddieHubbard, Lee Konitz, Joe Henderson,George Benson and Dave Holland. She wasthe first female member of Art Blakey'sJazz Messengers and played with StanGetz from 1975 to 1977; Getz ranked heramong "the most original and creativecomposers" in his bands.

During Brackeen's tenure with Getz, they performed at Keystone Korner in SanFrancisco with bossa nova inventor JoaoGilberto, drummer Billy Hart and bassistClint Houston. "Todd Barkan recorded thewhole thing every night," she recalls.Brackeen is thrilled that two CDs of thoserecordings will be released on theResonance label in 2016: "Stan was a veryinnovative player, but I never heard anyalbums that are near what he did with ourband. These recordings are breathtaking;it was an unbelievable experience."

Her achievements have been recognizedwith numerous grants and awards, includ-ing the 2014 BNY Mellon Jazz LivingLegacy Award bestowed at the KennedyCenter; she's scheduled to play there inOctober, honoring this year's winner GaryBartz. Brackeen is also excited that she'sbeen asked to talk about her experiencesfor a Yale University oral history project.

However, she'd rather look ahead. "Ithink about today and what I'm doing. That's the only way the music we play inthe jazz world really exists—in the hereand now."

Brackeen's to-do list includes workingon a solo piano album, taking weeklyChinese language lessons; a fall sabbaticalfrom teaching at Berklee, during which sheintends to "write a lot more music;" and aLabor Day weekend gig at the Detroit JazzFestival with her quartet consisting ofRudresh Mahanthappa, Ugonna Okegwoand Matt Wilson. "They love playing mymusic," Brackeen says. "That's what Ineed, people who want to do somethingthey don't normally do."

The pianist will celebrate her 77thbirthday this month and when the subjectof retirement comes up, she quotes TonyBennett: "I've never worked a day in mylife." Brackeen continues, "I've alwaysbeen very involved, like any very hardworker, but it's all play, every minute ofit." She'll headline the Cambridge JazzFestival on her actual birth date, July 26,and will set off some musical fireworkswith a piano/bass duo at Mezzrow JazzClub on July 3-4. The bassist wasunknown at press time, but listeners cancount on hearing one of the greats.

Brackeen has a well-documented affini-ty with bass players such as Cecil McBee,Kim Clarke, John Patitucci and EddieGomez. "A great bass player is a necessity. You can go ahead and play what you wantand they can have a great time too," sheexplains. "Eddie Gomez is at the top of thelist of bass players. He's just like me—wedon't know what tune we're going to play'til we get out there. Then we hear exactlywhat the other one's doing and make ithappen." Count on hearing standards anda few originals at Mezzrow; birthdays arespecial days, but Brackeen makes it herbusiness to play as if every day is special.

New location, firm rootsWhen it comes to playing trumpet,

"The Chicago sound is engraved in myDNA," says Marquis Hill, the winner ofthe 2014 Thelonious Monk InternationalTrumpet Competition. "But if you playjazz, you've got to come to New York andstay for at least a while. It's where all thegreats are from and there's so much hap-pening here. You get different influencesfrom being here."

Hill recently moved from his hometownto the Big Apple and is enjoying exploringthe local jazz scene. "Spending time here islike going away to college; it's a beautifulthing. There are lots of places to go and Imake the rounds. I get out three or four

times a week, meeting people, jamming, setting up sessions. It makes me want tocome up with new music."

He recognizes differences between theChicago and New York sounds. "WithChicago, there's the history of the city, theAACM, a lot more influence of free oravant garde playing coming out of Chicago, which I incorporate in my music a lot. NewYork I think of as the new sound of modernjazz, it's big on original compositions andpeople writing music and stretchingboundaries. I like that a lot."

In fourth grade, Hill was introduced tojazz when his teacher, Diane Ellis, gavehim Lee Morgan's album Candy. "Thatrecord made me fall in love with thismusic. Diane Ellis is my first jazz hero, oneof the few elementary school teachers Iknow of with a heavy jazz curriculum. Shestill teaches to this day, gets 'em hooked tothe music really young." From that timeon, "I knew I wanted my career to be relat-ed to music. I had tunnel vision; I didn’tconsider anything else.”

By the time he was a high school sopho-more, Hill was jamming at Chicago venuesthe Velvet Lounge and the ApartmentLounge, with renowned saxophonists likeFred Anderson and Von Freeman. "Theyknew I was hungry for the music and theylet me in," Hill recalls. "My mother, a sin-gle parent, saw I loved it. She went with itand supported me from the start."

Among his other influences, Hill citessaxophonist Ronald Carter, with whom hestudied music education at NorthernIllinois University, before going on to earna Master's in jazz pedagogy at DePaul. "Imet Professor Carter really young, heinspired me, I still have the passion forteaching he instilled." Eventually, Hillhopes to set up a studio for teaching pri-vate lessons.

Marquis Hill, Minton’s

band for his gig at Minton's on July 23."I'm excited. This is my first opportunity toput together a New York band and writesome new arrangements for it. It's excitingto hear new musicians approach yourmusic from a new standpoint."

Many sides, many soundsOn her new CD, Inner Dialogue

(MusiqHaus), singer/composer SarahElizabeth Charles delves into a varietyof influences. "I'm pushing boundaries onthis record. I hope it will spark a dialogueas to what jazz is or what it can be."

From the music's earliest history, jazzcomposers have been inspired by the popu-lar music of their era and Charles readilyacknowledges she's following in that tradi-tion. In addition to jazz studies, "Growingup in the '80s and '90s, Michael Jackson,Jill Scott, Stevie Wonder, Erykah Baduwere all on my radar. It would be hard forany musician my age to say they couldtotally lock that out."

Charles' Haitian heritage and musicshe heard while volunteering there alsosparked her creativity. She has traveled toHaiti three times in recent years, creatinga music education program with the chari-ty Rise2Shine. "I'm training teachers inbasic musical principles they can incorpo-rate into their curriculum," she explains."They work with very young students,four- and five-year-olds, and the capacityof some of those kids is enormous. I can'twait to see how this will impact them overtime."

In spite of the range of influences, shehas no doubts about what category the newalbum fits in. "There's way too much jazzin there for it not to be jazz," Charles says."It's a jazz record from jazz musicians—improvising musicians—tapping into otherworlds and melding genres." The singerhas kept her S.E. Charles Quartet togeth-er for five years, a rare feat in current jazzcircles. However, there are additionalmusicians who substitute regularly forcore quartet members when they have con-flicting commitments. "There are ninemembers of the quartet community whohave played the repertoire as often as theoriginal members. Everyone is so busy

In the meantime, a contract withConcord was part of his Monk award prize,so Hill has a recording session in Octoberon his schedule—perhaps an album of stan-dards. "The music I fell in love with whengrowing up with this music." Plus, thetrumpeter is gigging regularly in bothChicago and New York. Perhaps foremoston his list of projects is putting together a

Musician/Artistic Director's CornerThe upcoming Jazz in July at the 92nd

Street Y offers a tantalizing array of con-certs: a Duke Ellington tribute blendingthe talents of Ernie Andrews, HoustonPerson, Steve Nelson and more; a three-pianist exploration of piano greats rangingfrom Jelly Roll Morton through to OscarPeterson and beyond; a set of musical trib-utes to both Sondheim and to Sinatra; andan all-around remarkable array of estab-lished and rising talents in new and inter-esting line-ups. At the center of it all is theprogram's artistic director—pianist BillCharlap—who, since taking the reinsfrom his predecessor Dick Hyman in 2004,has continued to uphold exceptional pro-gramming standards while also placinghis own unique thumbprint on the pro-ceedings.

"I think that it's really about beinginclusive and about calling on what is, forme, an expanded musical family," heexplains. "The artists playing in Jazz inJuly are musicians who are a part of mymusical world and family as well as musi-cians I admire and have dreamed of play-ing with, and also newer artists who havebecome important to me." Indeed, forCharlap the programming opportunityprovides him with an intensive musicallaboratory and enables him to showcasethe range of his musical vision, to take pro-gramming challenges his touring schedulemight not allow and to stretch his ownimagination to new levels. To be sure, thisconstant creative stretch through genresand generations shows the influence ofmaster pianist Dick Hyman—a cousin ofCharlap as well as an early mentor—anddemonstrates the musical ties these tworemarkable artists have long shared.

Celebrating master vocalist MarkMurphy

Sheila Jordan, Judi Silvano, SteveRoss, Tessa Souter, Sean Smith,Marcelino Feliciano and DylanPramuk—as well as yet-to-be-announcedguests—will grace Café Noctambulo onJuly 25 in a tribute to the master vocalistMark Murphy. The evening will present amusical retrospective of Murphy’s career;find out more at http://www.cafenoctambulo.com/.Bill Charlap

The love and respect held for Hymanwill be particularly evident this year, asCharlap and Hyman share the headline onBill and Dick's All-Star Jazz Party, theJuly 21 concert that opens the series, inwhat promises to be a jaw-dropping tra-verse of the Great American Songbook.

While Charlap's background and visionhave left an indelible stamp on Jazz inJuly—it's all but impossible to think of thefestival as separate from Charlap—thebenefit has proven reciprocal as the seriesprovides Charlap with intensive musicaltraining each summer. "I'm like a kid in acandy store," he says, laughing. "I get toplay with the best musicians in the world,of all the generations and the styles. Everyyear I get to do this, and it's like a greatsummer thesis. I learn something neweach time; it's exciting and mind-expand-ing and I always come away havinglearned a great deal."

HOT FLASHES...continued from page 31

Last year, 14-year-old trumpeterGeoffrey Gallante was the subject ofnews piece on "Voice of America." Thebroadcast offered a portrait of the youngartist through montage—home videos ofearly lessons with awestruck teachers, footage of the youngster with a head ofcropped blond hair serenading the aisles ofa church, and tapes of orchestral and jazzperformances. His early childhood culmi-nated in an appearance on "The TonightShow" at age five. Barely out of kinder-garten, Gallante had the abbreviatedcareer of a veteran behind him.

The pressures of a precocious careerhave had little impact on his relaxed show-manship. Gallante dances onstage betweensolos. Sometimes his hair is slicked to theside, other times covered by a fedora. "Toentertain your audience is a must,"Gallante says. “You always want to createa level of comfort and relaxation; it can onlyimprove the audience's experience, which

directly improves yours.” Gallante looks forward to his July show

at Saint Peter's Church, his second at thevenue. "Beautiful sanctuary, great musi-cians, appreciative audience, and it's in theheart of NewYork City. Whatmore could youask for? Comeon out, wewould love toplay music foryou!"

JAZZ ANECDOTE BY BILL CROWBill Crow's books "Jazz Anecdotes" and "From Birdland to Broadway" can be

found at your favorite bookstore, and at www.billcrowbass.com along with many interesting photos and links.

Conversation heard in a record store in Toronto:Customer: "Hi, I'm looking for a gift for my dad. He likes jazz. What do you recommend?"Clerk: "Well, Louis Armstrong is pretty popular."Customer: "Isn't he the astronaut? Like, the first guy to walk on the moon?"Clerk: "That's Neil."Customer: "Fine, whatever… the first guy to kneel on the moon."

A tour manager told John Simon about a time that Neil Young did a concert of all newmaterial. After about a half hour of it, a frustrated fan yelled from the audience, "Play ussomething we've heard before!" So Young played the last number over again.

working and that's what we all need topush this music forward."

The S.E. Charles Quartet performing atthe Blue Note July 25 is likely to be a mixof regulars and regular subs, focusing ontunes from Inner Dialogue and possiblysome new compositions. For Charles, hear-ing what each musician brings to the musicis part of the fun and excitement. Shepoints out that the group has been playingthe Inner Dialogue material for more thana year. "Over time, it has taken on a differ-ent form. We're open to experimentation;we've pushed it, and new life has beenbreathed into the music. It's fun to re-explore, rediscover, notice some littlenuanced part and develop it."

Charles also plays the Jazz Gallery onJuly 24 with E.J. Strickland's TransientBeings; Ravi Coltrane is set to be a specialguest on the gig.

that. It's time for young people to take theball and go forward.' And after a lot of beg-ging and cajoling, I finally convinced her. That remains the highlight of my career:helping my mother get that record made."

The greatest lesson Alice Coltraneimparted to her son was for him to be him-self. "This music is about having thecourage to accept who you are, embracingyour strengths and being aware of yourweaknesses," he says. "I get the fact thatI'm the son of John and Alice Coltrane. Butat the same time, we all have our roles toplay. I can't be John Coltrane or AliceColtrane. I can only be Ravi Coltrane."

The Ravi Coltrane Guitar Quartetperforms at Birdland June 30-July 4.

NEW JERSEY JAZZGary Walker, “Morning Jazz Host”, WBGO, 88.3 FM/wbgo.org

Bartz photo by Visual Champagne, Faddis by John Abbott.

GARY BARTZNEWARK MUSEUM / JULY 2Alto saxophonist Gary Bartz describes himself as a warrior fighting in a peacefulmanner to create music that's worthy, a battle he initially engaged at 11 with hisfirst instrument. After studies at Juilliard, Bartz's nonstop style would be featuredin the bands of Art Blakey, Max Roach and Abbey Lincoln, Charles Mingus, JackieMcLean, Miles Davis, and a lengthy association with McCoy Tyner, appearing onthe Grammy winning Illuminations (Telarc) in 2004. Bartz's own groups haveshown a spirit in hard bop, African, funk and the avant garde. Most recently,Coltrane Rules: Tao of a Music Warrior (OYO) demonstrates both sensitive andaggressive approaches with an infinite display of ideas from this alto master.Bartz's quartet includes bassist James King and drummer Greg Bandy.

JON FADDISTWO RIVER THEATER / JULY 31-AUGUST 1 When trumpeter Jon Faddis plays, he gives the feeling to those watching and lis-tening that any one of us could do it. But don't be fooled! You are witnessing a musi-cian whose comfort comes from full mastery of his instrument. This comfort comesfrom first-hand knowledge gained from experience with Charles Mingus, the ThadJones/Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra and Dizzy Gillespie, his mentor starting as a teengrowing up in Oakland. Faddis' style can go from a whisper into the "Faddisphere,"displaying astonishing technique along the way. With his long working quartet thatincludes pianist David Hazeltine, bassist Kiyoshi Kitagawa and drummer DionParson, Faddis explores music from his recording Teranga (Koch Jazz) and a smallgroup version of Gillespiana, written by Lalo Schifrin for Dizzy.

CECIL BRIDGEWATERWILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY / JULY 20Trumpeter/flugelhornist Cecil Bridgewater realizes the lineage of the instrumentand its place in contemporary music. His formidable talents have been appreciatedby audiences around the globe. Along the way, he's played with Horace Silver, DizzyGillespie, Jimmy Heath, the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra and the Count Basieand Duke Ellington orchestras. His compositions and arrangements have been partof the works of Max Roach, Lena Horne, Dee Dee Bridgewater and more. His ownrecordings like Mean What You Say (Brownstone) display his comfort with stylesincluding straight ahead, samba, a Louisiana strut or a gorgeous ballad. As thenewest member of the WPU Faculty Workshop, Bridgewater joins trombonist TimNewman, pianist James Weidman, bassist Steve LaSpina and surprise guests.

STEVE NELSONENGLEWOOD PUBLIC LIBRARY / JULY 16His first rhythms were expressed on a set of drums but, soon after, Pittsburghnative Steve Nelson picked up four mallets and made the vibraphone his instrumentof choice. Hooked on jazz from the beginning, Nelson felt the mastery of MiltJackson, developed his own voice, received a Master's degree in Music, and vibedwith Kenny Barron, David Newman, Johnny Griffin, Mulgrew Miller, JackieMcLean and bassist Dave Holland in both big band and small group settings. OnNelson's recordings like New Beginnings (TCB), he combines a mature craftsman-ship with vigor, and a blurring attack with a sweet shimmer on standards fromJobim, Berlin and Carmichael or on his own inventive originals. Nelson's consider-able talents are featured in this performance led by bassist Calvin Hill.

COMPOSER/TRUMPETER WADADALeo Smith is one of the most boldlyoriginal figures in creative contemporarymusic and one of the great trumpet playersof our time. A 2013 Pulitzer finalist, Smithwas named One of the 80 Coolest Things inJazz Today by Downbeat. His landmark2012 civil rights opus Ten FreedomSummers is "a staggering achievementand merits comparison to Coltrane's ALove Supreme in sobriety and reach,"writes Francis Davis in the Rhapsody JazzCritics Poll. The Great Lakes Suitesearned high praise including second placein NPR Music's 2014 Jazz Critics Poll.

Q: Anything you'd rather be doing otherthan playing music?A: As long as I live it's Music.Q: Are there recordings of yours you'd

like to say a few words about?A: Ten Freedom Summers, Occupy the

World and The Great Lakes Suites were allconceived as projects with an intent to pulltogether my complete musical world view.I never try to change what's outside of myhorizontal field but, in the best way I can,to complete a creative vision of what's inmy heart and head.Q: What's the difference in your

approach to recording Ten FreedomSummers versus Golden Quartet?A: GQ, as an ensemble, is the biggest

dream of my musical life. So far, TFS is thelargest completed compositional projectand it contains my total music language. What I am working on now is larger anddeeper than TFS. It's the only dream I canhave after creating TFS, Occupy and TheGreat Lakes Suites.Q: Favorite place in the world to play,

public or private?A: In my bedroom...alone.Q: What sort of intelligence does play-

ing jazz require?A: None. Creative music requires being

creative not "intelligent."Q: What do you know today that you

didn't know ten years ago?A: Ten years of new awareness, new

dreams and knowing of myself. Q: Is jazz music a political statement? A: Any music or art can be anything the

"creator" says it is.Q: What's a word or two that jumps into
