HOW DID YOU USE MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES IN THE CONSTRUCTION AND RESEARCH,

PLANNING AND EVALUATION STAGES?Evaluation question 1

RESEARCH AND PLANNINGDuring research and planning I worked with my partner to recreate the music video of Wuthering Heights by Kate Bush. We did this as we felt it would give us an inside knowledge of filming a music video and educate us on some of the problems we may encounter while producing our final product. It also allowed us to develop our filming skills as we had not filmed since before the summer holiday and wanted a recap. Recreation wise this video was also very challenging as we had to make the choreography as similar as possible while lip-synching Kate Bush.

I then used Sony Vegas in post production to edit the video, I used filters to make the video look as similar as possible to those used in the video (e.g the fade in of the singer in the video or adding contrast). One challenge I found while editing was the lip syncing, making the video fit to the music exactly was extremely difficult, this influenced our decision when picking a song to use as we didn’t want to have a performance video.

CONSTRUCTIONWhile filming the main product for our project, we used a variety of equipment and technologies to help make our video have a range of shots and camera movements. The two cameras we used were the Cannon 1200D and the Cannon 1300D, the use of two cameras allowed us to film the same scene from different angles. The lenses had a big impact on our filming, we used a Canon 18-55mm lens for some of the wide shots but mainly used a Canon 24-70mm 1:2.4 as this focal length suited many of the medium shots I used. When it came to the extreme close-ups I used a Canon 75-300mm 1:4-5.6 with a 50mm macro extension tube, using these new lenses allowed me and my partner to gain knowledge on these technologies.

POST-PRODUCTION

During the post production section of producing my final product I used Sony Vegas to edit in a way that fitted the music and portrayed the message of the song. When the pace and rhythm of the song picked up I made the shots shorter and more frequent which had a profound effect on the relationship between visuals and the song, which wasn’t there before I made this change. I did the same for when the music got slower but instead timed it to play with the slower scenes which had longer shots, this was more subtle than with the quick shots. At the end of the video I faded out the song intime with the visuals which was a nice ending. I struggled putting something together for the end verse where the song becomes more upbeat, and so I filmed some more shots that looked similar to the ones at the start of the video, but this time I smiled and looked happy. Throughout this project I have been uploading my work to my blog in different formats such as videos, PowerPoint’s, PDF's, voice recordings and word documents.

OVERALL

Overall I used different media technologies at different parts of this project and tried to be proactive at using them appropriately, like using different lenses tocapture a range of different shots. I believe that I was consistent with these choices throughout the construction, research and post production stages.
