    The Polysius scope of supplyalso includes the extension,modernisation and optimisationof existing hot metal desulphuri-sation plants, as well as fieldassembly, commissioning andsuch services as plant andprocess inspection.

    The production of high-gradesteel qualities is no longerconceivable without targeteddesulphurisation of the hotmetal in ladles outside the blastfurnace process.

    For hot metal desulphurisationoutside the blast furnace, thedip-lance method is the mostreliable and the most econom-ical metallurgical process.For this reason, most steelworks world-wide reduce thehot metal's sulphur content incharging and transfer ladles withthe dip-lance injection process.

    operating with the dip-lancemethod. Thanks to the

    advanced planttechnology

    and our companys compre-hensive process know-howgained from the installation ofover 50 hot metal desulphuri-sation plants all around theworld, Polysius is the marketleader on this sector.

    Process technology

    What makes the dip-lance pro-cess so effective for hot metaldesulphurisation is the pneu-matic injection of fine-graineddesulphurisation reagents intothe molten metal with highdosing precision via refractorylances. This causes an intimate

    mixing of the desulphuri-sation reagents withthe hot metal. Thedip-lance method canreliably reduce the

    sulphur content of the hotmetal to figures as low as

    0.001%.

    It allows the use ofseveral desulphurisa-tion reagents, such

    as lime, calcium car-bide and magnesium, whichremove the sulphur from thehot metal by chemical reactionand convert it to the slag.

    There are many ways of con-trolling the dip-lance process tominimise the operating costs.One is to vary the desulphu-risation reagent injection rate,which must take account of thefact that the effectiveness of

    hot metal desulphurisationis proportionally opposite tothe desulphurisation reagentinjection rate.

    Another way is to inject differ-ent desulphurisation reagentsduring one hot metal treat-ment session. The reagentscan be injected into the moltenmetal individually, simultane-ously or at injection intervalswith the Monoinjection, Co-injection or Multi-injection pro-cesses.

    Which of the above processescauses the lowest operatingcosts depends on the oper-ating and production conditions(such as the weight, tempera-ture and sulphur content ofthe hot metal, the requiredfinal sulphur content, the blastfurnace slag and the injectiontime), which can vary fromcharge to charge.

    For the selection of the optimuminjection process according tothe production conditions acomprehensive knowledge ofthe metallurgy of the hot metaldesulphurisation process isrequired.

    In todays computer-aided hotmetal desulphurisation plants,selection of the optimum pro-cess is performed by a metall-urgical process computer. Thequality of the process is thusdetermined by the quality of themetallurgical process computerand thus by the programmedprocess knowhow.

    Due to the large number ofplants already supplied, Poly-sius possesses comprehensivemetallurgical know-how. Thisis implemented in the metal-lurgical process computer which is an in-house develop-ment and thus benefits ournumerous customers all aroundthe world. The metallurgicalprogram contains all mathe-matical equations which reflectthe regularities of hot metaldesulphurisation, so that everyhot metal charge is individualdesulphurised with the optimumprocess.

    Plant technology

    To minimise the operating costs of the hot metaldesulphurisation process, Polysius offers a specialinjection technology under the proprietary nameMEPOL.

    The core item of the MEPOL technology is thepressure-vessel conveyor with five harmonisedmeasurement and control units for measuring,monitoring and controlling all operating param-eters that have an influence on the processand the dosing precision.

    Thus the Polysius MEPOL technology ensures ahigh dosing accuracy for each desulphurisationreagent during the whole injection process.

    Combined with the metallurgical processcomputer the MEPOL systems ensure thecost-optimised desulphurisation of eachhot metal charge.

    High operating reliability and plant availability incombination with favourable operating costs andhigh process flexibility are the most importantcriteria for the quality of the hot metal desulphu-risation plant:

    In plants designed by Polysius, such importantcomponents as the discharge control valveand the pressure controller are made of wear-resistant ceramic to ensure a high plant avail-ability. At wear-intensive locations (e.g. at pipebends) MEFLEX hoses are used.
