ABOUT US 2016 AUCTION CATALOG6

Preserving the sport of hunting through education, conservation and the protection of hunters’ rights.

Today, more than ever, the future of hunting is under threat. Houston Safari Club believes that Sport Hunting is Wildlife Conservation. Let’s do more than just talk and worry about it. Join Houston Safari Club today!

• Millions of dollars in grants to support conservation, anti-poaching, hunters’ rights, youth education, hunters’ safety and more.

• Over 350 student scholarships for Wildlife, Range Management and other conservation-related studies.

• Thousands of dollars funding over 200 kids annually in outdoor education programs and experiences.

• Partnerships with hundreds of conservation-focused individuals and organizations including Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation, National Rifle Association, American Wildlife Conservation Partners, Conservation Force, Texas Parks and Wildlife, Texas Wildlife Association and many more.

• To conserve and preserve the wild game species of the world, their habitat and the sport of hunting.

• To aid conservation by intiating projects, and by supporting worthwhile projects of other organizations that share common goals, beliefs, and purposes, in the U.S. and around the world

• To educate our members, our youth and the public on the role that hunting plays as a recognized scientific tool in conservation of the world’s wildlife resourches, and to support HSC’s scholarship program, American Conservation and Education Society (ACES).

• To preserve the rights of hunters to pursue the hunting sports and to promote a public understanding and acceptance of proper hunting as the ancient, honorable and valuable sport that we know it to be.

• To promote good fellowship among those who love the outdoors and the sports of hunting and fishing.

• To educate our youth in the safe and sportsmanlike use of firearms, hunting ethics and to interest them in the conservation of wildlife and its habitat, which is their natural heritage.

• To share our hunting skills and information with younger, serious but less experienced hunters and to encourage them to develop into responsible hunters and conservationists.

• To provide recognition for the individuals who have succeeded in this sport and those who have accomplished significant advances in any of our purposes.

Our Mission

The Future of Sport Hunting is in Your Hands

The numbers speak for themselves...

Cory Carlson vividly portrays nature’s timeless beauty and energy with his extraordinary wildlife paintings. His art reveals a unique ability to bring the intensity of life in the wild to canvas and reveal its hidden realms. In the eyes of his subjects he offers us a captivating and emotional insight into the soul of nature. This beautiful piece depicts an uneasy tension at dawn. While observing a pride of lions on a kill amongst the tall African brush, a group of hyenas began to cautiously approach. Being mortal enemies, all the lions became instantly alert.

There is something about cave art that captures the imagination even today, 10,000 or more years after ancient man created it. Long before the invention of the written language, humans were chiseling, painting, and carving in rock to tell their stories. Why did they feel compelled to do this? And what was their story? We can only ponder possible answers to these questions, but pondering is one of Laurel’s favorite things to do. Her Contemporary Cave Art pieces reflect the results of her thinking on this subject, as well as her recent bush experience and observations in Namibia, Africa. Viewing Laurel’s Cave Art is like traveling back in time-or on safari to Africa. These art works remind us of a time when wealth was measured in fresh water, a dry and spacious cave, a warm fire, and a landscape capable of providing a successful hunt.

This custom AR-10 was built by the wounded veterans participating in HSC’s Hunting with Heroes program. The 6.5mm Creedmoor is a centerfire rifle cartridge introduced by Hornady in 2007 as a modification of the .30 TC. It was designed specifically for rifle target shooting competition, although it is also achieving success in hunting. Bullet for bullet it achieves a slower muzzle velocity than longer cartridges such as the 6.5-284 Norma or magnums such as the 6.5mm Remington Magnum. However, due to its 2.825 inch overall length, the 6.5mm Creedmoor is capable of being chambered in short-action bolt rifles and AR-10 rifles.

Each sculpture begins with James visiting the verdite mine where he selects his own stone. Unlike marble, which can be cut to accommodate the subject of the sculpture, verdite comes from the mine in a variety of shapes which will invariably dictate what will be created. James refers to this process as “revealing the spirit which is within the stone.” After painstakingly removing layer upon layer of stone and carving each minute detail, the sculpture is wet-sanded and fired to a high temperature before applying stone wax. Each piece is then hand polished to a beautiful luster.

The Blaser R8 represents the most dynamic change to the bolt action rifle in the last 20 years. Unlike rotary bolts, the unique design of the straight pull action offers speed and versatility unmatched in conventional rifles. By locking the bolt directly to the barrel, which is cold hammer forged for unequaled accuracy, the overall length of the R8 is a full three inches shorter than traditional rifles. This shortened length gives the R8 its ideal balance and weight distribution.

This locking method also enables the interchangeable caliber system to work. By simply changing the barrel and locking head you can select between calibers ranging from 222 Remington to 500 Jeffery. The key between shooter and rifle is the trigger; with the first-of-its-kind removable fire control system, the R8 raises the bar yet again. This system combines a detachable box magazine and trigger assembly into a single unit which breaks like glass at 1300 grams. This unit can be locked in place for those who do not prefer a detachable magazine. Recoil control is paramount for the R8. The parallel comb stock offers just the right cast to make shooting the large calibers enjoyable while the Rigby style cheek piece provides ample surface for a proper cheek weld.

At the heart of this masterpiece is a color case hardened receiver engraved with President’s Rifle in gold with a gold trigger. Any purist will say color case hardening is half science and half voodoo. Great care was taken to gather the traditional elements of animal bone and hardwood charcoal to deliver this one-of-a-kind modern classic receiver. As for stock design, we selected elegant grade 7 Turkish walnut with Rigby style cheek piece and traditional Silvers recoil pad. A custom engraved pistol grip cap with the Houston Safari Club logo was the perfect accent to the stock.

Offered in 458 Lott with open express sights and classic ring mounted front sight, with silver bead, and sling mount, this exclusive model will not be duplicated. Now is your chance to own pioneering rifle technology with old world craftsmanship.

Kobus has proudly displayed his artwork at Houston Safari Club, as well as other notable venues, over the last 25 years. His philosophy regarding his talents is as follows: “As often as possible, I go on safari to immerse myself in the wilds. An artist’s objective for going on safari is unlike that of a hunter or tourist. As such, I have found that artists go about it differently from all others. I want to be on the other side of the animal where the light is better. I love being up close and personal. I need to see the texture of his nose or the thickness of the fur around his ears. I wait to see how he reacts to different situations, spending time with him and shooting as many photographs as possible. Frequently, I must concentrate very hard not to let adrenalin prevent me from being able to accurately assess my surroundings. Animals are wild and even a docile looking elephant can suddenly change into an enraged animal if you get too close and are not alert.” The piece measures 12"x8". Custom framed by Kobus, the finished measurements are 26"x23"
